Title: Iraq is child's play compared to this bad boy
Post by: SunTracker on April 12, 2004, 11:18:18 AM
Right now, in the U.S., there is something with the capability to destroy the whole country.  All the tanks and planes in the world couldn't stop it.

Its a SUPER VOLCANO.  Underneath Yellowstone National Park, theres a lake of magma 50 kilometers wide, 20 kilometers long, and 5 kilometers deep.

Scientists have revealed that Yellowstone Park has been on a regular eruption cycle of 600,000 years. The last eruption was 640,000 years ago…so the next is overdue. The next eruption could be 2,500 times the size of the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption. Volcanologists have been tracking the movement of magma under the park and have calculated that in parts of Yellowstone the ground has risen over seventy centimeters this century.

I think this bad boy is what is going to bottle-neck (or destroy) the human population in the future.

That site is a littly shady.  I went to snopes for a rebuttal, but their page says this is undetermined, so there may be something to it.  The snopes writeup seems a little less alarmist and offers some alternatives, so it might be worth reading if you're interested in the subject:

According to the Bible Code or Nostradamus, or something like that, we're supposed to reach "the end of says" in 2012 due to a comet.  I saw it on the History Channel (or was it Discovery... I can't remember.... I watch them both) this weekend, so it must be true!

It was the incas.. they had a astrological calender... it was very precises, and predicted some major events with in months, but the calender ends on our Year 2012... dunno what month.. They say it ends there because they couldn't finish it, but the markings at the end show some sort of astrological body striking the earth. So... we'll see

I can see it now though. After the US saves all life on the planet Europeans headlines read: "US cowboys destroy ancient celestial body on peaceful mission to Earth" ;)

The end was near in my fathers time too, as it was in my grandfathers.  There were those who didn't plan that considered the end near, and regretted it into retirement. ;)

Always plan ahead, whether it be financially, or be it for a disaster. :aok

All joking aside, if this thing were to explode, the ash would be a mile deep in Yellowstone park.

In PA and the east coast, it would be about a foot deep.

After an explosion, there will be roughly 2-3 years of an iceage world wide.

I'm not sure I would worry too much about a comet/asteroid hitting Earth.

http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/space/04/08/space.collision.reut/index.html

Maybe the Myans were a bit off in their prediction and thought this one would hit in 2012:

Quote
Last September, scientists spotted asteroid "2003 QQ47" and first measurements suggested it could hit the Earth on March 21, 2014, with an explosion the size of 20 million Hiroshima atomic bombs. But the forecast was revised: It won't hit, after all.
