Kerry Says His 'Family' Owns SUV, Not He
Friday April 23, 2004 12:46 AM
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Does John Kerry, who supports higher automobile fuel economy standards, own a gas-guzzling SUV? He does, but says it belongs to the family, not to him.
During a conference call Thursday with reporters to discuss his upcoming jobs tour through West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan, the Democratic presidential candidate was asked whether he owned a Chevrolet Suburban.
``I don't own an SUV,'' said Kerry, who supports increasing existing fuel economy standards to 36 miles per gallon by 2015 in order to reduce the nation's dependence on foreign oil supplies.
Kerry also has made rising gasoline prices an issue in the campaign against President Bush. In Houston on Thursday, Kerry said the president broke a 2000 campaign pledge to ``jawbone'' oil-producing nations by pressuring them to increase their output.
Kerry thought for a second when asked whether his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, had a Suburban at their Ketchum, Idaho, home. Kerry said he owns and drives a Dodge 600 and recently bought a Chrysler 300M. He said his wife owns the Chevrolet SUV.
``The family has it. I don't have it,'' he said.
Kerry said it's important for his family to buy American cars and pledged to keep car manufacturing jobs in the country if elected. He said he is interested in a hybrid car, and has talked to Ford about making it the ``campaign car.''
``We're going to keep jobs in America and help the industry be more competitive with foreign manufacturers that are building those cars today,'' Kerry said.
The Massachusetts senator said he'll release more details during the jobs tour about his plans to keep jobs in the country.
``I want cars to be made in Michigan, made in America, made'' by the United Auto Workers, Kerry said.
__Your running for President of the US...You stand up for more fuel efficient cars...your wife owns an SUV...
If your looking to change the country, maybe you should start in your own house, Mr. Kerry.
John "Do as I say, not as I do" Kerry.
-
John "Do as I say, not as I do" Kerry.
And even if true - how exacly is it different from our standing president ?
-
Cause the standing president is not an anti SUV lefty.
-
I don't think Bush has been on both sides of this ;) It's getting to be that every time Kerry opens his mouth he makes a hypocrite of himself. Sad that this is the best the Dems could do.
-
If he was really concerned, he would be driving a diesel SUV and burning biodiesel.
-
Is he his wifes lord and master? If his wife wants an suv she is going to buy an SUV. Does anyone here have experiance with women?

Kerry is obviously placing himself above his family. How can I support a candidate who doesn't support his family?
Bush sucks. Who else is running?

If his wife does not take him seriously, why should I?
-
As the prime breadwinner for his family (at least we think so) then whatever the family owns, he owns.
Therefore, he owns the SUV, and is a damned hypocrite.
-
The Kerry Family owns an SUV.
The Bush Family owns an SUV.
The Swartzenegger family owns a fleet of Hummers.
-
Well that was just a stupid remark. He should have just said "hell yes! And I could have bought 20 of the suckers, but I didn't"

You know what, MT...
A straight answer like that would get my vote.
I'm so sick of "Political" answers.
Ever consider a run for office?

Lol, how droll. It's not that his wife drives an SUV. It's that he somehow seems to think that since his wife "owns" it, he is somehow not associated w/ it, even though he has driven it and ridden in it.
Cmon, are you married? If your wife drove an SUV and someone asked if you own an SUV would you really say "No, but my wife does" ?
I'm willing to be you'd say, "Ya, we own an SUV."

Please, find me a quote from the Bushes or the Schwartzneggers where the head of the household tries to blame the ownership of the gas-guzzler on the 'family'.
Politics is about posturing, to a large extent.
This was a poor bit of posturing.

He is NOT the prime breadwinner of his family. His wife is the heir to the Heinz fortune as she is the widow of Senator Heinz who was killed in a plane crash. She is worth in excess of 500 million dollars.
Kerry's previous wife whom he divorced after she had a nervous breakdown, was worth between 200 and 300 million dollars. A lot of which it is said he took when he left.
He was not the prime breadwinner there either it seems.
I have no issue with Kerry or his family owning an SUV, since I drive a crew cab dually with a 454.
I have an issue with the fact Kerry lacks the spine to stand for any position at any time for any length of time. He only stands for that which is most advantageous for John Kerry, no matter the cost for anyone else.
That is only one small issue I have with Kerry, but the basis for any number of issues I have with him.
-
I have no problem with anyone driving an suv. I have a problem with them driving one and telling everyone else no too..
sorta like the people who tell you that you don't need or can't have firearms but surround themselves with armed guards with concealed weapons. kerry and rosie... pretty much the same thing.

Not only does Kerry own an SUV, he also owns 5 mansions, a huge power yatch and a 50 million dollar gulfstream 5 jet.
He is such a hypocrite it isn't even funny.

"Being responsible about the environment is not some goo-goo, do-gooder, silly notion that you embrace once a year on Earth Day," railed Kerry to a Florida crowd. "It's important to life itself."

I guess the man needs to live in a mud hut with Hilliary pulling his used rickshaw to be legit.

No, he needs to hold himself to the same standards as he holds everyone else. He needs to stop telling everyone how well he empathizes with people who live on $20K a year (kinda like slick willie biting his lip and whimpering "I feel your pain"). He needs most of all to come clean about his past, and take a stand on issues and have the guts to stick with it. Oh, and if he'd develop a platform that amounts to something other than "I'm not George W. Bush, everyone hates George W. Bush, George W. Bush is an idiot, and George W. Bush is a liar".

That sounds like a fine idea :)

Think Bush is far too short sighted to make any sort of connections with SUV's deforrestation and global warming.
Wasn't he asked by a reporter in the future what historians in the future may think of his decision to invade Iraq. His reply was what does it matter we'll all be dead.
Hardly the response one would respect from a president.

Global warming is a crock of Bravo Sierra. Why is it people can't seem to inderstand that the earth has been warming and cooling in cycles since before man walked the face of the planet? Since the end of the Ice Age, the earth has been on a warming trend, man had nothing to do with it. It will continue to do so, regardless of man's efforts one way or the other.
Regarding SUV's, they are no more a threat to the environment than my dog. However, were we smart, we'd convert everything but transportation to electricity, and convert all electricity production to nuclear power. Then we could use oil and coal for fuel to power transportation only (as in coal gassification), and use synthetics (pure synthetics) for lubrication.
Trees grow back. Deforrestation is a matter of policy, and can be dealt with. Much of the outcry is much ado about nothing, b ut there are legitimate complaints.
Regarding history and the invasion of Iraq, the question was incredibly stupid and facetious. Nothing less than I'd expect from what now passes for "reporters" and "journalists". Bush's point was that he was doing what had to be done, whether it was popular or not.
-
I owned an SUV before I sold it to my family so I could say I didn't own an SUV...
or
I voted for the 87 billion before my family voted against it...
What a crock of watermelon this guy is...

Silly Dem. Anyone remember another silly dem's anwser to a hot question?
Mike Dukakis, when asked by Bernard Shaw (during the debates with Bush 41) how would he feel about capital punishment if his wife Kitty were raped and murdered? anyone recall his response? what a blatantly foolish answer. but in lockstep with his lying duplicitous party line. why Bernard, as much as I love Kitty it would be cool with me if some poor underpriviledged type raped and murdered her. after all only guns kill. people never do. least of all in Massachusetts. *willie horton slinks away grinning*
the logic of why anyone over the age of 30 years is still a dem escapes me.
Wtg John Kerry, someone ought to explain to this "leader" the concept of stop digging.
God save us from the Democrats.
-
women remain democrats long past 30 as do people who feel that they can't make it on their own or that at any time they will be struck homeless like it were a virus... they feel they need a large "caring" government as a safety net. They are like the peple who would pay $1000 a month for dental insurance even tho they have perfect teeth now.
people who are getting something for nothing or getting something that used to belong to someone else also need to protect this and vote democrat.
men with high levels of estrogen or who are academics that have never lived in the real world vote democrat.
men who have seen war and have been damaged by it vote democrat many times.
mostly kids, women, teachers, union members who read the crap sent to them by their union and minorities tho.
Nobody you would want to hang out with much.

LOL .. Steve ... doesn't this logic remind you of a guy that said ...
Yes .. I tried pot ... but I DIDN'T inhale ...
or
She was performing oral sex on me, therefore she was having sex ... not me.
Seem to be a common thread in the overall logic of Dems.

Also, Lazs, you forget the people who are born into wealth and spend their lives feeling guilty about it..they vote democrat...but hold onto their money at the same time.
-
yep... I did forget that group but I allways wondered why they don't just send extra in on their income taxes.. you can do that you know.
basic rule is... if it is someone yu wouldn't like to hang out with then they probly vote democrat.

Well I don't know about that last statement Lasz. It seems to me that Ravs would probably be a liberal. I think I would enjoy a few rounds at the sports bar with him just the same. A great friend of mine is a world class chef, (cooked for Madonna, The BeeGees, Clapton etc. when they are in town) world class Jew, and a world class liberal and when we get together if we leave politics out we get along famously. once we start talking politics I wanna fuggin kill him and he wants to world peace me. what a nice tard.
-
I stand by what I said storch... If I hang out with a liberal It usually doesn't take long to get them to stop acting womanly about the whole thing... if not... we probly won't get along.
