Cut and pasted from another post:
Looks like I have to eat some crow. I just went through some of my sources again, and
discovered that B17's did indeed operate 32K+, though with reduced accuracy. The
source went on to say that "interception above this altitude was nearly impossible".
For me this puts a different spin on things. While I think 40K is excessive, 36K should
be quite possible, even with a full load. Since this falls under the areas of realistic
and historic I now have to publicly admit I have been wrong!
Sure we could talk about crew exhaustion or frozen parts at that alt, but then we
could talk about jammed guns or faulty engines on fighters too. For me, this puts
things more into relative balance, and I will whine no more (about this ).
Sorry to Azrael or anyone else I offended!
Oops, forgot to say this is my admission of guilt! (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/redface.gif)

Now we just have to get HTC to model some ice forming on the wings. :-) AND watch them fall from the skies.
Naw, in all seriousness. It is possible to get to the alt with the 17 in AH. Now i have chased a plane that high in AH, to NO positive effect. I just wobbled from left to right at stall speed, horn blowing the whole time. Thing was the 17 (for its size) seemed to just go abouts its business.
However, this was a patch or two ago, and have not encountered a 17 at this alt with .42/.43.
Has anything changed HTC? Like dolomite said, part froze, engines had probs, occupants freezing, etc.........
I personally would like to attach a 88mm flak gun to my med alt flying C47 and blow them out of the sky :-)

How many bombs were they carrying though?

Seem to recall reading somewhere, that for long range missions the B17 often carried the same bomb payload as the Mosquito did. 4000 pounds sound right?
Goombah? Shacker?
I guess you got your choice, "Get Home" or "Do Alot of Ka-Boom", but not both. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
