Title: My rant
Post by: VOR on April 17, 2004, 08:41:04 AM
Why is it people often take credit for events they had no involvement in? Why is it necessary to blame people for the decisions of their respective governments, either current or in the past? And why for Cripe's sake do people read a post by one or two (insert nationality here) and reply to the effect "So this is what (nationality) are like"? Get a grip! Wake up!

I wasn't born until 1973...meaning, I didn't "save yer tulips in WW2". I'd make a hefty wager that most if not all of the people who like to use that phrase or abide by the spirit of it weren't there either, so STFU! Your grandfather (or whoever) was there, you say? So this gives you the right to use the word "we" in your debates? Give me an squealing break. Ask him to make a post here, and I'll hang on his every word. The moment you start using *his* accomplishments and sacrifices as fuel for *your* slanted agenda,  you belittle the efforts of your ancestors and open a big can of worms. The reciprocal is also true...what kind of brainiac looks at a German and says "YOU started WW2" or a Frenchman and says "YOU surrendered"? Please, in the name of all that is holy and sacred, stop embarrassing your country.

Note that although I have centered these complaints on my American countrymen, the same applies to you Canadians/ Europeans as well. This argument fits equally well on either foot if you just rearrange the text, and is certainly not applied solely to the politics or events of the past. I'm choosing not to name names, but you know who you are. Internet warriors one and all.

There...I've doused myself in lighter fluid by saying what I really think, so feel free to strike the match. I feel alot better, though.

I believe "we" is a rhetorical phrase meaning "The U.S." or "The U.K" etc.

Ya except that if "we" don't learn from the toils and tribulations of our ancestors then "we" could and probably will end up "helping" "them"  again.  to this day we are garrisoning europe at a great expense to the american people "us".  I would ask you, what have "you" done in the service of your country? Voting for Gore doesn't count.

P.S.  It's unamerican to have so many euros agreeing with you

hehe just looked at that photo again.  My hair was long on that day because it was taken in the summer.  during the winter it's a quarter inch shorter, that's roughly 6mm for you less enlightened types.

I agree VOR.  Please allow me to rant too because it makes me feel better.  Not directed toward you in particular.  We aren't called Ugly Americans for nothing.  And that term goes back a ways.  Americans are considered fools because of our generosity, often overdone to the point of where it looks like we're showing off and not sincere.  I'm afraid American tourists over seas have given the impression all Americans are rich and like to show their money clips.

But anyway, been going on a very long time...this attitude is how I heard it from my father, who served during WWII.  One thing...most of those tourists were not rich.  And very likely showing off.  To me, that's one explanation of why we are hated by the rest of the world.  Seems like all show and no substance to people who have never experienced total and complete freedom.

It's not that way for most of us, but I see how it breeds contempt amongst nations.  (Heck, most of us taking a trip to Europe would be spending a lifetime of savings for the trip.)  Thing is, Americans go to another country and act like we're still in the US...we think we have rights over there and can do as we please.  In a nutshell, the rest of the world considers us soft and stupid, and have for many years.  We live in a paradise they can only dream of.  For what it's worth, I consider myself very lucky to have been born here.

I have a bit of Viking ancestry Nilsen.:D   Though probably not as much as you.

But my ancestral home is Lincolnshire England (700 years), where the Vikings landed.  Nearest point for the Vikings to land from Norway long before that.:D

My dad told me the ancestral house was 700 years old and built out of sod.  He didn't see it, but I think it was a story passed along by my grandfather on my dad's side, who died before I was born.  I would like to see that structure, even if it's not there now.  Hard to imagine a house lasting that long, built out of sod, but I suppose it could be true.  It boggles the mind how such a structure could last that long.

Because you live in a country were there is no building that old.

When I was student I was in a flat in a house build around 1600 :)
You can't imagine how strong were the wall ,pinning a poster on a wall was an achievement Hercule would have done :D

The Anazai's in New Mexico had buildings that old, or close to it.  They're built out of adobe and look like they were built yesterday.

back before WW2 they really knew how to build solid houses with quality wood. After WW2 the demad for housing went through the roof and they started using "worse" material and new and "improoved" ways of building things. The house i live in atm was buildt almost 200 years ago and there is no sign of it comming down any day soon (will prolly last another 200). Other buildings that were made with the "new and improoved" materials and ways around here some 20-50 years ago needs constant repair and maintnance. Houses from 50's to 70's are a nightmare

yes it a cool place Nilsen sadly I'm stuck 350 km north :(

Leslie I don't remember the kind of tree but I think it's either a oak or plane tree (I'm not sure it's the accurate translation) .
It can be a Mimosa but it's a bit to tall IMO and probably not a Ginkgo as I don't remeber seing leaf like the Ginkgo ones.

This tree is more than 10 meter high (about 30 ft).

There are houses here in Miami and surrounding municipalities made from Dade County pine, a very dense subspieces of Pine. Many are now over 100 years old.  many many homes were made from this pine.  sadly during the construction boom prior to and ending in 1926 with the big hurricane, many of these houses were simply torn down.  The remaining few will most likely remain up for several hundred years.  They are protected by being listed in many of the Town's historic registries and Dade County pine is impervious to moisture and insect damage.  The house I was born in was built in 1509.  but I haven't seen it since I was three years of age.  The streets there are also barely wide enough for a car as they were designed with carriages in mind.

Those are some very nice photos straffo of a very lovely place.  is that Normandie?

Euorpe went into the modular dwelling construction business headlong in the '70's IIRC.  I often thought that those structures would not be long for the world.  Totally lacking in the qualities that I admire most of things European, timeless elegence and superb workmanship with attention to detail.

because "WE" are Americans

ask Keith Matthew Maupin

I don't think those brave "freedom fighters" with the rags on their faces care about the I or you or he that is Mr. Maupin as he is one of us, an American - part of that "WE" you do not seem to grasp.

And I hope "WE" kick the crap out of those holding him captive and their buddies

No it's not Normandie, it's in Angers's town in Anjou very close to the Loire Valley (as you can guess there is wines en good wines in this area :D)

Normandie is a place without wine ...
That's certainly why the Normand are so sad in general :p

And Evreux the place I live is not the prettiest willage of the area ...plus it's 1/10 the size of Angers.
Even if some place are pretty this town was pretty defigured by buildings during the 70's

If it happen you visit Normandie ,Honfleur, Rouens are better place to visit.

Eagler,

I think you may have misunderstood me a bit here. What do you think I am? Do you think I'm not 100% behind the home team or something? If there were any way for me to do anything for Mr. Maupin I'd do it! I sincerely hope that he is rescued soon and that his captors pay the price with their lives. I hope their bodies are televised on Al-Jazeera and the western news.

Can't a guy be a patriotic American without also being elitist? Don't get me wrong here, either...I'm glad to have been born in the USA and wouldn't want to live anywhere else. I'm not going to rub anyone's nose in it, however.

I think maybe my dismissal of the hive-mind mentality is what has caused you to get so upset. If you have a specific accusation to make, by all means come out with it.

By the way, the statement "ask Keith Matthew Maupin" was distasteful and shallow. What, should I start another thread or something? Call him? And what exactly should I ask him? Don't be silly. The best thing I can do for him is to keep praying. It's the only thing I have to offer at the moment.

guess what i was trying to say is that "We" are the sum of all of "our" actions as a Nation, past, present & future

and that the US soldier is being held captive for what "we" have done in the past and present as a country - his captors want "us" dead & gone

Doing ok over here VOR, as you can tell I am at the moment retired from AH until I can get a better schedule.

Still in the Navy reserve, no overseas deployment yet.

Other than that everything is still the same.

As I sit here and type this at 0517 I am still recovering from this weekend's drill.

Our entire Marine detachment here in Houston is being recalled so we had a bunch of lethernecks getting their shots, paperwork in order, and holding inspections.  After seeing the look on thier faces I sure feel sorry for the people who will be on the recieving end of their fury.
