I'm convinced that if someone didn't have good Canon glass, the Nikon D70 would be the entry-level DSLR to get to graduate from the P&S cameras. Those still using a Nikon 35mm film camera, this becomes a no-brainer.

Don't get me wrong as Canon's Digital Rebel is a very good camera, just that the D70 just leap-frogged over them as the better camera.

I should get mine within the week and also bought a Nikkor ED AF 80-200 mm 2.8D lens. Spent nearly the same on the lens as i did the camera. I've never had the joy of fixed lens optics.
I plan on shooting alot of wildlife this year.

Will the Quantaray lenses that come with the N80 work on this?
I might be looking at upgrading my uber $50.00 digital point and shoot in the near future, but would hate to have to shell out for another set of lenses.

Everything that came with F80 (F80 here in Europe) must work with D70.
I am not lucky like you are. I have a good set of manual focus (AI and AIs) Nikon F mount lenses, and new cameras don't allow metering with non-chipped lenses. Center-weighted or spot metering will be OK for me, but they deliberately excluded this obvious option from consumer models later then F70.
My friend has an F80, and he really wants to use some of my lenses (like 100mm 2.8) - but he can use them only in manual exposure mode.
Here D70 costs about $1500 for a kit, it's too much compared to Canon 300D. I hope the prices will go down in a matter of months, but still - I see people "dumping" their D100 bodies for about $1200 already.
BTW, one Russian 300D owner have complained that his camera broke after 25000 exposures. Damn, even entry-level Nikon cameras made in early 80s could withstand more. I have an FG now, and looks like I'll have to find an FA in a good condition if I'll want a next "upgrade". I saw a nice FA with Metz TTL flash for less then $150 in a nearby shop... For $800 difference in price I'll be able to buy tons of film... And if I'll add $500-700 for the lenses....

Thanks for the info. Bit depressing to hear they're breaking. My first SLR was a (don't faint) Nikon EM I got way back in Jr. High school. It still works great. Only problem I've had with it was when it started to leak light once. Was a cheap and easy repair.
The N80 was a Christmas present last year. I haven't gotten to shoot with it much yet, but it puts out some great shots so far. Biggest problem I've had with it yet is my skill living up to what the camera is capable of.

How much is the Canon then?
Here the D70 is only $250 more than the D300. Hardly even worth looking at the Rebel, unless you want to buy kickass glass and wait for the D10 to fall in price. The Rebel takes the same quality pics as a D10, it's essentially the same camera just a crappy plastic build with crippled firmware.
I would sell all my film gear and go digital after taking a few thousand pictures the camera and lens pay for themselves.

Got mine last week. So far I'm really impressed with the camera; it's VERY fast, the pictures show a lot of detail, it's customizable to insane levels, and the build quality and feel is excellent. Also it's very easy to use; coming from a F75 SLR I felt immediatly comfortable with the camera.
The only gripe I have with mine is that it backfocuses a little with the 18-70 kit lens; it doesn't happen with the 28-80 that came with my F75. It's noticeable at short distances with long focals, fortunately the 17-80 can be manually overriden, so I can adjust it a little after focusing to compensate, but it's still annoying. I hope it can be sorted out via firmware without sending the camera to be adjusted, because the spanish Nikon importer has a terrible reputation...
