Well it's Friday, good by OZ.
After it's first week what did everyone observe, not think, but actually see happen this week.
I saw that the majority of the people given a place to furball, did just that. Now I agree since it is so new and since there are few maps that allow this to happen that people just over did it. But I was glad to see this happen.
I saw morons like Bruser2 drive carriers strait into nme PT spawns not caring that he was sending it to it's instant inevitable death, even after multiple people told him so.
I saw the PT spawns actually seem useful in protecting bases. If you have a carrier off shore you have to keep VH down or kiss the carrier good by. This makes the carrier more of an off shore asset only to be brought in when the base is ready. Definitely makes strat better.
I saw alot of cool GV action on Kaos island.
-
I saw a lot of warpiness. Don't know if it was due to the map or wacky internet issues, but I wasn't the only one who noticed.
The map itself was fun for me (aside from the warps).
Glove
-
Yeah , same here, but it only seemed a little more than the normal warps I see every now and again.
I think fester is working on this as well. He mentioned taking out 6 carriers, which sucks cause having all those carriers made it seem like there was always one off of someones coast. I hope the removal does not ruine that.
-
I had a blast on this map.
Yes the warps were more that usual, but as noted, Fester said that he was going to remove 6 CV fleets (consolation - I hope - 6 airfields to replace them).
Flying over furball island, I have to say that the GV enthusiasts seemed to be in nirvana. The talk and combat chatter was non-stop by these guys ... like I have never seen before. At times, I had to fly away from range to get a break ... hehe.
There was furballin ... gang-bangin' ... dogfights ... Strateegery ... GV battles ... all types of action. What else more could anyone want in a map. This map is a piece of art ... by far the finest map in the HTC vault ... and most of all ... a tribute to a fine gentleman and a fine virtual pilot.

I agree with Mars. Especially in light of what's taken its place. Another AH holiday for me...

the 6 carriers im taking out are the ones furthest form the fight and from the fornt. they spend most of the time traveling to the action and little time in the action so removing these will be the ones least missed.
remember its only 2 less cvs per country so the effect will not be that bad.
smooth gameplay is primary above all neat features and stuff thats cool but not vital to a good arena fight. if somthing in the arena is causing the warps i will find it and destroy it :D
-
personally i love the furball/gv battle in the center and was quite pleased that any of the three sides could be knocked off that island and then later recapture the base on their side and the combined ground/air war there would continue. the gv guys love seeing the furballers above them because it means any bombers or jabos that come in get ripped to shreds by bloodthirsty furballers while the gv gang can engage ground targets while having air cover and when that aircover is destroyed or lost its a rough time! lots of flaks! i honestly was surprised by how well that island worked out for those interested in that type of fight.
-
I enjoyed it. The center was a good spot to get into the action quickly. I, for the first time, have been getting spontaneous computer reboots while flying on this map, but I don't think it can blame it on the map. The first night I flew on it for about 3 hrs with no problems. Every time since that, I had the reboot twice while flying. Since it didn't happen the first night it may not be the map...I'll see what happens with this week's map. Either way though, I'm sure it's my system, as I don't know what a map could do to reset my system other than bring out a problem that was already there.

I liked it at first, but by weeks end,it was way to condusive to the HORDE.
(sung to the tune of "another one bites the dust" by queen)
And another one gone- And another one gone- Another horde takes a base-
Hey we're gonna keep hording till... the whole game is DISGRACED! (pearnnn-dearnt-dearnt-dearnt) Another horde takes a base-

i really like this map except for one feature...furball centre island...my experience this week showed me about 90% of players were on these couple of sectors... rest of map just about empty..
maybe remove the airfields from this island..
but excellent map none the less

Your percentage can be nothing but wrong. Even so, I find it funny that you wish to remove something that a good deal of folks were enjoying.
-
I have played more AH this last week than in any given month in the last 2 years.
Kinda speaks for itself doesn't it.
Ty Fester
Selecter, Funny thats the one place I never went.
Was always too busy doing CV ops, trying to keep from getting squished into the center from the flanks.
-
a clown... yes it was to condusive...
NEVER allow people to have fun or.... they will. It is proven time after time... maps can be made that make it allmost impossible for most to have fun or... very little fun.. fester could take the example of pizza and design maps that assure that people won't be able to go around having fun.

Oh my goodness, people really liked to furball while playing a really good online WWII flightsim? The horror. Better force them to play differently next time because they don't know what's good for them. Sure can't trust people to know what they like, that's for sure. Darn furballers, shame on them for enjoying dogfighting. It's a sickness that must be stamped out for their own good.
:D
-
Great map. Replace Pizza with it as soon as possible please.:aok
-
Must admit - the only time I didn't fly at the furball island was
when us nits were pushed far off of it. I like the air/ground war
there, and the fact that you have to pay attention to the ground
ack - you couldn't just fly around low and slow.
-
I enjoyed it alot ...
As for warping that wasnt a problem for me (but i tend to stay out of the BIG horde ) and fly/play in the smaller cv/ dogfights out near the edges

I dont know about your %'s but there were a lot of folks at Furball Island which should be a good thing for everyone. Doesnt that say something that the Strat-tards (I'm not saying you are a Strat-tard Selector, I dont know you) never realise how many folks just want to use ACM to fight other aircraft and not kill defenceless toolsheds and gascans or be hostile realestate agents?
It seems to me the Strat-tards should be GLAD that the furballers are all bunched up together in the middle instead of spread out looking for someone to kill, less chance for them run into one and find someone with some planehandling skills while on the way to kill a toolshed.
PS: Fester, the map is awsome.
-
did anyone notice a reduction in fuel being porked at fields? ;)
-
well since ya made em the same size as Ack I'd imagine so...;)
If im porkin,,,I usually hit troops not fuel anyway
New method of dweebery involving your multiple VH's has shown up,
as soon as a Tiger or Panzie hear a bomb whistle, they exit..
and quickly reapear, knowing that one AC wont render the base disabled
My .02 is bettin your not a big fan of Jabo Op's are ya fester?
Love the map, but undecided on my opinion of your "tweaking"
-
Well, being a new face in the game I'm not sure if my opinion counts for much but I'll put it out there anyway...
I noticed some of the warping mentioned in previous posts...particularly around furball island... u know its bad when a Panzer is bouncing like something from a rap video...lol
I also noticed that large sections of the map went unused...probly because it was so new and people are getting the lay of the land.
I also noticed that it was one of the best looking terrains i've seen so far! Simply beautiful.
:aok
But man... what a pain in the but to get a re-set! :D
See ya up there-

P.S. I want to take a moment to thank the guys in the 367th and JG3 for helping the WoD feel welcome in our new home!
You've been great guys! Thank you.

i love jaboing
but i love tanking too
if the fun for the jabo is based on ruining and ending the fight for the tankers i feel that one dweeb shoulndt have the power to do this.
two dweebs maybe
with multiple vhs (ive found 3 is plenty and will be the max number in next version at large vbases) the fight goes onbetween the ground players and although it is hampered by enemy aircraft and helped by friendly aircraft it is not ended.
its my opinion as a tank dweeb and a jabo dweeb that it is more fun for both sides if no one person can unbalance and end the fight completely.
-
Good point
One thing Gnubee mentioned about re-set... and welcome to the BB's
I love the fact that there isnt a "Race for the Reset" like we have on so many other maps

The warping happens in the very heavy furball grids of the map during primetime .. Its a latency thing, But its not to bad for 200+ players in just a few sectors .
the large unused sectors is for more balanced gameplay ...
when we went to the 512x512 terrains (AKDesert ,alias Pizza ) we found that its to big for the amount of players . we needed maps bigger then 256x256 but not quite as large as 512

you know what realy bothers me still is seeing lancasters and b17's flying at 500 feet carpeting vhs and tanks its realy geting out of hand
tho they do make fun targets when flying mossie or 110

Remove a feature because it interfers with your type of play?
If %90 of the players are enjoying a center island furball than why remove what is desired?
Sounds a little selfish doesn't it?!

I love em, and with the multiple VH hangers it lessens thier impact and forces the need for more of em. I almost choked on my own drool when I saw 3 boxes of 5 to 7 k bombers. :D
I get the blast of killing bombers without the 20 min climb. lol
-
anything that increases the chances that dweebs will fly bombers is a good thing :)
give them targets they enjoy bombing and they will bomb and be killed bombing hehe

yep not once did I see fuel at any of the fields I was using dip under 75%

Removing CV's Fester? Can you relocate them?:D
I really enjoy the CV's, it makes it easier to get to a battle quicker. And with all the kamikazi's, they get sunk quick, it kinda bums me out, even though I am am fodder for the 109's and La-7's that circle like buzzards whenever a CV gets close.
-
Yep, reducing visibility of feul sure took away the mode of play for quite a few, but we're not selfish, screw em.
-

It did not take away a mode of play, it helped balance out the pork vs resupply problem. You can still pork fuel, it just made it a little bit harder to do.
-
"anything that increases the chances that dweeb will fly bombers is a good thing " WOuldnt be to quick with that one lol. In my quest to have fun (getting bored with ah) I figured a dweeb with an average shot from gun position (me) can kill at least 4 or 5 cons per sortie while ackstarring :)

And this is why you are the "King" of map makers. Your indepth knowledge of all the game aspects shows in your maps and the continued tweaking of your maps.
A <> again for all your work to make this a better place for all of us and a <> for HTC for letting you try new and different things on these maps.

Lazs,
Furballs are fun when they arent so big that the numbers cause lags & warps (IMO).
Hording bases with mass numbered steamrolls IS & will always be.. BORING. Just as much fun as watching ice melt or paint dry.
Hording has become the staple of the meek MA pilot, & the main reason I often contemplate leaving the game. Its a good thing I was made CO of my squad or I'd have quit several months ago, When the CO quits, it hits the whole squad.
Now back to the thread-
I like the map when people fly it with the intent of playing the game. Every map sucks when people are GAMING the game. Horde rhymes with Bored- Nuff said.

Hey Fes.....well done and thanks alot
-
great map, great furballing, great strat, lots of fun for GV's and most importantly very thoughtfully laid out. Thanks fester.
-
aclown.. a furball is not a "horde".. it is at least 2 fairly equal hordes fighting each other..
the "horde" is the people you admire. those playing the game "as it should be played"... one huge horde gangbanging a base(s) to "win" realestate and kill defensless ai.
The center isle was like putting bases closer together even tho they were GV bases.. this has been tried before but with little imagination.. fester thought it out and changed the types of bases/towns... in effect.. he made it so that the fights took place somewhere between aircraft bases. planes could fight or exit the fight even if they didn't happen to be girly grey or peee 51's. The late war "game the gamers" had to face mobil ack if they wanted to get at the low planes.

This was a great map. What made it great was furball island.
I probably suffer from ADD, but I hate the maps where I have to fly a long way to a sector where the darbar looks good, only to have the red line fade away as I arrive.
Thirty minutes later I have taken a nice round trip flight without engaging anything.
-
sickbird... you are exactly right and that is why, if given the oportunity, "90%" of the players will go where there is a a good fight.
The enemies of fun and sky accountants know this so lobby for fields to be far apart and late war planes and gangbanging the only option. They want to catch you while you are nodding off.

The map seems to be the perfect MA map. It has a huge furball in the center w/ GVs & AC, which provides quick access to action for both. And on the outside of the map you have the perfect area for the hordes to play "trading bases". Now if we could just get rid of those ever previlent warps & lags in the huge furball, we may have the recipe for a succesful AH arena. --- Can only mean AH2 is right around the corner. My prediction--- 2weeks:rofl
Laz, the horde may be who YOU look up to as for how the game should be played, but I assure you- Many people play this game looking for actual combat. Not just dropping bombs/troops on undefended bases, or having 15 fighters chase 1 con. I am sure some players seek to actually improve their ACM by fighting against others in relatively even numbered fights. I should know, I'm one of them.
Anton:D
-
Laz, thnx for the definition of "furball". After having played only 4 years, I had no actual idea what I was refering too(rolls eyes).
Now would you be so kind as to define "redundant".
As for "admiring" the horde- Nothing admirable to me about taking undefended bases, except maybe in a small NOE raid or somthing of similar challenge. But for 20-50 guys to just string from undefended-base to undefended-base, coming in at high alts in mostly spits & la7s(excellent fighters after dropping ord) escorting gunned formations.yatta yatta blah blah, its boring to type, let alone do------
I guess I miss the days when people werent so afraid to have their pixels shredded. Anton is right, its the perfect MA map, a giant furball surrounded by hordes.
A_Clown
-
aclown.. redundant means ...
"re•dun•dant (ri dun‚dƒnt) adj.1. characterized by verbosity or unnecessary repetition in expressing ideas. 2. exceeding what is usual or necessary: a redundant part. 3. superabundant or superfluous: lush, redundant vegetation. 4. (of a system, equipment, etc.) supplied as a backup, as in a spacecraft. 5. (of language or a linguistic feature) characterized by redundancy; predictable. "
I don't know why yoiu wanted it but there it is. No one likes hordes except the people in em which seem to be quite a few. It could be argued that "playing the game the way it is meant to be" would be just that... Hordes... Missunz doodz all hitting undefended bases and porking fuel and killing toolsheds... Is not this behavior rewarded with points and perks? If the object is to win then timid behavior is "playing the game the way it was intended" or ... is now intended.
The other maps with their ultra vulnerable fuel and CV's are much worse... last night it seemed that about 3/4 of the rooks would swarm one base after another and if a CV got close they would kill it. All fast planes and all come in at alt and run away if anything resembling a fair fight looked like it might develop..
This is the new strat. At least with festers map some of the worst strat features are partialy nulified.
lazs
-
Hear, Hear Lazs. Last night was a great example of Rookiness in the extreme. The Hordes overrunning the map with sheer numbers. Where's the fun in that. It can't be very challenging.
-
I believe that is the beauty of festers maps... he circumvents the strat that is gamey and silly like the fuel thing...
Think about it... the ease of which fuel is porked to 25% and no lower, is simply an incentive to fly peeee 51's and go..... pork fuel. you can't dogfite in a peee 51 and you can't catch a peee 51 in anything that isn't late war fast... the strat is designed to ruin gameplay. for a large number of players...
fester figured out a way to get around it and allow more people to participate.
fester proved what I have been saying all along.... that, given a choice... people will have fun. The enemies of fun and sky accountants are ever vigilant tho.
lazs

Great map. My only complaint... I didn't get to fly on it that often. Thanks Fester!
Yeah, the AA at the center island sure jumped up and bit me. Has a pretty good hit on the old SA. Twist and turn a few times then BLAMO, "what the hell was that. Crap, the ground is shooting at me".
I liked it :aok.
-
...I don't go in for the furball because my SA is bad enough but the multible layers to the fighting at furball island had the feeling of a real battlefield danger in the air but get too low, and you'll eat AAA. Watch out in a GV or death might strike from above, but those enemy aircraft do not have free reign.
All in All Fester the map is fantastic. Effort well appreciated.
:aok
-
Map made the most fun I have had in AH! It gives the everyone a chance to play the game the way they want to play it.
So why is it that when someone playes in a way that another person doesnt like...ie. Low Bombers, Ack, Furball, Strat... they are called a Dweeb....seems to me we are all dweebs...
