Was looking over some info, videos, and screenshots of IL2 and it kinda perked my interest. I was just wondering if its any good?
-
Single player, or online?
-
Yes eye candy is great.
but online is limited to 32 players at a time.
-
Il-2 or later Il-2:Forgotten Battles?
First one is old already (thought still good looking) so Il-2:FB is the one you want to buy.
-
Hey Beef, it's got nothing on Xplane.
-
FB/AEP is more then worth it. Buy IL2: Forgotten Battles Gold Pack it has everything you need. Search prices vary depending where you look.
-
it compliments AH well - what one can't give you, the other does
-
Gold Pack like Bat said.
Find a LAN group when the visual shock wears off. Then ask Pongo about the J8A Gladiator.
-
But does it have blade element theory?
-
Yes.
And blood.

Reading this thread pushed me over the brink -- finally bought Gold Pack (IL-2 plus Forgotten Battles plus Expansion Pack). After only a day or two with it, have to agree it is really great. Good companion to Aces High.
ILFBEP has gorgeous exterior views, precise wide ranging interior views among the most realistic anywhere, stunning graphics, tough gunnery (complete with streams of shells behind guns as they are fired), and optional big doses of realistic settings.
However, haven't gotten on line yet with Gold Pack because of some sort of incompatibility with my server. And it seems to exit clumsily, sometimes requiring a reboot.
Will take me awhile to become moderately competitive with Gold Pack. Especially without icons and supplemented with exterior views, Gold Pack is extremely immersive and challenging.
IL-2 Forgotten Battles Gold Pack joins the immortal basically offline sims like Yeager, Falcon, Jane's USNF '97, and Jane's USAF.

I didn't like it.
-
After the balloon comes the needle.

Seeing as how this post is almost two months old, I'll presume you haven't bought it yet Beefcake.
If you are still around and see this post, what questions about the game do you have? As in how good is the eye candy, or how good is the simulation aspect? There is no question about the support, that is excellent.

You have Il-2 Lan parties?
Man I miss those days, when I worked at the local ISP we'd get 15+ on the net together and fly AH. Like a mini con each time.

My $0.02 AUD
If you like world war two combat aircraft at all, IL2:FB AEP is a must have.
Graphically outstanding, pretty good flight and damage modelling, amazing array of flyable aircraft, plus heaps more non flyable AI types.
Big maps with lots of objects, or little maps with virtually no objects...the choice is yours.
The Quick Mission Builder is great for whacking up a quick fight, the Full Mission Builder is pretty good too, though a little daunting at first.
There are some excellant third party tools that you can download for free that make making a mission an absolute breeze........UberDaemons Uber Quick Mission Builder for example, is really good for quickly making quite complex missions.
Online experience will vary depending on where you fly, that is, which server, not what terrain.
I tend to mostly play co-op missions with a small group of guys I have flown online with for years, and enjoy the heck out of it.
The dogfight servers can tend to have a bit of whingery though.
Setting up your own multiplay game for yourself and a couple of mates to enjoy is really simple too.
All in all, I would highly reccomend IL2:FB as a great fun game where you will get to fly a lot of types that have never been flyable in any other game.
As I say...if you like WWII aircraft, do yourself a favour and grab a copy, you wont regret it.

Every week Sunking.
Like BF1942 with the DC MOD, it's as fun as AH is online, but in BF, you need to go COOP so there is a rash of AI. They might not be the best base capture computer AI, but it makes for great fun.
Set it up. People crowd bars on Saturday night, just crowd a friends basement, and try it.
But bring headphones.
Think it is too hard to do?
Search Newegg for a Lan-boy case. It comes with a strap and is light and portable with a good power supply.

Sounds great. Only problem is getting the players together and everyone agreeing on an evening.

In COOP BF1942 or Gladiators in IL-2, 2 guys work.
4 is a riot I confess.
Still, if you can get 4 guys together, LAN is the deal in both. Hard, but id try... even 2 is really fun.
Im back into loving AH1. Fly it till it is gone. It's pretty great.
-
New patch out tonight. Fixes .50 dispersion, among many others things.
IL-2 is a programing marvel and it belongs in any flight simmers collection.
-
I'm looking to buy IL2 very soon. I would have bought it earlier, but it is not mass play. I guess I can deal with 32 online play:p Plus the eye candy is astounding.
-
Get used to "Outside" view.
-
Yah graphics seem mind boggling. I've seen alota videos from IL2, and it puts AH2 in the dust. Well, from what screen shots I've looked at anyway. IL2 must be less furball oriented with 32 online play. How is gameplay?
-
Off line it's nearly as good as online - was playing a offline mission from BOE expansion - Normandy landings trying to hit B17's escorted by P51's
Got bounced by 2 p51's - managed to tag one at extreme range with 30mm - 450 meters, major flash on his wing root and he sort of staggered in the air and lost speed, caught him and set him on fire with 13mm at 100 meters.
His buddy then started to B&Z - G6 couldn't catch him and he kept climbing away.....then his engine started to overheat and got in range, hit a wingtip with 30mm and took it off......ran out of ammo and ran for home - he did as well flying one wing low....
Absolutely awesome game ai - I find I view every flight on film.
Took me a long time to get my stick and tracker set up - high end video card is a must.
