I can't see how he thought the Afghanistan War was needless. Afghanistan is the safe-haven of the terrorist that attacked the U.S. on many occassions (First WTC bombings, U.S.S Cole, 9-11).
Radical statements start arguments, mild statements start conversations. Same applies to editorials.

You guys are great. You preach freedom and liberty and justify war to protect those concepts, but as soon as someone exercises those ideals in a way you find disagreeable the O-Club goes all Arthur Miller.
Why post his phone number? Are you really naive enough to believe people will simply give him a piece of their mind and hang up?
So he wrote some tasteless piece about Tilman. I'd just like to say a thankyou to all the lads who gave everything 1939-45 to give the guy that priviledge. Personally, I'd rather he continue to spout garbage and take it for what it is, than live in the fairy tale, neverland/police state you idiots hanker for. You're all for saluting on Remembrance and Veteran's Day, flying the flag and putting patriotic stickers in your car windows but in your fervour you forget what it was all about.

I read the article and think the kid's got alot of emotional baggage probably related to sports humiliations and bullying, nothing more.
It's been a while since I was in college, so I'm not nearly as enlightened or wise as I once was ;) , but I think Tillman represents something more to Gonzalez..something he only talks to his therapist about.
As for his stance on the war, whoopie do. My country and many others are positively packed with people who don't have much of a clue as to what's really going on "over there" and thus don't understand the absolute necessity of the whole thing. Just take a look at this bbs!
Having said the above, it was wrong to post the guy's phone number in order to incite people to call him and say who knows what. Yeah, I think it's very sickening and I'm disgusted with him, but he has his rights just like the rest of us. He simply takes them for granted.

Actually, most of the people here are just practicing the freedom of speech right back at Rene. I do not support threats of physical violence against this author, but any words, which can include anything from questions to insults, is just fine. An unpopular idea was expressed, and a reaction ensues. Nothing wrong or stupid about that.

the somewhat ironic part is that this guy has the same problem the bush-fanbois have. he can't seem to distinguish between Afghanistan and Iraq.
with Afghanistan being a necessary operation in response to attacks on our homeland, and Iraq being Bush's pet project that he used the excuse of the 'war on terror' to justify (though he didn't justify it well enough for most).

Your use of your the first Ammendment is your right as an American. I sincerely hope you realise that this right was guaranteed to you by the blood of generations of soldiers like CPL Tillman. While you sit and idly enjoy academia, CPL Tillman gave up a cushy career in the NFL to serve his country, while you, who does nothing to help this country attempt to make a mockery of his sacrifice. You should be ashamed of your view point, and beg the forgiveness of not only the Tillman's but every family that has lost a loved one in the countless wars up to today. I sincerely hope that the rest of America is able to allow your indiscretions to pass without incedent, but I highly doubt that this will happen. Hopefully you will learn a lesson that your opinion is sometimes best kept to yourself.

Part of free speech is the ability to hold idiots accountable for their idiocy. Not all opinions are equal and shouting someone down is just as much a right as what ole' Rene wrote in his editorial.

People have to be free to express themselves. Just because the guy had access to a medium that brought his opinion to millions doesnt require him to be right. In fact, he is allowed to be outright indignant, cruel and just plain wrong.
Cherrish the freedom people, and cherrish the freedom to disagree with passion. Most of all, cherrish the freedom to be correct in your own heart regardless of what anyone else says.
Protect this young man regardless of his opinion and you are protecting yourself as well.
