Very cool technology, it works by electric charges instead of firing pins.  If anyone's interested, I'll dig up the video of it firing a 180-round burst at 1,000,000 rpm.

It's really technology that isn't of much use.

It can fire 180 rounds at a time.  Then you need to completely reload it.

Meanwhile, the Vulcan can fire at 2000 rpm + and knock a missile out of the sky.

Now if they would just make a 1,000,000 round clip . . .

btw Ive seen the Vulcan system work in real life - it is awesome.  5 inch guns are cool too.  BOOM you feel it in your gut.

I was stationed onboard of the USS Bigelow (DD942) it was one the test platforms for the CIWS (Phalanx) in 1978.  They flew  drones at it.  the drones were vaporized in under 100 rounds for two drones.  It was awesome to see.  when it was fired you could not distinguish a single detonation, it sounded like a zipper on a long coat being pull very fast.  phenomenal weapon.

I joined the USS Fife (DD991) for a three week cruise out of San Diego in 1987.  I served most of my time with the USMC except for this brief period on the destroyer.  I had worked on a fishing boat before the Navy and really wanted to serve on a ship.  There is something really cool about being "haze gray and underway" on an american warship and I am glad to be able to say I not only did that but I took the helm of that mother one wonderful night

The spruance class destroyers had twin props powered by 4 GE gas turbines and about 15 minutes of devastating whup ass.  VLS Tomahawks in the bow (I want to say 7 rows of 7), which are nuke capable btw, fore and aft 5 inch, ASROCs, Sea Sparrow, Harpoon launchers, Mk 46 torps, 2 of the Phalanx systems, and  a Seahawk helicopter.   Fife was ASW so she had the towed array.  Combat Systems looked like something out of star wars.

She was relatively new when I was on her, decommissioned in Feb 2003 iirc

That's slang for Hospital corpsman they are attached to the USMC at times.  either that or a Chaplain.  ( turn your head & cough )  "gentlemen, don't cough in my face when I'm holding your nuts".  Those were the first official words I heard upon enlistment.

Hehe, the only practice our GM's got with their 3"/50's was when they got to paint a triwall bright orange, throw it over the side, sailed away to about a quarter mile, engines on slow...then they fired at the target at about 2 rounds a minute.  It SUCKED being a GM on my ship (AFS-5).  It sucked being an SK too but thats a different story altogether.

Cheer up Diablo,  the only fun we had was setting up an electric motor with a timer, had it hooked up to a growler in an unused space. set it to start growling our division officer's stateroom on the 2JV at 0200 sporatically.  he never found it.  drove him nuts.  he finally had to lighten up.  Also had a shipmate that collected officer's hats.  when a rear admiral (CO comcrudesgru 12) came and had lunch on board, this intrepid BM3 lifted his hat.  pandemoninum ensued when the admiral could not depart due to his inability to cross quarterdecks (in the navy you cannot salute unless your covered)  it took his orderly almost three hours to come up with a replacement hat.  NIS returned a little later and they turned the ship upside down, questioned the entire ships crew.  they never found the hat.

The Metal Storm handgun employs electronic locking, which can limit firing access and stop unauthorized use. It can even be programmed not to fire within, say, the grounds of a school.
Hmm. I knew someone else who had a gun like that...

Be great as a perimeter gun set to a motion/heat detector.

not sure I get the logic of having a gun programed to not shoot within so far of a barrier or.. be electronicaly blocked... seems that the bad guys would not use those guns or... put a different chip in em...

net result... the bad guys would be armed but the good guys would be helpless... or... even more helpless than they are now.

yes.. I am aware of the "ring guns" with a chip in them but this is different... this makes the gun inoperable when it is within certain electronic areas.

really bad idea.

make the chip out of something that oxidizes very very quickly...

give them a activation code or something that the chip downloads from the blocker...that way cops storeowners teachers and banks can have there guns work while the baddies wont...nothing stopping them from using a traditional gun but these ones shoot bloody fast so the good guys have a advantage...

Largest percentage of CMOH in Navy are awarded to HMs.

When you need real estate, no one takes it like US Marines

Aside from missile defense it has very little use aside from say, holding the entire Chinese army off singlehandedly.

vort... the bad guys won't have chips in their guns or have guns with modified chips... they will also have jammers to kill the good guys guns... make em think they are in a no gun zone so to speak.

When you clever lads figure out how to stop hackers and spammers then I might listen to your compter chips in guns theories.

till then.. I'll stick with old tech.
