Title: A letter from Iraq...
Post by: humble on April 26, 2004, 12:26:10 PM
Givin the renewed fighting in and around Fallujah I thought this might be of interest to a few of you, it was forwared to me via a close friend of the family...

I am currently serving with the CPA in Baghdad, contributing far less than
the 2/4 Marines.  Rather than write of my own modest contribution, I thought
it best just to relay home a note that was written to the 2/4 Marines
families.

Subject: Update from Lt Col Kennedy

"Dear Ladies, the last two days have been the hardest two days this
battalion has faced in over 30 years. Within the blink of an eye the
situation went form relatively calm to a raging storm. You've known that
since arriving there has been violence; attacks have been sporadic and
mostly limited to roadside bombs. Your husbands have become experts at
recognizing those threats and neutralizing them before we are injured. Up to
this point the war has been the purview of corporals and sergeants, and the
squad they lead.

Yesterday the enemy upped the ante.

Early in the morning we exchanged gunfire with a group of insurgents without
significant loss. As morning progressed, the enemy fed more men into the
fight and we responded with stronger force. Unfortunately, this led to
injuries as our Marines and sailors started clearing the city block by
block. The enemy did not run; they fought us like soldiers And we destroyed
the enemy like only Marines can. By the end of the evening the local
hospital was so full of their dead and wounded that they ran out of space to
put them. Your husbands were awesome all night they stayed at the job of
securing the streets and nobody challenged them as the hours wore on. They
did not surrender an inch nor did flinch from the next potential threat.
Previous to yesterday the terrorist thought that we were soft enough to
challenge. As of tonight the message is loud and clear that the Marines will
not be beaten.

Today the enemy started all over again, although with far fewer numbers,
only now the rest of the battalion joined the fight. Without elaborating too
much, Weapons Company and Golf Company crushed their attackers with the
vengeance of the righteous. They filled up the hospitals again and we
suffered only a few injuries. Echo Company dominated the previous day's
battlefield. Fox Company patrolled with confidence and authority; nobody
challenged them. Even Headquarters Company manned their stations and counted
far fewer people openly watching us with disdain. If the enemy is foolish
enough to try to take your men again they will not survive contact. We are
here to win.

The news looks grim from back in the States. We did take losses that, in our
hearts, we will always live with. The men we lost were taken within the very
opening minutes of the violence. They could not have foreseen the treachery
of the enemy and they did not suffer. We can never replace these Marines and
Sailors but they will fight on with us in spirit. We are not feeling sorry
for ourselves nor do we fear what tomorrow will bring. The battalion has
lived up to its reputation as The Magnificent Bastards.

Yesterday made everyone here stronger and wiser; it will be a cold day in
Hell before we are taken for granted again."

I advice you all to re-read "Brave Soldier Shweik" by Yaroslaw Gashek. Nothing have changed since WWI.

to the Soldiers there. Nothing have changed and they die for real.

Title: PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN
Post by: 1wingnutone on April 26, 2004, 02:20:25 PM
I can`t thank our brave and dedicated men and women of the Armed services enough for their willingness to stand and fight and their courage  to do what needs to be done to make this a better world for all to live in.
I am completly disgusted with countries like Spain that in the face of danger they turned tail and ran.Their spineless behaviour will be recorded in history.
I personally feel a terrible sense of guilt every time I sleep in my warm safe bed or complain about some minor inconvience while our soldiers put their lives on the line everyday.
I`m almost 45 and this war has made me realize that I have never done anything to deserve to live in and enjoy the freedoms that  I have  taken for granted.
If I thought I would be accepted and could endure the training required.I`d be honored to stand and fight with and die if it came to it. At least then I could say my life hasn`t been a total waste, which I know not many would admit to.

I used to know a bunch of guys in 2-4.  I doubt they are still in the btl. but I'm sure they are in country.

It does make this former jarhead very proud to have earned the title.  This goes to the heart of why Marines are proud to earn their title.  Not that the army isnt kicking bellybutton over there either I'm just kinda partial.

I got news the other day that a guy I knew was killed in Iraq last week.  Didnt get any details and I wouldnt say I knew him well enough to be a friend but it still hurts.

Sorry, I made too many mistakes transliterating the title and name from Cyrillic. It is "The Good Soldier Svejk and His Fortunes in the World War" by Jaroslav Hasek.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0140182748/ref=sib_rdr_dp/104-9123309-9675124?%5Fencoding=UTF8&no=283155&me=ATVPDKIKX0DER&st=books

I find the "letters" like the one posted above amazing in their beauty. Exactly like K. & K. propaganda from Hasek's book. Same reports from Serbia 1915, Ukraine 1942 and now Iraq 2004. I will not be surprised if American soldiers use propaganda leaflets like that properly, especially if the paper is soft enough.

I love stability in some things.

Hehe, studying this book at school must be much more fun then "War and Peace" ;) BTW, when I was in the US in 1989 I was surprised to know that they study "Catch-22" at school.

I love Hasek's stories about his experience in Russia as a Red Army officer during Civil War. Sometimes it's even more funny then Svejk's adventures. I wonder how Soviet press dared to call him a Communist :)

I have seen some screenshots from Czech animation film about Svejk, puppet animation, based on Josef Lada's illustrations. Was there another film with real actors? Anyway I'll try to look for "Svejk" in Edonkey :)
