... would you seriously try to manipulate who drafted him?
Archie Manning (http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040422/ap_on_sp_fo_ne/fbn_chargers_manning) may or may not be playing the media.
Of course, if I were in the Chargers draft warroom, I'd trade down and try to claim a couple of good players farther down the line. Eli Manning can't save the Chargers by himself.
edit: Didn't Elway do something like this, by declaring that he wouldn't play for the Baltimore Colts because they sucked big time, so the Colts traded his draft option to the Broncos?
-
Kind of makes the draft useless if the players pick their teams instead of vice versa.
-
I'd take a half decent veteran over a number one draft pick anyday.

I see no problem in any of this. A player should have every right to try to influence how his career will proceed, so long as he does so within the letter of the law. This goes for asking a family member who has influence to exercise it, IMO.
I agree San Diego would get more value from the draft by trading down, regardless of Manning's desires.

If not, then any team in the Serie A.

We're not talking the girly game of Soccer, where men dress like tourists in Hawaii... we're talking manly stuff here, the sport that takes muscle, and is so dangerous that protective pads and helmuts are necessary.

You do not understand, they will not get more value because the action of Eli and his dad has just devalued their pick.

Soccer is a word made up by people, who don't have the talent to play a physical game with finese, in order to distinguish it from the knuckle dragging slamming of heads exercise that they call "football".

Hell, Soccer takes skill? What, running? They don't even use half their body! ;) Of course their hands are too busy grabbing each others booty.
Finesse=Estrogen
Knuckledragging=Testosterone.

Yeah, it takes alot of finesse for two guys to smack their heads together w/o head gear because they can't use their hands. Or jumping up and down while they cover their groin with both hands, ahhh, finesse.

lol...
Only a select few players on each team in American football ever touch the ball in any given game. Your accusation of the real football involving just running is hilarious.

That's a valid point. I guess the way the NFL sees it is, the draft is set up to give each team the rights to that player. The player is under no obligation to play for that team, but if he doesn't then he can't play for the NFL at all.
I look at Bo Jackson and John Elway's situations. Bo elected to avoid playing for the Buccaneers by playing baseball instead. Elway forced a trade.
I can think of worse teams to play for than the Chargers. Arizona Cardinals comes to mind. Detroit Lions is another. Bengals and Browns, too.
At this point, San Diego would be foolish to draft Eli, unless they threaten a trade to any of the above-mentioned teams.

They can't do that either, cause those teams would never trade up to draft him knowing he only wants to play for the Giants.
They could have chose to try and keep it between them(Eli and dad) and the Chargers, but they went public. I don't think Tagliabue is very happy about them undermining the very purpose of the draft.

San Diego should just pick Robert Gallery with the #1 pick. Actually, the Chargers should do that even if Archie and Eli weren't cryin' on Tom Condon's shoulder all week.
I think Archie just wants an All Manning Superbowl, thus Eli needs to go to the NFC ;)

Gallery would be a safe pick, and wouldn't that put the Raiders in postion bargain. If the Chargers do not trade the pick, saturday should be an interesting watch. It was rumored that the Pats were going to trade with the lions for the 6th pick, and I thought to myself "why do that when Washington has only three picks in the whole draft and would probably be more willing to swap for picks". Well, rumor in today's globe says a possible swap with Washington. Stay tuned.

Its just good old fashioned ribbing, Curval. Don't take it seriously, (but don't be grabbing my booty either!)

there was a wild rumor running out of control last week that had the Skins sending the Chargers the 5th pick, Chris Samuals, and Patrick Ramsey, for the Chargers 1st, and additional picks.
As a Charger fan, I would **** myself with Glee if we wound up with Samuals, Ramsey and the 5th overal.

I heard something of this, I think the sticking point is Samuels contract. The Redskins are not happy with him because he will not rework his deal to give them some cap relief. I would be surprised if the Chargers took on that contract. But even Ramsey and the 5th overall isn't that bad.

Elway played the "I'll play baseball instead" card too. He was drafted by the Blue Jays as a pitcher. They said he was pretty good too.

Yeah, but that didn't work either cause he refused to pitch and wanted to play 3rd base.

actually the chargers devalued their own trade position. if you read the link it says they contacted the chargers privately and the chargers made it public.
they could easily have kept their mouth shut and traded him as a valuable commodity. who'd want a guy who didn't want to be playing for you?
I don't care what you are trying to do, anybody is better to have with you than someone who doesn't want to be there.
if thats how he felt, he was doing the right thing by warning them he wasn't looking forward to being on their team.
-
You don't suppose Eli knows he's overvalued, do you? I mean, let's face it, Charger fans are going to expect him to turn the team around since he's #1 in the First Round and a QB. That's a lot of pressure for a rookie who may or may not be a great player.

No, I did not read the Yahoo link, I read ESPN, they didn't mention it. But if that is the case, then yes, they screwed themselves, unless, of course, they figured that Eli and dad were letting the Giants know also, the team he wants to play for. Who knows who else he told?
they could easily have kept their mouth shut and traded him as a valuable commodity. who'd want a guy who didn't want to be playing for you?
Then you might as well just do away with the draft, if everyone didn't want to play for a bad team and got their way, then what is the use having it?
I don't care what you are trying to do, anybody is better to have with you than someone who doesn't want to be there.
Again, then what is the point of the draft? You think everyone who got drafted by the Bengals the last ten years wanted to play there?
if thats how he felt, he was doing the right thing by warning them he wasn't looking forward to being on their team.
He is doing the wrong thing by undermining the foundation of a league that is going to make him a millionaire. It's called being selfish.
-
or he could just be worried he's gonna get hurt before he has a chance to shine enough to make endorsment deals.
you don't often see guys from bad teams making much cash. and a football career can end rather unexpectedly.

From what I've been reading, the Giants were the only team out there who was offering anything in an attempt to get manning. The chargers pretty much said that they were not offering enough, and the deal looked like it wasn't going to go through. When the Skins came into the picture, it was theorized that they were trying to get Robert Gallery, and the cooling of that trade rumor lead some to speculate that the Skin's were content that the Chargers were going to take Eli with the first, and they could trade with the Raiders/Cards/Giants and still get their man (although with Eli off the board at #1, they would have had to go before NY, who presumably would have taken him).
Now any team who wants the draft Gallery is going to have to trade up to the top spot to ensure that they ge him. If the Chargers weren't getting the value they wanted by dangling Eli, now they are trying again by dangling Gallery.
Personally, when you have a top 4 that are so close as they are this year (Gallery, Manning, Wiliams, Taylor) I don't think that you're going to be able to move the pick with anything approaching a good deal. I hope they keep the pick, draft Gallery, and use the Eli nonsense as an excuse to downplay the fan outcry that is sure to result from such an un-sexy pick.

If he is afraid of getting hurt, he is in the wrong league. And he would be on a team with one of the top young running backs in the league. He wouldn't be asked to pass all the time. And if I remember correctly, didn't the Giants offensive line play, well, offensive?

There is so much fiction in that statement it isn't funny. You are paid in according to where you were drafted, every team has a salary cap and every team has a rookie alotment. You can get injured on any team, remember last year's Pats team? Who had more injuries than them? And Roosevelt Colvin's injury may be career threatening. I think they went pretty far, the Superbowl I think.

Breaking news on ESPN, Chris Mortensen is reporting Manning will sit out the season if the Chargers draft him.
Well, so much for worrying about making money. They should make a new rule to keep this crap from happening, like if you do that you can't re-enter the draft for three years. That will put an end to that.
-
Maybe the Yankees will draft Manning as a pitcher so he can sit out in a AAA club until his NFL draft option expires. :p

AMEN!!! After all the days and nights of working with him to get to this point it would be nice to not have a house payment and to be able to get up in the mornings and just putz around and do whatever I wanted to do.
BTW if Archie wants to look out for his son then so be it. If I was San Diego I would draft offensive linemen and trade off some dead weight to have as many first through third round picks as possible.

There again though how can one player without a decent supporting cast turn a team around? San Diego needs to work on the O-Line and D-Line to get some building blocks. But that is always one of the last areas to build within the pros.

"Un-sexy" or not Gallery is the guy to pick if you have the number one slot in the draft. Throw out Williams because he isn't eligible for the draft now and most likely will not be eligible this weekend.

"In fact, as of late Thursday, the Giants had not phoned the Chargers. Said one New York source: "Whatever long-distance carrier we've got better not plan on getting rich off this thing." Giants officials speculated that San Diego executives would call on Friday, but that was simply supposition. There is a good chance the Giants will wait until Saturday, when San Diego is on the clock, and see how the Chargers feel then about choosing a player who has hinted that he could sit out the 2004 season and re-enter the draft in 2005."

I agree, even if Manning wanted to go to the Chargers, I've been advocating Gallery since before the Combine (although then I thought we might be able to trade down and get him, and that both Manning and Rothlesburger would go in the top 4).
As for Willliams... Opps, I meant Fitzgerald. I can't keep track of all the Wideouts in this Draft. I think that Mike Williams is a bit overrated, but there's always Roy Williams who could go in the top 5, and lets not forget Reggie Williams (oi, I had to go look that up, just to get my Williams's straight ).
This has been a very fun pre-draft off season, I'm not looking forward to the pre-camp lull.
