I am wondering how much of it wil be "edited" for television.  Seen the DVD series and was completely blown away.  Best mini series of all time.

Just go out and buy it. your gonna like it.
While your at it. buy and read the book also.

Only movie I ever saw where the was almost as good as the book.
but then again. only movie I ever saw that did it by the book.
Some minor things are understandably compressed and left out because of time constraints but all in all it follows the book almost exact.
But it helped that they used the actual guys from Easy Co. as technical advisors making sure they got every detail just right.
some things that unless you were there in WWII you wouldnt even notice
I remember reading an article where they changed the location of where one guy carried his first aid kit on one guy cause it wasnt where "he" carried his.

commercial free? anyone know

Post by: DiabloTX on April 11, 2004, 01:43:00 PM
I doubt it wil be comm. free.  If it were there would be a huge advertising push "brought to you commercial free by XXXXX Corp.".  One can only hope though...

It will be really lame if it is not commercial free. It is so long and it seem's you would get pulled right in.  Commercials will ruin it for the viewers.

A 'special' episode of Mail Call is due to air immediately afterwards with a focus on "Easy Company."  I imagine weapons, tactics, etc.

Should be worth watching.

I think it is the best war movie/miniseries ever because there is no love story.  Men shooting each other counts as love for me ;)

The History Channel is hacking it to pieces. Looks like they are showing about 20% of it and the rest is on their cutting room floor. Shame.

Seems to be all there to me.  But, I have only seen the complete DVD series once.

If I remember it correctly, the first complete episode (was actually two in one) ran almost three hours or close to it, with no commercials. On the History Channel it ran one and one half hours with commercials.

Indeed. Saw that first episode tonight and loved what I'm seeing. But it does seem like their are parts being hacked out from what I hear. Will continue to watch the hist chan version. Got the boxed set as an easter gift from relatives today:D. What luck hehe.

Yah Gixer seems like a very worth peice to any DVD collection.

BGB I feel that bud! Im 100% with you on what you said, that deserves a fine !
Title: Band Of Brothers
Post by: DiabloTX on April 12, 2004, 05:57:09 AM
Ok, from what I remember each epi was ~55 mins long.  The first epi "Curahee" was shown tonight.  Even with 3 commercial breaks (short ones at that) the show ran and hour and a half.  It ended right before the jump into Carentan (which leads into "Day of Days").  So, what was it that they edited out so much of?

Regardless, an 'edited' version of BoB is still better than 90% of the WWII films ever made.  What a story.  What a time.  What a band of brothers.

Who here wouldn't follow Lt. Winters to hell and back?

Title: Band Of Brothers
Post by: gofaster on April 12, 2004, 09:02:50 AM
Seemed complete to me.  I've only seen Parts One and Two once, on DVD, no commercials.  What's missing?

About the only thing I noticed was that the first ep seemed to end sooner than the one on DVD.  If I remember right, the Part One ended shortly after they landed, but I saw Part One and Part Two nearly back to back (since it was on DVD) and I may be running them together.

The "Mail Call" afterwards was pretty cool.  Certainly worth watching.   Hopefully it will be an "extra" on the History Channel DVDs (assuming they offer them for sale).

Stick around for Part Two.  The action really gets going. ;)

Sobel is a shining example of an officer that can train troops but cannot lead them into battle. He excelled in preparing the unit for combat and what it would face, but as far as having the tactical prowess to actually lead the men into a fight he fell far short. Thankfully for them the higher brass recognized this and put Sobel in a position where his talents would be most useful to the cause. Oh, and near the end when "Cpt Sobel" met up with "Major Winters" it was quite a hoot... "You salute the rank, not the man, captain." bwaaahahahaaaa

Now Lt Dyke... that was another story...

Sobel is not a good example of an officer. His entire motivational technique was punitive. This is NOT how you lead troops, especially troops you expect to go into battle with. The only thing I can say for his character is that he did participate in PT with his troops instead of depending on his NCO's and LT's to do it for him.

If anyone is interested, you can do what I did when I saw BoB the first time on HBO.

It said, Richard Winters left the military and returned home to Hershey, PA where he reisdes today.

I took the time to do a search of the white pages on the internet for him, and he is listed. I wrote him a letter, thanking him for his sacrifices, and signed it from myself, my wife and my daughter.

You know, the man wrote me back, and even included a clipping he took from Time magazine about the show.

Even if he does not write you back, you can drop him a note, showing your support for a group of true american heros.

I don't have the DVD Box Set (yet), but they did edit some things. I didn't hear Sobel call Garnere "Gonoreah" or some of the other off color remarks. What stikes me as strange....They run a disclaimer saying it is "Historicly accurate" and has graphic scenes then edit it PG-13. This is the same network that runs "History vs Hollywood" where they blast films that do exactly what they are doing....revising history to make it safe to watch. Sorry History Channel....2 Thumbs down.

That's strange...he called Malarky "Pvt. Bullchit" and they aired it....

You'd think Gonnorhea would have made it through.

Actually in the book Sobel was described as being in the worst shape out of the entire company.  He almost failed the push-up section of his qualifying fitness test much to the chagrin of the company...most of whom quietly witnessed the test in the background.

The best part of the History channel's showing of this series is the "Real Band of Brothers" episode they are doing between episodes.  They interview all of the survivors and discuss all of the actual events.

Is it the same interviews that apper on the DVDs, or did the History Channel do additional interviews?

I heard it.  One of the fellow soldiers says something like "Hey! Gonorreah!" and he turns around.  But I don't think it was Sobel that said it.

Richard Winters: [real life interview with Winters where he quotes Mike Ranney on how he answered a question his grandson once asked him] I treasure my remark to a grandson who asked, "Grandpa, were you a hero in the war?" "No", I answered, "But I served in a company of heroes".

Richard Winters: That night, I thanked God for seeing me through that day of days and prayed I would make it through D plus 1. I also promised that if some way I could get home again, I would find a nice peaceful town and spend the rest of my life in peace.

George Luz: [Imitating Maj. Horton] Is there a problem, Captain Sobel?
Herbert Sobel: Who said that? Who broke silence?
Edward Tipper: I think it's Major Horton, sir.
Herbert Sobel: Major Horton? Wh, what is he... Did he join us?
Edward Tipper: I think, maybe, he's moving between platoons, sir?
George Luz: What is the god-damn holdup, Mr. Sobel?
Herbert Sobel: A fence. Sir, uh, god... Bob wire fence.
George Luz: Oh, that dog just ain't no hunt. You cut that fence and get this whoopee platoon on the move.

I have BoB on DVD. I saw no editing of language in the History Channel showings on Sunday and Monday.

Easily the best WWII ground war film ever made.

If you can spare the $80, by the DVDs. It's something to show your kids where they can learn what that generation did for the country and for that matter, the world.

My regards,

Widewing

I was just informed that the whole box set is about 12 hours in length? History channel is gonna be showing this series for some time hehe. Think I'm going to plan out a date and watch the DVD all at one time. Watching a series day after day just isnt as exciting/suspensful as watching it episode after episode. Now to find 12 spare hours to squeeze in this series:p

hell half the cast of Blackhawk down were British.  Winters did the best "American" accent I've ever heard from a Brit.  Sounded like he's from the midwest or something :D  That black dude from "Oz" on HBO is british too and he did a pretty damn good accent change too.

Ahhh this gives me memories of Swoop's impersonation of a "Texan" :D  And his surprise that a Texan could recognize his chochney accent ;)
