Herbert Rollwage was born on 24 September 1916 at Gielde near Goslar in Niedersachsen. He joined the Luftwaffe in 1936. In spring 1941, Rollwage was posted to JG 53. Unteroffizier Rollwage was assigned to 5./JG 53. He claimed his first victory on the opening day of Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of Russia on 22 June, when he shot down a Russian SB-2 twin-engined bomber. By 5 October he had claimed 11 Russian aircraft shot down, including three victories recorded on 27 August. II./JG 53 was transferred to the Mediterranean theatre in December 1941. By the end of October 1942, Rollwage had claimed 20 British aircraft, mainly RAF Spitfires, shot down over Malta. He was shot down in aerial combat over Koufonisi island on 10 November 1942 in Bf 109 G-2 (W.Nr. 105 00) “Black 5”. Rollwage force-landed his damaged aircraft having also received wounds in the enagagement. Operating over Tunisia from December 1942, Oberfeldwebel Rollwage claimed a further six victories. On 2 March 1943, he was shot down in near Pont-du-Fahs following an interception of USAAF B-17 four-engined bombers as they approached Bizerta. Escorting RAF Spitfires chased Rollwage hitting his Bf 109 G-4 (W.Nr. 160 67) and wounding him. He force-landed his shot up aircraft near Bou Arada. It is thought his victor was the British ace F/Lt Roy Hussey (12 confirmed, 1 probable and 4.5 damaged victories, KIFA 20 February 1945) of 72 Sqn, RAF. Relocated to Sicily in May 1943, Rollwage claimed a further 10 victories, including two four-engined bombers. He recorded his 40th victory on 13 June 1943. On 10 July, Rollwage was badly wounded in aerial combat near San Pietro but managed to regain his base although his Bf 109 G-6 (W.Nr. 182 42) was classified as 100% damaged. Rollwage spent several months in hospital as a result. Rollwage returned to combat duty and 5./JG 53, now based at Vienna-Seyring in Austria operating on Reichsverteidigung duties, in December 1943 after recovery from the wounds he received in July. He had 47 victories to his credit at this time. He recorded his 50th victory on 22 February 1944, a Herausschuss of a USAAF B-24 four-engined bomber between Altötting and Straubing. Rollwage was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 5 April for 53 victories. He recorded his 60th victory on 27 May when he shot down a USAAF P-51 fighter near Rambervillers. On 10 August 1944, newly promoted Leutnant Rollwage was appointed Staffelkapitän of 5./JG 53. He recorded his 70th victory on 25 November when he shot down a US Army reconnaisance light plane near Mommerheim. Rollwage left II./JG 53 on 5 December 1944 having been assigned to 2./JG 106 as an instructor. Leutnant Rollwage was awarded the Eichenlaub (Nr. 713) on 24 January 1945. In early April 1945, Rollwage returned to II./JG 53. It is thought that he never officially returned to the Gruppe, rather that after II./JG 53 moved to Ulm-Ristissen, the former base of II./JG 106 which was being disbanded, Rollwage attached himself to II./JG 53 where he stayed until war’s end. He gained a number of victories with the unit. Rollwage survived the war. He died at Gielde on 4 January 1980.
Herbert Rollwage’s victory total is not known for sure but he did fly a total of 664 missions. It is known he was credited with 71 victories, including 11 recorded over the Eastern front. It is thought his final total may be between 80 and 85. Some sources credit Rollwage with 102 victories, including 44 four-engined bombers.

-
Very nice job Batz. I have seen those same kill markings and can't remember the skin site but it was linked from il2skins.com.
-
Cit could you be more specific?

Skinner's Heaven (http://www.1java.org/sh/) was the site that I believe I saw them at Batz.

These German aircraft (and the SBD-5) all look really, really great. Very impressive work.
Now, why are 75+% of the skins we're seeing players do, German?
It seems that HTC will quickly fill out the skins for the German aircraft while still lacking even a second skin for many other aircraft.
Now, I wish I could contribute, but my artisic skills on crap and I haven't got Photoshop. Unfortunately I cannot be part of the solution.

Thanks Reschke!!
I went ahead and ordered this book:

When it gets here I will make a layered set.

Two more slightly better marking pictures for LW kill markings. Sorry haven't found any in color or any reference to colors other than black and white.

this area right here
the 109g10s had a streamlined fairing over the mgs while the g6 had rounded fairings.

Is the "spiral" spinner a part of the 109G-6 3d model (like the tulip used to be), or is it possible to change it?
-
Very nice Bartz ... i'm looking forward to fly it.

Now that's an interesting question.
I don't think I'm biased(not saying you're saying we are! ;) ), but admittably I'm a LW plane fan and naturally when a skinning opportunity rises I choose to set my priorities on the planes I like.
Funny thing that you mention, is that a lot of other skinners seem to be LW fans too.
Tho' I'm working on the P-38L right now, and some very nice P-51D skins are here.. I don't seem to see many USAAF/RAF fans skinning things around.
It seems to suggest that artistic skills and leather-undies fetish is somehow closely linked :D
..
(ps. seriously though, I think it's because most of the new 3D models are the "old" LW planes. They've got the latest what Nate and Supe have to offer, and naturally look best with better skins.
Other problems such as irremoval skin surfaces or "wax coating" in USAAF planes tend to make skinning very difficult.. and since a lot of AH planes are still like that, I think us skinners are just trying to avoid those planes consciously..)
-
Batz,
Did you get my email attachment with the kill markings? BTW at the moment I can't see the new images but I think its on my end since they are loading really slowly.
-
Real nice Batz
If HTC makes that an official skin I think it will be my G6 favorite.

A few reasons why I chose the ac I want to skin
1. I am biased, I wont ever fly an Ami / RAF / VVS aircraft. With the exception of the 205, Zeke or Ki-61 the only planes I fly are German and the G-6 is my personal favorite.
2. There are more mustangs done then any other AC so far. So why not ask the mustang skinners why they havent chosen a spit or a jug etc...
3. Almost all my references are for German Aircraft and I have no interest in building a library filled with planes I care nothing about.
4. Currently the majority of the updated models are German. The Ami / RAF skinners maybe waiting until their favorite planes get updated before they invest the effort. Although I have seen a few Spits done.
This is only my 2nd "skin" with the exception of a few AH1 skins.
My first was a JG 2 d9.
I was in JG2 in AH for a long while, then JG 53. If it was possible to do a good JV44 "Platzschutzstaffel" D-9 I would.
Reschke,
Yes I got your email and I replied to it. The screens above are loaded on the "Picture Hangar". They load fine for me.
GS,
I need to fix the "high-mount" oil fill cap. The particular G-6 above didn't have the larger 50-liter oil tank. Some G-14s had the larger tank but not the G-6 above.

Weird I didn't get a reply on the email the other day but then again my AV program has decided to really tick me off. I see the pictures fine here at the office and the skin looks real nice. Glad you got it and I hope it helped some.

Personally I am waiting on the updated corsair before I give it a shot.
