Title: Lazs gun Q
Post by: moot on April 26, 2004, 05:09:47 AM
Hey Lazs, you own a bunch of them, right?
Do you have a 1777-style rifle or something like it, for ex. one of those anti-elephant hunting rifles?

While we're at it, what do you think of the Steyr Scout Rifle .308 (with the forward mounted scout scope)?

Thanks.

Don't make jokes about that Curval. Just imagine you come home from work and find an elephant sneaking into your house...

You better have one of those, for your safety.

It's elephant season!!

are you talking a bout an old nitro express double?  No, I don't have one of them.

We have had elephants in dixon but they seemed pretty well behaved to me.    Much better than the section 8 zombie or the crank zombies.   I think a double is too much gun with too little firepower for the zombies tho.   They might work pretty well on cars tho but so would a 10 guage with slugs.

Also.. those guns are pretty rare and expensive... out of my league for simply collecting.

I don't think I have "a bunch" of guns.. I have maybe a dozen.   Mostly handguns.  some historical stuff.

oh... most ex's are thin skinned animals (if yours isn't then you need advice from someone other than me)...   You should be able to put her down with much less gun regardless of weight.

Hey, Lazs, in case you missed my question: what do you think of the Steyr Scout Rifle .308 (with the forward mounted scout scope)?

I don't know much about rifles.  I like the 308 tho but am still into old ought six's like Garrands.   I am a pretty crappy rifle shot.  I can't imagine a rifle made by steyr that isn't top notch.

many on this board know a lot more about rifles than I tho.

I've shot several of Jeff Cooper's "scout" style rifles.  I like them.  They are very fast to the shoulder.  My dad had Lee Enfield sporter with set up on the scout system.  I don't think they would be as effective of a target rifle as the regular system, but for snap shooting they might be faster to use.  Especially if you practice with it.

And I do have an "elephant" rifle.  I've got a Winchester M70 in .416 Remington Mag.  I shoot 350grn Barnes X-bullets at around 2400 fps.

Dune, are there lots of elephants in Arizona?

I'm guessing "elephants" is a code word for some sort of Semoan gang that is terrorising the United Sates.

Alternatively it could be a codeword for "refridgerator"...you know, the ones that polluting gun enthusiasts illegally dump and then shoot up.

Not sure...hmmm

;)

There are elephants in Arizona, although I bet the zoo officials would be mighty peeved if I dropped one   :p

Actually, it's just a really big rifle.  For hunting in N. America, you really don't need more than a .338 Win Mag/.340 Weatherby Mag or something in that neighborhood.  However, many people carry more when hunting bigger Alaskan brown bears/grizzlys.  I hope to make it to Alaska for a hunt.  And a dream would be to make it to Africa and hunt there.  Many nations in Africa will not let you hunt one of the Big 5 (elephant, rhino, cape buffalo, lion, leapard) with a gun smaller than a .375.  So you would have to have something big for that.

Until then, I'll take it elk hunting   :)

One of those long classic rifles is what I meant. A friend had one hung on his wall, looked almost a meter and a half long.
I only remember it was labeled "Kentuckian".
Thought you might have some fun anecdotes about it or other long rifles.

Sounds like your talking about a "Kentucky Rifle" which is a muzzle loading musket.
