a 13-year old that loves to drink?

Not to be a square mid-twenties geek or anything, but isn't that a bit dysfunctional? I mean, sure, I got a bit wasted when my sister got married(I was 14), but I didn't drink again until close to the end of highschool, and after that, not again till college.

Okay, so now I'm pretty much Hemingway, but even he didn't start that early.

Check that ****, hawklore.

american attitude to alcohol is funny.

when i was young we always used to bug my dad for a sip of his beer, have a little of the froth at the top.  He used to let us just have a sip, whats the prob there?

he used to let me have a bottle of beer or two with him when i was 15/16, its good to let kids get the idea of it before they get to the legal age and go crazy on it.  By the time i was 18 and legal to drink alcohol was no big deal, kids without the idea of alcohol (were very few of them) get plastered and end up in hospital or a gutter puking somewhere.

Think you are over-reacting to his loves to drink comment.  Im sure he doesnt go out and buy a 6 pack every night to down.

21 as legal age limit to drink? yet 16 to drive?  how old u have to be to buy an AK47 or M16?

Furball, as much as I love the country I live in, the English attitude to alcohol is even more crazy or worse than that, downright dangerous.

People on the continent love a drink, but you don't see drunken thugs wandering down the streets.

To my mind, part of it is licensing laws, and part of it is this whole 'underage drinking' stigma (read forbidden fruit) we have here.

Central London on a Saturday night is just horrific because of this.

I have to agree with furball,  we let our kids taste alcoholic beverages from a very young age.  we usually have wine with our noon and evening meals and we never excluded them from that.  by the time they were off to college they were very ok with libations and we have never had an incident with them that negatively involved alcohol.  when my eldest ( a daughter) was around five years of age she was helping me in the garden.  it was a warm summer day and I was steadily depleting my supply of cold ones.  it seem that I opened 1 took a swig and put it down when I came back it was drained.  after the second one I found my daughter Maureen quite tipsy. giggling her head off.  the subsequent headache cured her of alcohol abuse for ever.

Tough issue in many respects.

The first full day I spent farming with my dad he offered me a beer.  Cuts the dust you ate all day harvesting. I know I ate more supper & slept better afterwords.
I was probably 15 at the time.

In some respects its better to let em try it at home under controled enviorment than waiting till they are 18 & go out & get all messed up.

Moderation is the key.

That's our policy here in my house, so far so good, they have no interest in drinking since recovering from a daquiri hangover.
