Interesting show on Comedy Central.. here is the top 20.

 1. Richard Pryor
 2. George Carlin
 3. Lenny Bruce
 4. Woody Allen
 5. Chris Rock
 6. Steve Martin
 7. Rodney Dangerfield
 8. Bill Cosby
 9. Roseanne Barr
 10. Eddie Murphy
 11. Johnny Carson
 12. Jerry Seinfeld
 13. Robin Williams
 14. Bob Newhart
 15. David Letterman
 16. Ellen DeGeneres
 17. Don Rickles
 18. Jonathan Winters
 19. Bill Hicks
 20. Sam Kinison
-
Well, one that I would debate would be Woody Allen @ #4

-
Robin Williams and Sam Kinison are both ranked too low.

-
I caught some of this, in the #49, 50, and 51.  It was cool to see some of Freddy Prinz's work being recognized.  I was too young to see him perform so I'm glad I could catch the video sample that they used.  I can't believe they rated Dennis Leary over Lewis Black.  It was rigged!

I never really "got" Jonathan Winters' humor.  Seemed a bit slow in pace.  Maybe it was just the times he was in.  Sam Kinison should've been rated above Jerry Seinfeld and Ellen Degeneres.  Funny as Jerry and Ellen are, their stand-up acts were a bit flat compared to Sam's emotional outburst comedy.    "I'm living in Hell!  Ahh!  Ahhhhh!"

 Who is/was Bill Hicks?

Same here.  Woody may make funny films, but his stand-up act isn't comedic genius.
-
" I really didn't mean hell was like club med, I was only kidding! OH!! OH!! OH!!"

-
Bob Hope and Billy Crystal didn't make the list? Noy a very credible list.

-
Bill Hicks is a pretty smart guy who wants desperately to be Lenny Bruce. He really hit it big in France.

Crystal made it, just not the top 20.

I was wondering about Bob Hope myself.
-
I'll Have to look this up and take a look.

Where are Red Skelton and Mort Saul?

Agree a top 20 without Bob Hope it pretty lame.
-
That's not a good list!  What about Buddy Hacket?  Roseanne Barr above Eddie Murphy?!

Crystal is a hack, and bob hope was just a dog and pony show for troops overseas. He didnt really change the way people look at stand up comedy or push any boundrys. Which is what comedy is all about.

I thought it was about being funny.
-
Couple more I would have expected to see on that list, at least well above Rosanne Barr, Carol Burnett and Milton Berle.

-
I can't believe Woody Allen and Chris Rock are in the top 20.

-
Yea, not much of a Chris Rock fan either.

Stephen Wright is good ("I had a dog, I named him 'Stay'.  He always seemed confused when I'd call him... 'Come here, Stay, come here' " )

well that is implied. But when you have the same act for 50 years your not funny. (ie bob hope)
-
Yeah, I was never much of a Bob Hope fan either.

I was just disagreeing with the idea that comedians have to “push the boundaries”. A lot of guys try to see how far they can go by being provocative, offensive, seeing what they can get away with, etc. Anybody can do that. Trouble is, they just ain’t funny.

It’s got to the point that some people think being a comedian is about being shocking instead of about being funny.
-
The only thing funny about Jerry Seinfeld is Larry David.

-
				Gotta agree with Myelo here.

I'm also turned off by the trend over the last several years to get in the spotlight and blast a bunch of political shotguns instead of actually telling jokes.

Yea his name was andrew dice clay.

You have to push boundrys be orginal and funny to make that list it. Notice none of those standup comedians actually do much standup anymore or when they did it, for very long. They didnt beat their material like a dead horse. Although robbin williams is getting annoying these days.
-
i have Jerry Seinfeld  @ # 809873094. there is also another american that i never can remember the name of that should get into top 10...anyone know his name?

-
bah seinfeld is great, but i will admit either you love him or you hate him.

-
Robin Williams has always been annoying, but he started to peg out the annoying meter back in the late '80s.  He changed his material a bit to be less crude, but he's still annoying.  I'm not a fan of hyperactive rapid-fire comedic insanity.

"The only thing funny about Jerry Seinfeld is Larry David."  You hit the nail on the head.
-
David Letterman does stand up? News to me...

-
You can put Carlin in a Trash Bag and send him to the dump, but Martin, Dangerfield and Kinison are pretty good.

Buddy Hackett was the best!!  If you had ever seen his Vegas show or heard his story telling before he should be ranked in the top 20.  He was classic!

 WhereTF is CarrotTop??  :p  LOL!

-
Jackie Gleason sorta did standup on The Jackie Gleason Show. Definitely one of my top 20 favorite comedians.

-
Bill Hicks was actually pretty funny.  Believe he died of cancer awhile back, pretty young to.

Joe Rogan and Dave Chapelle, 2 really funny standup guys, better then most on that list.

 Where was andy kaufman?
-
				Love Kinison....... Carlin Sux

-
Heh, my dad met Bob Hope once. Interesting story.

Carlin's good, so is most of the people on the list. Pryor surprised me, but he was a funny man.

I thought Kenison would have been higher...

CarrotTop is a comic wannabe with quite possibly the most annoying voice on the planet. I almost cancelled my AT&T account out of protest for having to endure those horrid 1800 CALL-ATT ads with him in it.

Woody Allen at #4 is a joke in itself.

Bob Newhart is a genius when he does his "phone call" routine.

Chrisk Rock shouldn't be that high on the list, either. Move up Dick Gregory and Dangerfield.
-
LOL...forgot all about Sinbad.  He's ok.

 4. Woody Allen <-- Remove, replace with Cosby.

 Put in Ron White Instead.

Alot of "standup comedians" seem to be ranked on their TV or movie prowess.

Jerry Sienfeld shouldn't be in the top 50.  He had a great show, but his standup didn't carry well on it's own.

Ellen had a decent standup show too, but I seriously doubt it was a top25 show.

I did like Roseanne in the top 25.  Someone that smurfy has to be decent to make it as big as she did.

I do think Buddy Hacket should have been higher on the list... and Chris Rock a bit lower... but neither are overwhelming oppinions.  Chris Rock's newer stuff is pretty damn good.  His older stuff was weak and he was  totally uncomfortable in front of the audience.

I actually think Andy Kaufman should have been a bit lower and Sandra Bernhardt not even on the list.  Andy was more of a performer than a commedian... even an "artist".  More than half of the things he did were simply to see how people would react to it.  If he were allive today, he'd be called the grandfather of the troll.  Anyone that thinks Sandra should be on the list at all hasn't seen her show.

Oh yeah, the Amazing Johnathan should have been on there somewhere.

-
I'd bump Lewis Black up a couple notches.

He may be #75 on the Stand-Up list, but he's #1 on the Executive Transvestite list. :D
Seriously, have only seen him do stand-up on his HBO special but I have never laughed so hard. His act was one of the funniest I've ever seen. His website won a 2003 Yahoo People's Choice award.

A couple guys that should have made it:
 The Amazing Johnathon

 Ollie Joe Prater
-
No one is taking issue with number one. Neither would I. I actually think Ellen is underrated. So is Paula Poundstone.

-
*GASP!*  I didn't even see Lewis Black on the list nor remember him.

I think Paula Poundstone is underrated, but will disagree forever with Ellen's placement on the list... or even in the top 25.

I like Black as well, but if they move him up, they're going to have to move Mort Sahl up also. :D
