Title: Duck Season Approaching
Post by: Gixer on April 09, 2004, 01:02:11 PM
Duck season is approaching here in New Zealand and looking at (after a 10 year break) at buying a new shotgun. Appreciate any advice on a good auto or pump that dosn't cost the earth and here legally for the duck season the magazine has to be able to be plugged to hold a max of 2 rounds. Though I guess any shotgun tube can be plugged to what ever you require.

Would look at an under and over but this shotgun will also be used alot for other things where you need to be able to hold as many rounds as possibe and an auto or pump is better suited..

My personal fav is the mossberg model 835 shooting 3-1/2" shells has a lot of felt recoil though.  you really must lean into it.  but i killed a nice 20lb turkey at 90- 100 yds.  really powerful round.  hope that helps.

There are tons of good semi-auto's out there.  Browning, Barretta, Franchi (my dad has one of these and loves it), Remington and even Winchester.  Each has its own fans, but you really can't go wrong with any of them.  For a pump, I would suggest the Remington 870.  They have been around forever and are hard to beat.

I hunt upland game so I don't own a duck gun (I have Belgein Browning Superposed in 20ga), but if I was going to buy one to carry around in a boat or in a blind in crappy conditions, I would probably by a 3 inch Magnum 870.

Here you can buy a plain one at Wal-Mart for under $300.00.

My Upland/Wetland/Deer/Sporting Clay gun is a Remington 11-87.  No complaints whatsoever.

Remington 870 tough to beat IMO.

Easy to get diff barrels for it.
Easy to plug.

Only 2 shots allowed? That bites.
Might have to buy a dowel & make a custom plug. But thats really not that hard.

remington 870 magnum 3 inch. if you get the magnum receiver you still can shoot 2 3/4 shells. a good thing to do is take the barrel to a gunsmith and get him to cut a forcing cone in it. what that does is, cuts the step out in the chamber. that step dents the pellets and with a forcing cone you will have improved shot patterns.

You can't go wrong with a Mossberg 500.

Plus when the government isn't looking, you can attach the laser sight, pistol grip, folding stock, extended tube, 4 inch barrel, duck bill muzzle, fully auto sears...........

ummmm.... All that is very nice... But a Mossberg 500 is a pump gun... It cant be "full auto" in any sence.

UNLESS you mean it can be made to function like the old Winchester Model 12's and Ithica Mod 37s and a few others where everytime you pumped another shell into the chamber and held the triger down it would keep firing...

You really need a lazer for a shotgun?

Hell with a 4 inch barrel you should expect to hit everyone in the room when you fire that... What would a lazer gain you?
