Is anyone going to the 60th Anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy?
I think it would be a very moving and sombre day but one to pay our respects. It's bound to be extremely busy around the beaches and no doubt all B&Bs are already booked but a day out could be made of it if it's like that.
Anyone already going?

I do not understand how anyone could pay any respect to an event that accured 60 years ago?
What is commited today by the goverments of theese countries is more important and it brings shame to the whole event. AKA:"Fight for Freedome" by killing civilians in an unlawful war and multiple actions of warcrimes.
I Pi$$ on this

I guess Sweden was neutral and don't have any dead to remember? You don't have any form of memorials, at all?

No, the 6 th Of june just happend to be our National day.
And we do not have any troops in Iraq either, involved in the occupation.
I honour the men who spilled their blood and sacrificed their lifes on the beaches of Normandy.
But I do think the events in Iraq and the deeds there greatly overshadows it. Many men have turned in their graves during the last year.
:(

Yes I am familiar with what's going on in Iraq, many of my work friends have been in Iraq over the past year.
The difference is the ability to still show your respects in good times and bad, and I think that this is something that seperates ourselves from other forms of evil. The thought of being remembered well into the future is encouraging rather than detrimental, and by remembering those that fell, those that still carry wounds and us, the benefactors are simply wishing to pay their respects. You have to remember some of us are young and may have never had the opportunity to go to these memorials. Veterans are particularly warmed to know that people today haven't forgot their efforts and they welcome new people to join them in remembering all that fell.

sure, and I'll change mine to a world-wide famous Swedish actor or singer when you can point one out for me.

Johnny Cash would be much better, crabofix, as he was "the man in black" to bring attention to all the poor and downtrodden.
May I recommend Ann-Margret as the Swedish actor, singer, and dancer?

John Wayne, a great actor.
Johnny Cash a great singer/songwriter, whom I actully had the pleasure to spend a couple of days with. A very kind man.
I would not be offended if anyone used a Swedish actor, singer or dancer as their avatar, I just have a hard time finding anyone that would suite the apperance of NUKE, Dolph Lundgren would do, he seams to have the same level of IQ.

No argument here; I would just like to see some pics of Ann-Margret on this board.
You are lucky to have spent time with Johnny Cash. He was a great man as well.

For a lot of us we can just ask our parents or grandparents how they feel about their descendents celebrating their achievements.
They don't need some bitter euro-trash leftist Swede to speak for them.

I see a lot of that "slober"euro-trash"slober"?, in the posts. Name-calling, how mature. Call me leftist, rightist, nazi, commie, I do not mind, but can´t you come up with anything better then "slober"euro-trash"slober"?

I call it like I see it. It wasn't "name calling" I was portraying you in the correct light with the words that fit you best.
I mean when you call a pig “a pig” does he get mad? Of course not he’s a pig.

I Guess freeing a people from the most brutal regime since Stalin was a terrible thing to do reguardless of the reasons given for it
Funny while most of the Iraqi people may not want us there anymore which is entirely understandable. There arent a whole lot of them complaining that we got rid of Saddam and his thugs.
To hear you tell it it sounds like we are just intentionally going about killing civilians willy nilly. Its war, and in war people die soldier. and civilian alike Bullets dont discriminate.
this country (USA) goes way way out of its way to try to avoid cililian deaths often at the cost of the lives of our own servicemen.
which is certainly far more out of the way then we should.
Odd that if we are committing such warcrimes that the only ones being brought up on ar crimes charges happen to be iraqi.
heh, you must be watching too much of the "Clearly Not News" channel (CNN)

Finally on topic! :)
I have a couple of friends going over to Normandy, one of them is an ex-Army Warrant Officer 1. They help the British Legion which is specifically there to help all ex-servicemen. I know that many veterans take great pride in us 'youngsters' taking interest and paying their respects for what they fought for.
Unfortunately I think I've left the Normandy trip too late, but the area I live in is littered with loads of ex-RAF/USAAF bases that were used for the D-Day landings, including the one I work at. I know there's a disused one not too far away that they're trying to get a memorial for the 9th AF and 82nd/101st Airbourne and hopefully I can make that one. The BBMF should be doing a C47 flypast over most old 9th AF bases in the area.

We were going, were also taking some aircraft and a few vehicles that had actually participated in the invasion 60 years ago, but our ride (US Navy) backed out due to commitments overseas. It is a bit sad, but nonetheless, VE day is next year, so we will start planning for that instead. Hope all that make it can cast a somber
from me. Safe journeys.

Hence the reason most of the bull***** that is going on in this world today. No one remembers history, nor is willing to learn lessons from it. I think everyone should remember the sacrifices made by that generation, as it was they that had helped to ensure a free Europe and Asia.
Personally I think you are a disturbed person crabofix, but you are entitled to your opinion. Just as I am entitled to the opinion that I hope a safe falls on your head. :D
