Now that the P38 is available in AH II could one of you talented skinners put this skin together ?
I read that "Thunder" knows some tricks as to making skins for the P38 ... what do think Thunder ? Is it doable ?
I think that this skin would qualify as an "Historical" skin, beside the fact that it makes the P38 look like the monster it is.
-
the one problem currently with making flat paint skins is that the material defined for the p38 is shiny.
once AHII is up and running, they will revisit certain AC for this reason.
you cold go ahead and make the skin, but it will just be shiny for now.

Really need the P38......think it's the J the olive drab one.......way cool plane in FB

Isn't that Lockheed P-38F of 347th Fighter Group in Feb 1943 over Guadalcanal?
-
It is a PTO P-38, "Japanese Sandman II" flown by Richard "Snuffy" Smith 39th Fighter Squadron - 7 victory Ace.
Model: P-38H-5-LO
Serial #: 42-66905
History:
Delivered to USAAF as 42-66905, 19??.
- Forced landing in swamp near Dobodura, PNG, Dec. 4, 1943.
- Abandoned in place.
- Flew as Japanese Sandman II/26.
"The Japanese Sandman II"
The plane was assigned to the 35th FG's 39th FS and was Serial Number 42-66905. Orginally piloted by Lt. Richard E. Smith, and the nose still carries his name and seven "kill" markings.
This Lightning force landed after a due to mechanical difficulties during a training exercise from Embi while being flown by another pilot, Lt. Dawson after the plane was transfered to the 431st FS, 475th Fighter Group.

You guys must be empathical or something.
I've decided my next project to work on P-38L and its templates - tho it's taking more time than I expected to finish and refine the current project of Hartmann's G-6.
Personally, I could use some help in which olive-drab P-38 to depict - IIRC there weren't any olive-drab P-38Ls around.
So if any of you guys have pics or profile drawings of olive-drab P-38Ls, then please notify me of this through this thread. If there weren't any olive-drab P-38Ls, a P-38J would be a good alternative.. so, if any of you got pics of olive-drab P-38Js of the latest assembly block which would be almost identical to the P-38Ls.. please shoot!

The only consistantly OD and Gray P38Ls were those of the 459th FS, 80th FG "Green Dragons" flying in the China Burma India Theater of Operations.
They were painted in the theater as they would have been not been painted at the factory. The Green Dragon's paint scheme is fairly well known and can be found on model kits etc.
This is a J, but their Ls looked the same.

NICE technic !!! Keep at it !!!

Here are couple of great candidates for skins. It is actually the same plane, the P-38 from Duxford that was destroyed 8 years ago. Both paint jobs are historically significant. If I get some free time, I'll try to do them myself, along with Larry Blumer's "Scrap Iron IV" and Robin Olds' "Scat"

That is Larry Blumer's plane. I did have a picture of the plane with Larry Blumer standing in front of it, taken in late 1944.
I'm not sure if that (the plane in the picture above) is the plane he actually flew in combat or the one he owned after the war. It appears to be the post war plane as it was seen at Blumer Air Maintenance, in or around Oregon.
It is believed that Blumer's victims that day included Luftwaffe ace Rudi Dassow. This has never been confirmed.
I know at one time the plane he owned after the war had a yellow nose, yellow spinners, and yellow cowls. I did have a picture of it taken from another plane in mid air, with both engines off, and both props feathered. It was signed "Hey Jack, remember when 'Scrap' ". The plane was destroyed in a fatal crash after Blumer sold it, the wreckage is at Kermit Weeks' place.
(J and L model P-38's were sold after the war for $1250, a few earlier models sold for less than $1000)

Ya caught me inbetween edits :)
and your correct about it not being the actual plane
link to that photo ya speak of above

Notice the post war plane has one more score marker on it for a total of 7.
I exchange emails with a friend of Blumer's, Stan Richardson Jr. Stan said despite the fact that he had more hours in a P-38 than Larry (Stan was not only a combat pilot, but also an advanced instructor in the P-38) he never could get Larry to let him take the P-38 up.
Another good skin would be the P-38 Jack Ilfrey flew before "Happy Jack's Go Buggy", it was called "Texas Terror".
"California Cutie" was flown by Richard Loehnert, and held the theatre record for most missions and most hours flown on the original or any other set of engines. He also shot down two 109s in one day in July 1944. Pics of the pilot and original plane are here:

I'm looking for a picture or pictures of John Lowell's plane. That's one I have not been able to find.
Art Heiden's "Lucky Lady" is featured on a postage stamp.
Another ace in a day in a P-38 was Herb "Stub" Hatch, who shot down six in one day in a raid on Ploesti.
