Post by: rogerdee on April 27, 2004, 11:07:27 AM
Hi guys  I am going to get  a new video card  as my onboard one  leaves a little to be desired  and won't work with  AH2  any way. got 256 mb memeory 1.3 amd procceser  .
was wondering what would be best   to get  bearing in mind  my pockets are not that deep  and in the uk  things  are priced stupidly
Also  need to be easy to fit and set up

rogerdee, try looking at Scan Computers (http://www.scan.co.uk/) - they have very competitive prices on good quality products, and an excellent mail order service.   ;)

LOL, sorry meant to say..... I have the NVIDIA GeForce FX 5900XT which works great in AH2, but I think that was £149 - though Scan may have it cheaper.  I couldn't really tell you about any other cards, sorry.  Hopefully someone else more knowledgeable can.  ;)

Check out the relative performance of the current generation of cards here:Tom's Hardware (http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/20031229/index.html)
With the next generation coming out in May, prices on current cards may drop.
I recommend the ATi 9600 Pro (most bang for the buck) for your computer.  This card will work well if you later decide to upgrade your mobo and memory. Your CPU is going to bottleneck anything faster.  Whatever you do avoid cards designated SE by ATi or MX by nVidia.

scan is a horrible shop!

overclockers graphic card range is 2nd to none.......

oh, and dont buy a Nvidia card...they are slower and have less image quality than there equal priced ATI cards.......

if you want to spend a lil more cash, someone posted a link for a Radeon 9800 under 200 I think.

I'm using a Radeon 9600XT, works great for me.

The cheapest price in the states for a 9800 Pro, per PriceGrabber, is $198 for the 128MB OEM card.  The 9600 Pro is priced at $159 and strangely one vendor has the 9600 XT for $159 as well (most are around $170.  You'd be better off to spend $160 on the card and $55 more for 256MB more memory.
