Title: Lt Hampton Gray's Corsair
Post by: Greebo on April 28, 2004, 12:36:14 PM
I've just uploaded my latest skin to AH Skins (http://www.ah-skins.com/index.php). This is a Corsair Mk IV (F4U-1D) of the Canadian pilot Lt Robert Hampton Gray.

In 1945 Lt Hampton Gray was serving in the Pacific as senior pilot in 1841 Squadron FAA, flying from HMS Formidable. Having already won the DSC for sinking a Japanese destroyer he attempted to repeat the feat on August 9th while leading a low level attack on Onagawa bay. On his bomb run he was hit by fire from several ships, which knocked one of his 1000lb bombs off and set his plane on fire. Despite this he continued his run, dropping to 50 feet before releasing his other bomb. This struck the destroyer Amakusa, which then quickly sank. Shortly after, his Corsair was seen to  hit the sea, killing its pilot. Fot this act of heroism Lt Hampton Gray was awarded the Victoria Cross.

A full biography can be found here (http://www.navalmuseum.ab.ca/gray.html).

I actually had the "115" on the wheel covers at first, but then saw several paintings which showed Gray's Corsair without them. There are also some photos of camouflaged FAA Corsairs without numbers there, so I decided on balance it was more accurate to delete them.
