Uhm, it must be, or it's only using AP shells...
Used it today more then normal, Il2's attacked my PT so I opened fire at 3k range. Scored first hit at 2k in the wingtip of the IL2, no dammage, not even an aileron shot off. This was weird enough, so he came closer, in a shallow dive, hit him twice more at 1k both in the nose/cockpit. He started smoking then I died. Asked him what dammage he had, answer was "engine oil".
Now, this may happen one time. However, I hit 3 different Il2's at 2k range, all in the wing tips with the Bofors 40mm gun. (starting to learn to aim it ;) ). I also hit one at 1k right after he took off, result that time was a fuel leak. No dammage at all on any of those I hit in the wingtip.
This just can't be right, I succeded in killing one (not sure, I might have gotten more then one) Il2 with the 40mm, that was after two hits in his right wing at a distance bellow 1k.
Now, this is a 40mm gun, that doesn't mean that it just makes twice as big hole then a 20mm, or 33% bigger hole then a 30mm. It means that it makes one hell of a bang when it goes off. One 40mm should be enough to down any plane, no matter where it hits more or less. I know the Il2 was tough, but not 40mm tough. Specially not when you can take it down quite easily using 50 cal guns in a single high speed pass.
I have film of the PT boat vs Il2 encounter if anyone wants to see.

Il2 is a flying tank....... ;)

Interesting, I know I've survived multiple hits from the Ostwinds 37mm while in an IL-2 before. The trick to killing the IL-2 is to hit it in the rear fuselodge, tail asembly. Those parts will come of rather easily compared to hitting it in the front, I know, I know tough to do when they're coming right at ya. :)
As for what the 40mm SHOULD do I have no clue.

Rgr Soulyss, The Modern Swedish Navy still use more or less the same 40mm gun, modified of course. We use it as an all purpose gun, inlcuding to sink smaller ships with (if we were in war of course). a 40mm shell has got a blast radius greater then a modern hand grenade. Which means one HELL of a punch. I can't see why any plane would survive a detonating 40mm, not even a heavy buff.
Btw, several other navys use the same gun as we do, Bofors guns very popular.

Wilbuz! You can tell your navy that 40mm gun they have is BS and you cant even shoot down IL2 with it and it must be removed from service! :D :D

I'm thinking about it Mipo, might aswell tell 20 other navy's while I am at it

40mm is weak, no doubt.
I've hit B17s and Lancasters with it in the wing root or engines with no effect. It usually takes 2 or 3 hits to down one.
OTOH, put a 40mm into the nose of an oncoming spitfire... HEHE

Rgr Midnight, works fairly well against the smallest fighter, successfully shot og a wingtip from a Jug at 2.5k and he went down (think he was AFK, the Jug can be flown with a wingtip off) but many planes seem to take WAY too many hits from it.

Yea, planes can survive hits from just about anything... occasionally. The IL-2 shouldnt be taking multiple hits from a 40mm on a regular basis though... the Flakpansie can down one with a single hit about 80% of the time, and 2 hits the other 20%. I don't believe I've ever seen a IL-2 take more than a single hit without dying.

Nice picture :)
Urchin, this is one took 3 and survived, multiple times...

Remember, for a plane to go down you have to take out something structural.

I've taken 3 hits from an Ostwind and landed once in an Il-2.
First hit did no damage, second one took out a flap, and the third got half of the other wing. Since now only the flap on the damaged wing was working it gave additional lift to make the plane flyable.

Had this happen the other day. CV ack takes a piece of the wing off. Trying to stay in the air, I drop flaps. Second hit takes out radiator. Third hit takes out flap on good wing. Landed safelly.
