I'm not sure exactly what the political leanings are around here, but I thought I would throw this one by, just because I found it profoundly interesting for a variety of reasons:

Most of us keep our political views pretty close to the chest....

What exactly did you get out of this article of typical Michal Moore radical B.S.?

I generally keep mine just past my sleeve..........

He is talking about the armed private 'police force' that is being used over there. Yes 'mercanaries' as you call them. Sure there is private contractors over there building water plants. I dont see why the iraqis cannot do it themselves though for half the cost.

I am serious. They had infrastructure before we came. They have qualified people and building contractors over there. I just do not understand why we have billions going to a company that recieved a no bid contract. Which is the point that really bothers me.

I find it interesting that Moore can speak so lowly of those private security types (a lot of whom are in the employ of the federal government anyway) whom are essentially out there assisting in the fight for his basic rights, including (although not exclusive to) his right to continue making horse **** propoganda movies.
Actually, it's interesting to note that despite moores proclimations about how bad GW is, I don't remember GW ever doing anything at all to Moore.....you'd think that good ol' dubya would have had him disappeared by now....
-
Most of the infrastructure targets were taken out during GW 1. They've had over 10 years to fix things. What makes you think they can do it now? If we weren't rebuilding stuff for them you lefties would be whining about that too. Give me a break.

I am just whineing about the no bid contracts that we gave out. And they did have power and water for those 10 years you know. When we were not randomly hitting them with cruise missiles. Give me a break.

Randomly hitting with cruise missiles... lol.
Taking out air defense targets shooting at aircraft enforcing the no fly zone is more like it.
You ever dealt with federal construction contracts? I've been on both ends. If they had put all the infrastructure contracts out to bid you guys would be whining about delays.

Well we do have to give you something to whine about.

Aren't you a little bit overly romantic here? They are out there to make some money and a few perhaps partly for the thrill. Or do you believe that any of them actually have a calling to go there in order to achieve something 'higher'?
Come on..

Remember, the American people are not that stupid.
Mr. Moore is dreaming. We are indeed that stupid.

No Corporation Left Behind!

I'm sure that these private security types are there to make money. A good deal of them are ex-high risk military. Those skills are valuable, although not entirely marketable in the private sector.
But I'm going to go ahead and yell 'irrelevant' at this point. These people's reasons for being over there fighting with arabs has nothing to do with what I said. I simply said that ultimately, these individuals are over there fighting, in the employment of the United State's federal government, for our interests and (given the nature of the war) for our security.
Most of the guys whom I know are in the military are there because when they graduated high school they didn't have anything else they could do or because they thought the ROTC package was nice. Never the less, some of those individuals are over fighting a war which is in the name of the American people, just as the private security forces, despite being well paid for their time and skills, are doing accomplishing tasks in America's interest.
Now, those statements aren't entirely exclusive, I'm fairly certain that there are those who's assigned tasks have nothing to do with us. But once again, that in no way mitigates the entire army of men over there doing some work for uncle sam.

They come from around the world seeking a piece of the American tax dollar pie. http://www.alternet.org/story.html?StoryID=18193

I work in the industry. Let me give you a barebones timeline of the process, for, say a waste-water treatment plant, funded by the Feds:
Day 1, year 1: Need is determined.
Day2-182, year 1: Specifications are drawn up(very generous here, this is an emergency WWTP).
Day 183-365, year 1: bid is announced, documents are available for bid.
Day1, year 2: Bid date
Day 182, year 2: Contract award is announced, documents and drawings are finalized.
Day 1, year 3: construction starts.
What a no-bid job entails is a cost+ project. On these, I would guess it is cost+3%, with an inverse bonus scale for total cost. This is the best, and only quick way, to get work done.

Nope, these ROTC guys and girls did not join to go to war. The mercenaries did or do you think Blackwater also offers rather interesting education constructions?
So there is a considerable difference between GI's having to fight over there and mercs wanting to fight there for the extra pay-check. You can hardly ask any US citizen to think that mercs are fighting for their rights out there, it is a bit over the top.
.
-
Well actually you can. It doesn't matter what their motivations are, it matters what their actions are.
If their actions are protecting our rights, then they are, in fact, protecting our rights.....with or without a paycheck.

Always strikes me as funny to hear this statement that "They didn't join to go to war"
As Ex-Military I knew very well when I joined that I could end up there. But then again I joined to "Serve" my country.I guess according to that statement they didn't. They should have thought about that before they SIGNED THER DAMN PAPERS.;)
