Title: French Beer
Post by: storch on April 27, 2004, 11:12:07 PM
Tonight in the CT the subject of French beer was brought up.  One person wanted to know if the french actually brewed beer.

I recall a fairly strong ale called St. Amand which really "hit" it was in a quart bottle (more or less).  I also recall a type of pilsner beer which was very fine.  I have forgotten the brand of the second beer.  both of these I drank in the south on the Cote d'azur (ville franche).

How many different beers are brewed in france?

Strafo will sure answer your question.

But, honestly, even if we brew some nice beer, belgium is the king of tasty beers !

2nd that they do some great beers. Got plastered on one called Duvel or something about 7% proof think Duvel means Devil and rightly named.

What's the average alcohol volume of US beer? Some kiwi mates were in the US drinking watched their US mates get drunk while the Kiwi's were deciding who was going to drive.

Duvel is Belgian, 8.5%. Too strong for me. I don't like beers to be much above 5%, so that I can drink plenty!

Mora - agreed, that Kronenbourg is not the best one. The better one is 1664 - Seize cents soixante quatre - try saying that after you've had about five of them and your first language is not French!

Another French beer - Stella Artois.

Hey Storch, I had an apartment down by Côte d'Azur - Antibes. Great area. Where did you stay?

Stella Artois is another belgian beer!!!

5 demerits for you.

The irony is that I don't like beer much... I prefer a good french red wine...go figure!

When UK use to drink alot of german beer as well. 2 partciular favourites. Sorry not sure on spelling where. Adventinus and Schniderwiess great beers that came in massive bottles.  :D

You can by Duvel here in NZ for any Kiwi's reading, just have to ask any liquor store to get it in. Not cheap though, but worth it. Great drop.

USS Bigelow (DD942)  I had a great ocean view.  and no we didn't watermelon in the bay.  Yes I really liked southern France.  I don't remember seeing many automobiles and the streets running up from the seaside were stepped.  The older Frenchmen wore berets and when you passed them they tipped and greeted you bonjour/bon soir.  on my second trip ashore I wore a ballcap so I could tip my hat also.  very nice.  the food was outta this world.  I ate mostly seafood dishes.  wish I could remember the names but one was an octopus dish, I really liked octopus.  We were there for about one week.  German beer is king IMHO.

1977 Straffo, some of the older men only.  very quaint and very polite people.  My father still wears a beret on cold days (about three per year here).

ok Storch , I thought you were speaking of the usual cliché of the proud Frenchman wearing a béret and having a baguette under his arm :p

Actually, I think we still have some (mummified) to attract the tourists :D

Lapin Kulta is one of the worst beers we have. It's good if you just take a sip, but after drinking half a bottle it tastes like it was opened hours ago. If you collect empty bottles after a party the Lapin Kulta bottles are allways half empty..

Anyone able to point me towards a good US beer I can try.

I don't really drink American beers, were you drinking that Bud ice cold?  If I were forced to drink only American beer I guess it would have to be Samuel Adams.  I mostly drink Beck's, Corona, Dos XX or Antartica when I can find it.  A friend sent me some Carling in a can that when you opened it the can sucked air into itself so when you poured it, it had a nice head on it.  novel but not much of a beer.

One of the better beers I've tried is called Boddingtons, I've never really drank anything quite like it. Its real smooth and has a very good taste.

If you've never tried it, I'd suggest buying a 4 pack, cool them, put em open and pour away into a pint glass. No special method pouring, but the "creamier" it looks the better it'll taste.

That was mule piss that he said, and ya all mass produced north american beer (bud, labatt, molson, miller, etc) is mule piss. You have to go with the micro breweries, or buy imported beer.

IMHO Lapin Gold is too "watery". Thin. But I admit that I could get such an expression because of a bad mood or something. Usually I drink something that is over 6% alcohol. Ony Western "strong" brands that I tasted were Super Skol (great one!), Amsterdam (quite a poisonous stuff, canned headache) and Eku 28 (too sweet).  Oh, forgot Miller Magnum, strange taste but nice sometimes. We don't have many foreign beers here after 1998.

Panther piss is less offensive and friendlier than donkey piss.  so therefore panther piss it is.  I'll have to look but IIRC the American beers state that it is 6% by volume on their labelling. so much for truth in advertising.

Concerning bier I'm biased :)

Real bier (IMO ;)) can be produced only in five places (all in Belgium)  by Cistercian monk and should be named :
Chimay, Orval, Westmalle or Rochefort.

The Rochefort  is the finest and the only brewage that can pretent competiting with wine :p

@Storch : I'll still say donkey piss (or pisse d'ane) because it's perhaps more offensive but also more descriptif IMO :)

You'll never dare to nuke France because the french cheese fallouts will be much worse than all the hidden WMDs from Iraq, Syria, Canada and Kalifornia.

I asked a friend who is french, (we call him frenchie) one day while drinking, "hey frenchie what good thing ever came out of france"?  without missing a beat he said after WWII when all you Americans left, that was the only good thing that ever came out of france.  I like that frenchie he is very intelligent. :)  of course he is better at making fun of us Americans than most of you but he is funny and not mean.
