Post by: leonid on October 06, 1999, 04:53:00 AM
If this is my Croatian friend, then let me congratulate you on your fine flying of the messer.  Didn't I tell you that you were one of the best?  Look at your score!  Bozhe moi!

Of course, if this isn't my fine friend, then please ignore  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Leonid, if you don't mind, what does Horosho mean?  I listen to a lot of Russian speakers (long story) and I hear that word a lot.

Well from my experience, if you hear a specific word in a foreign language over and over when native speakers of that language talk, it's a swear word.

Anyone ever been to Greece? The most popular word there is "malaka" and I think we all know what that means.

So my guess is that Horosho signifies something dirty!  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Funked,
'horosho' means 'good', in Russian.  'Ochin' means 'very'.  Thus, 'very good'  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Sascha,
Sorry to disappoint you  ;b   BTW, 'Sascha' (or 'Sasha' in Russian) is a Russian nickname for Aleksandr, or Alexander.

LOL Sascha I know what malaka means and yeah they use it a lot.

I had a Greek friend in college and he would talk with his friends in Greece over the telephone.  You'd hear "blah blah blah malaka blah blah malaka" and we asked him what it meant, then we called him a malaka all the time.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

BTW He beat 3 of us at Scrabble one time, including two lawyers ROFL!

He, he...sounds *exactly* like what happened when I had my first contact with the greek language.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

It seems to be *THE* most important word if you travel down there. A friend of mine in Greece talked me through all the ways that they use the word in. I really admire this word for its versatility, there's actually just one word that beats "malaka" in that respect: It's an english word and it starts with an "F".  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

hehehehe, having used that word (malaka) on countless occasions I'll give a bit of history hehehehe.

It's actually comes from the verb malakia (the act of maturbating) so malaka best translates as "one who maturbates" the implication being that of a person who has nothing better to do all day than to masterbate. English use the words idiot, jerk-off, dog f*ing, etc etc in it's place.

It's actually quite a soft swear word in Greek compared to their religious swears attached with verbs of the sexual nature. These are quite common in European Countries, France first comes to mind as having some very imaginative ones  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Man this is getting educational.  Learned something new today, in another language no less.

I always thought malaka was a type of burrito.

Hristo, what does
" Spasibo i dosvidanya ! "
mean? a salutation or goodbye of some sort?

ArcTangent,

Sorry to answer for Hristo, but 'Spacibo i dosvidanya' is Russian for 'Thank you and goodbye'  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

ATAN:  ROFL!

Machaca is the word you are thinking of.

I like Barbacoa or Al Pastor better though.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Oz: I can't read that.

I must assume it is in the third person, though!   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

When doing some research the other day about the library in Alexandria I discovered that Ozymandias was the Gk name for RamsesII.  I never knew that... I remember the poem about Oz. the KoK's decaying statue, having read it as a child, but I never knew until now to whom it was referring.

Nice to see he is alive and well Alpha testing flight sims.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Cheers,

Ah yes, Greek Historians...did they ever get anything right?  And that's Ramesses the Great, mind you.  But the Greeks seemed to have this annoying habit of changing just about everything in the retelling, one of the reasons nobody can find Atlantis -- well, except for a few of us.  One of the things oz always found amusing about the Romans -- "wow, you Greeks have great Gods and Goddesses, we think we'll steal them.  But we'll have to change a few minor things, I mean the names positively suck!"  Oz had given up the King of King business at one point, but as anyone can see, he's back in action and going strong now.  The statue bit was just a cover.  It's so much easier to go out in public when people can't really be sure yer the KoK.  "Is that?...no, couldn't be..."  Cut's down on the mobbing and mindless sycophancy -- sure it's nice sometimes, but a real drag in the ordinary course of affairs.

Hmm...Alexander the Great.  Now he had some ego.  "Well, here I am, let's found a city.  We'll call it....Alexandria, nice ring don't you think?"  100 miles down the river/desert track/jungle path..."Well, here I am, let's found a city.  We'll call it....Alexandria, nice ring don't you think?"  Soon, there were little Alexandria's all over Africa, Asia Minor, and India.  Ozwonders if they had little numbers after their names, or you might find one with a sign outside "Alexandria, Pop 3000 -- We were first, dammit!".  Chambers of Commerce would set up sister cities with other Alexandrias.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

And now that you mention it, oz DID completely munge 1st/3rd person, except for backwards from the usual way.  Oops.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
