Introduced new legeslation to repeal the states current rolling smog emissions test exemption for cars 30 years old or older..
this is an exemption that takes into consideration that 30 year old cars are not being driven much and smog parts are not available or were so ineffiecient as to cause more problems than they solved... it is an exemption for those who would restore and enjoy old cars.
the impact on the environment from these cars is miniscule. this is simply a nanny law by the enemies of fun..
you guessed it... women democrats.

-
Isn't that "30 year exemption" set up to end with the '75 model year cars? We had a 25 year exemption here that ended with the 75s. They're still exempt from smog rules, but there aren't any later years being added.

2 bits Jay Leno says something about this in his monologue.
-
mini... 76 is the cutoff date. older cars will still be exempt. Still... what is the point? how many 30 year old cars are out there being driven more than a couple of thousand miles a year?
more nanny silliness from the party of the enemies of fun. every stupid bussybody law passed is passed by the democrats... the party of women and womenly men.

I agree with Laz2, shows an awfull amount of near sightedness and lack of grip with reality.
-
Were you thinking of buying some mid-1970s piece of crap?
-
there is some 80's stuff that might be interesting in a decade... there is a lot of mid 70's stuff that is interesting too... imagine mercedes and BMW with with small block V8's for instance... A little BMW convert with an alluminum small block V8.. or some of the jag sedans with big blocks... many interesting possibilities. try to grow some imagination MZ.
helmet laws... seatbelt laws.. 10 round magazines... ugly gun laws and a myriad of restrictions on cars guns and hobbies all the way down to model rockets and anaconda snake skin boots... night vision bans and 50 bmg rifle bans that poison gas additive and a bunch of other wacko environmental stuff... all democrats versions of "you will shoot your eye out" or it's for your own good. PC and "hate crimes" affirmative action...
Look... none of us here really knows crap about economics and politics and foreign policy but... we can be assured that if we vote democrat more of the above will be jammed down our throat by those women and womenly men.
lazs
-
we dont need helmet or seatbelt laws cause if your stupid enough to go without you get what you deserve
of course theres no laws against someone marketing a fake smog control mechanism designed specificly for those cars...loopholes = good
-
Sure, the BMW M1, Maserati Bora, Dino, or a few other exotics might be cool to have, but by and large mid-70s cars were crap and you know it.
Hasn't every US car since 1974 required catalytic converters anyway?
-
there are dozens of neat 70's cars from every country that aren't worth messing with because of smog restrictions.. catalytic converters do not need to be on the exempted cars and even if they did.. converters are not big power robbers in any case.. especially modern high flow ones.
late 70's el caminos could be neat with the right drivetrains and those year vetts handle very well and are dirt cheap at this point. They used to give away 72 chevelle/elcaminos when they were still smog tested... now that they are exempt they are valuable "classic American muscle cars" worth 10 times as much.
lazs
-
vorticon.. not sure if I understand you but I agree that we do not need seatbelt or helmet laws and that we should be able to make that decision without our mommies.
I don't know what you mean by makeing a fake smog control device... there would be no need for such a thing on exempted vehicles. Modern vehicles are all computer controled and the smog devices are part of the computer system. the smog testing computer talks to the cars computer.

I own two vintage cars, a 65 Fairlane and a 62 Thunderbird.
The problem with 'smog' laws is that these older cars really cannot be brought up to specs short of a total redesign. Many of the great engines of the 60's and early 70's-the 351 Cleveland, the 427 Side Oiler, the 327, the 427 Rat, etc. were killed off was because they couldn't fit into the smog testing. Retrofitting some of these cars might bring them up to some kind of smog standards but the cost would be prohibitive and destroy the 'original' value of some of these cars.
I do actually drive the 65 Fairlane on a regular basis. I restored her to drive everyday to work. Her mileage isn't any worse than a Grand Marquis or any other car of her size. I think old cars should be inspected for mechanical defects, mostly for safety reasons, but smog proofing them is pretty stupid if you ask me. I would also say it is illegal, it is an ex-post-facto law and something that probably wouldn't make it through the courts.
-
My jeep drives almost exactly 9 miles a day to and from work. It is only 12 years old and allready it has cost me ALOT of money to have it meet emissions standard in a state (kalifornia) that I'm not even a resident in.
Last summer I replaced my engine and I SOOOOO wanted to drop a V8 in it BUT because Kalifornia laws I was unable to even though it would have been SOOOO much cheaper.
A guy I work with drives a 77 corvette...he's got ALOT of high performence parts on it but can he drive it.....NO he cant.
I'm all for better environment but I think enough is enough

Move to Montana Lazs!

Yeah, that will help STRK.
What is your opinion on this? Or are you just trolling to see who rises to the occasion. An Ex Post Facto law is unconstitutional. It can't be any more plain than what the constitution says.
What will be next, manditory upgrades on wiring in all houses built before 1980? I can see how some people will probably not be able to afford that. Who will help? Uncle Sugar I suppose with low cost home improvement grants. I suppose a small surcharge on all home mortgages can contribute to the cause of that.
Hows about manditory removal of all lead paint from houses built before 1960? Not covering, absolute removal of all paint. Think of the children. Think of the humanity. Think of the cost. Oh wait, only rich people live in old houses. Only rich people drive older cars.
Lets just idiotproof the entire world. It will be pretty bland but hey, we will all be bored to the age of 90 together.

I agree with Lazs, especially if we are talking about cars that people have rebuilt. I think Gunslingers jeep costs are ridiculous too. All the new cars have computers and fuel injection and emissions controls, and there are far more newer cars on the road.
Lazs is wrong about the Prius though. Not that I have one, they are ugly as hell. The hybrid engine is a no brainer though imo. Ford has a suv coming out this summer that gets 40 mpg and has 4wd with a hybrid engine.

Why wouldn't a stock, perfectly maintained, 77 corvette pass a modern emissions test? Just askin'
-
You need to move from the land of the fruits and nuts, Laz.

1973 2002 tii immediately comes to mind as something cool from the 70's as does a 1972 442 or a 1970 TA or a 1968 Z28 with the 302 or or or

Seriously. Who buys junk from the 70's?

Well I can understand that this law might piss some people off but what are you doing about it? *****ing on a game BBS? Why dont you make them change it by getting some people together and petitioning this stupid law. Better yet, drive your 30 year old free flow 500 HP monster around town anyways.
:D

Classic.

The reasoning behind those laws is that the injured drive up healthcare and insurance costs.
I don't agree with the laws..... in a "free" market, heathcare and insurance costs would regulate themselves. Seatbelt and helmet laws are just more interference with personal rights and free markets.
The more government tries to regulate a market, the worse it usually gets for everyone.
-
Nuke, it is not a free market. Insurance is required.

1974 is the magical year. There are a *few* cool cars from then, like the 914 I drove for a while.
Will some gearhead please step forward and answer my question as to whether a well maintained 74+ car with cats can pass the CA smog test?
I do agree with Lazs though that the number of 30+ year old cars being driven long distances daily in CA is very small and that this is probably a dumb idea.
What is the bill number?
-
right. '74. brain fart. *looks for bottle of memory enhancement supplements*.

not wearing seatbelts and helmets may cost money? uhh... how bout your insurance company ask you if you do either and charge accordingly.. if money is so important with insurance and healthcare how bout doing something worthwhile like tort/malpractice reform?
why are people allowed to hike and swim? they cost billions in healthcare every year? smoking? overeating? not taking your vitamins? not taking a nap in the afternoon? cursing? lets just go ask your mom what she thinks you should be able to do shall we?
yeah.. I need to get out of california and leave it to the women and girly men... couple more years to retirement... watching my real estate get to the point that I can cash out and have a nice place somewhere warm like nevada or nm or Texas or something.
prius? don't care about em so long as nobody make me buckle up and ride in one.

Move to Alabama lazs. The home of free firearms and open exhausts. Everybody owns a few rifles and handguns. The standard operating procedure when purchasing a new truck is discarding the OEM exhaust and installing flowmasters. Of course we have a redneck or two. But what the hey? What's an "emission test" anyways?
-
I may.. will be looking around when I retire. will have a lot of california overpriced realestate cash in hand..
Don't really like humidity tho.
lazs

You sure it's 76 lazs? 75 is the year most states stop this rolling exemption because of the catylitic converter.

not stock...but beutifully maintained....it is an awsome vette....read the thread he has alot of High performance parts on it and the stock engine is long gone.
Being military we are forced to move to emissions state and comply with their regulations or not drive our cars. It sucks but that's the way it is

If we idiotproofed the whole world, natural selection would come to a grinding halt. Then all those people that should have died will live to mooch off of Social Security, thus compounding the problem.

Healthcare in PA has gotten so bad because of our sue-happy residents that they actually capped pain and suffering damages in lawsuits to $250,000. Try telling that to the guy who had the wrong foot amputated.
-
pain and suffering damage caps do not affect lost income suits.
There is some indication that life saving devices cost more in medical than having the people die in the wreck. either way... let the people who pay decide.. the insurance companies and the drivers.
