Saw the first half last night.
I think I will watch part 2 tonight.
One thing I didn't like was the fact that the female slave was suddenly living in the cell with Sparticus from the time he went to fight in the games. I thought the gladiators were given a woman for the night, not as permanent companions????
They obviously glossed over all the sleeping with her master that she must have done from that point until they rebelled.
I did like the fact that they showed the guys being burned alive at the games....that was realistic according to what I have read.
At the Collessium in Rome there were games held by Caligula at night. The lighting was provided by crucified Christians being burned up in the same way.
As a side note: I'm willing to bet that some of my distant relatives were killed in the games in Rome, or elsewhere. Perhaps I should seek reparations from the Italians.

I had to go to a college honors banquet and missed it. Hopefully they'll do an encore presentation or make it available on DVD. Glossed over the female slave sleeping with her master? Dahhm you, USA Network! Dahhhm you to HELLLLLL!

Aye but the European parliament is in Brussels, does that mean the Belgians get the blame for anything the French do?

Actually, that's a bloody good idea. Let's just blame Saw for everything.

Cool effect at the end...I can relate. :D
Yup Belgium is to blame...no doubt.
Belgian/French..is there really a difference though?:p

Was looking forward to seeing this adaptation.
Unfortunately, it's got the wrong feel to it. Whatever it is that gives a film an "epic" quality, this one is missing it. I keep expecting Zena or Hercules to show up.
That said... Rhona Mitra is slammin'.

Missed part 2. Got drunk at the ATP tennis tournament they have here every year.
Sandman...I know what you mean. It was missing "something" as you say. (part 1 anyway)

picked up the second half... didn't see the first.
A good deal of Spartacus' military power was provided by dispossed Roman soldiers, unhappily settled on the countryside.
Anyway, yeah it does have that "hercules and xena feel). Undoubtldly this is due to the "TV-quality" shots: lots of "normal angle" shots, middling focus, shooting throughout midday to economize on time, way too much dialog concentrating on explaining the visual details, instead of adding a new dimension, -- in short, uninspired camera work and direction. Kinda like "the passion" come to think of it.
hmmm caligula was emperor when ? in the 40s (CE). Christians weren't that big then. Nero was the first emperor to really start persecuting Christians, blaming the fire of Rome on them, and then going after then in the late 60s.
The Colosseum (or more properly, the "Flavian Amphitheatre") was called the "Colosseum" because of the big-ass statue originally of Nero that was at the entrance when it was built. It was started by Vespasian and finished under his son Titus in the early eighties (CE).
Human torch was a novel form of execution, but it wasn't really used for night games. Executions were usually around noon.
Current estimates of Christians publically executed in amphitheatres put them at less than 1000. Ahh, but those were the good ol' days.
-
Interesting trivia...
In the original Spartacus look at the soldiers racing down a steep hill during a battle scene. A bunch of them forgot to take off their wrist watches.

LOL! Nash, that's great comedic timing.

Yea, I think you are right, it was probably Nero. It was one of the real loonies. It has been a long time since I did the course in Uni.
As far as the human torches go, I remember that vividly from the course. If it is factually incorrect you'll need to take it up with my professor. It wasn't a common thing...it was done as part of one night's "entertainment". The place was light by burning Christians.

that's how we teach history. give 'em a lot of boring details highlighted by a gory picture of questionable authenticity. That way we know they walk away with something.
-
haha Dinger! :D
-
Of course they never like talking about the slaughtering of pagans by the christian emporers of rome.
-
If it bleeds, it leads. Take a course in medieval history, and the only memory of the Crusades most of your classmates will walk away with one lasting memory -- Fulcher of Chartres' description of the slaughter when the Franks captured Jerusalem, filling the Temple up to the ankles with blood.
And if you want more than a B-, be sure to spell emperor right on your next hourly, and distinguish between our definition of pagan and the Roman one.
:D

<---- a victim of a questionable teacher of history I suppose.
I was unfortunate enough to get an equally questionable degree in Political Science.
Once this part of my questionable eductated was complete I went into accounting and became a CPA and a CA.
The history and political science did enable me to chat about virtually any subject while at cocktail parties, so it wasn't a total loss.
