just whiling away the days till the small maps are gone - tum-te-tum...
I have a Q to put to you all about the OZK map. I think it was different from other maps in having a loosely designated area for furballing. So I was wondering how many people made use of this.
Please answer the following poll by giving an answer from 1-5 which most closely describes the way you flew on OZK.
- Only upped at the central furball area, and never ventured beyond this area.
- Operated mostly in the furball area, but made occasional use of the bases in other areas of the map.
- Split my time 50/50 between the furball area and the rest of the map.
- Operated mostly outside of the furball area, but entered the furball area occasionally.
- Operated outside the furball area all the time - NEVER entered the central furball designated area.
Just answer 1 2 3 4 or 5 without giving reasons. That way we might be able to avert a flamefest for at least 12 hours.
Beet1e's response to poll: 5

I went wherever there seemed to be a large fairly evenly matched fight at low alts... mostly this meant the center but I did fight at 3 or 4 other areas with CV's in em till the normal suicide gamers killed the CV and the area returned to high alt horde hide and seek.

[edit]: By 'designated furball area' you mean the central island? If thats the case then I change my answer to 4.
Furballs errupted at random places all over the map. I furballed if it happened in the vicinity of my flight.[/edit]

1 - and it was a blast. I think that's also when YUCCA said he was gonna cry because all I flew was a Spit 5 :D

2/3, CVs would make an appearance on furball island and it would ruin the fights.

but on the last night went furball island crazy.

I dug that aspect. You had to be carful with the CVS around that island. Get them anywhere near enme PT spawns and the CV was toast. It created a cool layer of options. If you had a CV off the coast it allowed the furball to continue even when the fuel pork weenies made it to your field. Other than the weenies capturing the nme fields on furball island the carriers added to the furball.

I looked for the biggest enemy darbar outside the furball island area and headed for it.
-
4 I'm with Steve on this one (lord help me :)). I tried to find the largest fight outside of the center "furball island" area. Though I did venture to the middle islands occasionally to check it out.

I did a lot of F4U birdcage flying on that map, just to keep the spirit.
Made me wish we had a Sherman variant, or at least a Chi-Ha.

Depending on the day/night over the week and what I felt like doing my answer would haveta be
All of the above
Meaning.
1,2,3,4 and 5

4........mostly on the far east side of the map.

East of the furball area to be exact. Was always good fights over the water in that eastern group of islands. No lag either.

Spent most of my time within 4 sectors of our HQ area.

4.
Only jumped into the furball, usually in an Osty or field gun, when waiting for a mission to up somewhere else.
And those only cuz my ACM still suks....yeah, I'm a newbie...proly will be for at least a year.. :D

Thanks, guys. I've just added them up. I've counted only those where the response was a valid integer between 1 and 5 - no 3.5s or 2/3 or anything like that!
Results
I was surprised there were as many 5 votes. And I thought there would be more 1 votes.
The average (using 26 valid votes) comes to 3.69.
-
3, but what makes the center a furball???
I mostly operated out of A84 i think it was... upping a 109, grabing alt really fast and picking out heavy F4us or F6F's.......before augering into the sea, but thats enough about my "skill"
I had some great tank battles around the outer edge. Didnt do any bombing though

So much for the "everyone prefers a fast fight and furball" theory huh (not yours in particular)
Really cant judge by the boards. As only a small fraction participate here.
From what I saw the numbers were bout 50-50

Indeed. I wouldn't use the findings of this poll to make any point, for all the reasons you said. For one thing, out of about 30 replies, 6 came from the TAS alone which, one is led to believe, is a furball squad. The poll was just a little bit of idle curiosity, no more.
-
One finding that came out of it was that a vast majority spent at least some time at Pearl Harbor. Only 8 stayed in the Solomons, Guadalcanal, Phils, etc.
-
I think the amount of people we actually saw at Kaos Island all the time, every time says alot about what people enjoy.

It's 1744 UTC (1844 UK local time and 1344/1:44pm EDT) 197 in the MA right now, and Pizza is up. I think that says what people enjoy. Of course, only about 20 of those use the BBS...

Yes ... but #5 was NEVER entered the furball island fray, while the other 4 had furball island involvment, so those total numbers far exceed #5 leaning towards more people do like to furball in some shape of form.

That was balanced by #1 which never LEFT the furball island fray, while all the others (2-5) had nonfurball island involvement.
But as I said, I wasn't trying to prove anything. Just curious.

That means nothing. You are not talking about a specific area of Pizza where a specific type of fight takes place ... Pizza does not offer that option.
There will always be numbers on ANY map due to the fact that most fly in the MA regardless if they love or hate the map.
I would love to see the average total number of pilots on during Pizza week, compared to the same when OZKansas is up for a week.
I don't think that you would be surprized at all at which map generated the better numbers.

It wouldn't mean anything if what you said earlier was valid, ie There will always be numbers on ANY map due to the fact that most fly in the MA regardless if they love or hate the map.
Hehe, no surprise to me that you work for who you work for! Hehe, I've worked for them myself - 3 separate occasions!

Do you act dumb to get me all worked up or are you just naturally dumb ?
-
The majority of folks who are "cocktail hour warriors", ( U.S. primetime), would fly on anything. Quake arena, Alice In Wonderland Online, whatever. In other words they have a limited tiime to play and they haven`t got a choice no matter what map is up.
Might be interesting to note Thursday morning on Oz there were 87 players, same time Friday on SFMA there were 224 players.

Well you asked for that one. First you say that people are going to go to the MA whether they love the map or hate it, and then you suggest a comparison between two maps using attendance figures to gauge each map's popularity. If the first statement is valid, the attendance comparison will be meaningless. Does the expression "mutually exclusive" ring any bells?
One comparison that can be made right now is to compare the numbers in the MA (with all those guys in there hating every minute) with the number of people in the CT - or in beta AH2. That's right - the much awaited AH2 is there right now, and there'll be what - 20 people in it while the pizza map attracts hundreds?

whats funny is, when Oz or any other map for that matter was up, there were about 2-5 in AH2 beta that i seen, now pizza is up and you say there is 20? :lol hmmm, make ya wonder?:)

Geez Beet take off the blinders and you might be able to see. What I believe Slap was eluding to is the fact that some people don't even log on when Pizza Crap is up. As for those that do, they log on and go to the MA no matter what. To prove this hypothesis, he wanted to see the figures of the total people that logged in to play the map. I agree with slap, I'll bet there are more people that don't log in when pizza is up.

No way is AH2 up right now:lol I ask you this beet, why do 90% of the fields have to be a sector or more apart on this map? Why cant there be an even 50/50 with half the fileds a sector or more apart and half the fileds less than a sector apart? Why are you against this? You can go take your long flights into undefended bases without any interlopers to make you fight and the people that would rather run into a fight can, without flying forever.

Its not scientific, but I haven't seen anywhere near the number of players last night that I saw on OzKansas the other Friday night.
Sounds like they are on to something Beet.

It cracks me up the way you pay lip service to finger in the air hypotheses as provided by Delirium which, on his own admission, was not scientific, but you pooh-pooh real facts supported by photographic evidence. I guess it's a case of believing what you want to believe. :lol
-
Why not? You do the same thing with your polls that have the wholesale value of next to nothing. Heck, you only polled maybe 10% of the AH population that actually reads the AH BBS, fewer yet that read your drivel, and fewer yet that responded to it. To top it off, you threw out some of the votes that didn't meet your opinionated critera

Hehe, this board is full of people who speak without moving their lips (British sarcasm). I answer slapshot and Mars01 replies on his behalf, then I post to Mars and Delirium answers. Now I'm replying to Delirium - maybe slapshot will answer! :lol
Well, Delirium, there's no need to be rude. What have I ever done to you? You should have read what I said further up, which was "Indeed. I wouldn't use the findings of this poll to make any point, for all the reasons you said. For one thing, out of about 30 replies, 6 came from the TAS alone which, one is led to believe, is a furball squad. As for folks not reading my drivel, not only did they read it but no fewer than 6 guys of the TAS participated - a fair proportion of the entire squad - and those are the guys who love to hate me! ;)
I removed only about 3 votes. These were akin to "spoilt ballot papers". I clearly indicated the valid responses - integers from 1 to 5. What is 2/3? Is it 2¼? 2¾? Two thirds? The vast majority responded with valid values. Not my fault if a small handful can't comply.
I said at the outset that this thread would become a flamefest. At least we survived longer than 12 hours.

When do you most of you really discuss anything intellectually without involving the style of ones flying ability, the plane he flies, which map he prefers, or even how many kills he can land? Now thats rare.

Beetle its a total joke that you think cause you posted a few picks and created the context, without the film to back it up, that you have any facts.
So when are you going to answer my questions, instead of skirt them beet?why do 90% of the fields have to be a sector or more apart on this map? Why cant there be an even 50/50 with half the fileds a sector or more apart and half the fileds less than a sector apart? Why are you against this?
Sorry these questions are so inflammatory.:lol

I guess that is a pretty subjective question. No offense, but like I said no one is forcing you to read the posts or participate. If it bothers you that much why do you bother really?

I'm not sure what you are trying to start wldthg, I am not saying you shouldn't post in here. I am only asking, since your posts smack with such discontempt, and the conversations are so weak as you put it, why do you bother?

No Lazs. The answer I asked for was a numeric integer between 1 and 5. 2/3 and 3.5 are not integers. I asked the respondents to give the closest value to what they did, not try to give an exact value involving decimal places. 26 people understood perfectly and gave valid responses before I closed the poll and posted the results. I only had to discount about 3 spurious votes. But if 2/3 means 2.5, then that vote was balanced by the 3.5 vote that I also discounted as these two votes deviated from the medium (3) by 0.5 each. So the end result would have been almost identical. I say "almost" because two people gave 2/3 as an answer.
In any poll, there are spoilt ballot papers. :aok
-
Don't see much difference between 1 and 2. I see 2 as saying - you furballed a good portion of the time and on occasion left the furball area. There could be a reason to leave the furball area. The one that applied to me was that the nits no longer owned any turf in the region.
