And here (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=514&e=5&u=/ap/20040429/ap_on_re_eu/italy_iraq_hostages) is proof.
They're showing the terrorists how Italians capitulate.

Would like to see you in the same position... Being able to save the lifes of your children and doing nothing...
Hard to take sides on this one...

This is so bloody silly. Its not the italian people which are demonstrating, its those guys like u which satisfy the expectations of the terrotists.

The 3 that are being held are/were security guards taking a calculated risk that didn't pan out. If I were being held, I would hope my family would be stronger and not give the bastages what they want.
Remember Todd Beemer of Flight 93! Never surrender!
-
The demonstration was promoted by the families of the three hostages.
Only "peace" flags have been waved during the demonstration.
No political slogan, no political flag, nothing against italian or USA Army.
Is this disturbing you armchair generals or warboys?
-
I find it disturbing that terrorists would demand a peace demonstration or else they would kill their hostages.
-
I think that's just sad.

wow...you have really grown a pair gofaster...i envy your bravery :rofl

Well I'm with gofaster too. I'd hope my family wouldn't do it.
That's not to say I don't sympathize with those families, and it aint even to say that I wouldn't consider doing it myself if it meant saving, say, my brother's life.
But it's ridiculous. The fact that these folks are demonstrating for the only reason that terrorists are forcing them to is a really pathetic spectacle.
Tough one...
-
The terrorists demanded a demonstration against the italian and US governments. A demonstration to obtain the retirement of italian army from Iraq.
Actually, those families and ppl are asking for peace and the release of the hostages. Among them there were even leftist politicians but not even a word has been said against the troops or governments.
I can understand there is a *subtle* difference between demonstrating for peace/sons and for terrorism. But indeed there is. And it is very important. I'm sure you can understand it. Hmmm, can you ... ? Wait, yes, maybe understanding differences is difficult.
For example, there are differences between fighting communism and:
- supporting the butcher fascist Pinochet,
- supporting other central/south american dictatorships,
- supporting the young Saddam Hussein,
- supporting the young Bin Laden,
- supporting the bloody Saudi Arabia,
- supporting and financing thousands of bloody covert ops in South America and South east Asia.
- ......
For example, there are contraddictions between being the mighty defender of world's liberty and:
- support Putin in Cecenia slaughter,
- close both eyes in front of Kurds slaughter,
- blindly support and finance Israel in his colonial policy,
- ......
"Same old Europe" understands these subtle differences and apparent contraddictions and still supports USA. Can you please understand us? Please ...

The fact that leftist (im assuming opposition parties) politicans took part obviously makes it a political event.
However it's a tough spot for the families.

Quite the opposite Grun,
It could have been very easy to make it a political event, very easy.
Instead, it was only a demonstration full of peace flags, ended in front of the Vatican with thousands ppl praying for the hostages, the italian dead and their families. No one, even no one leftist asked for the army retirement from Iraq.
Amazing eh? Thinking free people demonstrating for peace and life .... weird.

It seems that across the ocean "someone" is always in the search of motivation to bash.......European preferably.
Well we have to live together with this.....
This time though the argument is very poor..... sad.....ridiculous.
Sitting in your armchair you scan every new and when finally you find "The new", you start your junkwriting drooling for satisfaction;not knowing the facts at all, you judge......
you state "if I was in that situation"..... "If my families",while your sons are playing in the garden, and your family is maybe on vacation.
... you indulge in witing verdict like "Italians capitulate" (is this your lifetime conviction??) .
If this is your contribution to fight terrorism this is the REAL capitulation
Addendum: sorry if I let me drag; my consideration are clearly directed only to some persons writing here, not a generalization
