Title: Pearl Harbor
Post by: beet1e on May 03, 2004, 03:22:16 PM
Pearl Harbor is showing on British TV as I type this. I'm posting this thread to prove I'm not watching it! Thanks to all those who have reviewed this movie in the past for saving me a couple of hours of my time and a huge disappointment.

It really is good for a lot of laughs, eye rolling and ranting at the screen.

Pearl Harbor has one redeeming factor Beet:  you're own Kate Beckinsale.  I think she's quite the hotty.

Sidenote:  In this movie she doffs her English accent.... a darned shame.

The flying scenes are ok if you can stretch your imagination alot.  Kate is nice, too.

If you watch it just for the plane stuff it is OK, were else can you see the only real zero still flying with the REAL Sakia engine in it?

The Movie sucked but it is worth a watch for the old birds.

I liked the BoB footage up until the crash in the water... that was BS to think he'd "swim" away from that.

It's got nice scenery, planes, terrain, ships, and sets.

Ignore anyone whose mouth is moving though.  Ignore the plot.

Remind yourself that the "air combat" scenes are just pretty pictures of airplanes flying around and have little historical relevance.

Keep these in mind and it's tolerable.

I remember commenting on the BoB scenes. I said something like "we need an entire movie of just action scenes like that." I would really like to see a BoB movie with really good special effects, accurate or not.

The wonderful thing about dvd's is that you can skip whole sequences.  Like 80% of Pearl Harbor.

eh, I know, I kinda noticed that, but what can you expect? sometimes you just have to put the inaccuracy behind you and enjoy the action.

Sequel due out in 2005 according to IMDB.
Saw the special on SciFi the other night. I'd have never guessed her to be so soft spoken.
Can't wait to see Van Helsing on Friday.

You mean the recent Pearl Habour movie? If so I thought it was crap. Save yourself 2 1/2 of tape and just record the last 30 mins where all the action is.

I like movies like Master and Commander action from start to finish with no BS love story in between. Though amusing that they had to change the enemy ship to French. As histrocially the enemy ship was American.

Guess we can never have the US as the bad guys in any movie eh?  LOL

It's not WWII, and it's an anime, but Macross Plus has some great animation of some cool jet fighters flying around.  Of course they can change into giant robots, but I guess depending on the person, that can make it better or worse.  The animation is really good in this, and is worth watching just for that IMO.

I have a better idea.  Let's rewrite the ending so it IS the Americans, and have them beat the crap out of 'Lucky Jack' and his crew while singing the score from 'South Pacific'.  Yea... I like that.

If you put aside everything you know to be historically true and physically possible then the movie has alot of enteraining qualities.  And Yes, Kate is a dream.  Proof that England has created some of the most refined and attractive curves this side of the new world.

Nope...

I was told that I could listen to the radio at a reasonable volume from nine to eleven, I told bill that if Sandra is going to listen to her headphones while she's filing then I should be able to listen to the radio while I'm collating so I don't see why I should have to turn down the radio because I enjoy listening at a reasonable volume from nine to eleven.

Liz Hurley we got. The other (that aint on that list) is the chick from the Pirates of the Caribean. The "point five" is kind of offensive so I won't go there.

Will check out Rachel Weiz though.

Just shows what little you know about Doolittle. He was a left wing Roosevelt Liberal.

"If a gun bill will pass because of the politics of the situation, you must see to it that its burdens are imposed upon a man because of a criminal background and not because he is an ordinary citizen and perhaps poor."

-Gen. James H. Doolittle

Possibly true, but unfortunetly Hollywood call the shots and when was the last time you saw a movie (mainstream) where the bad guy had an american accent? Their usually british, east european, koreans, chinese, whatever. Anything but American.

Personally it dosn't bother me, mainly because I don't care much for mainstream movies and take anything from Hollywood with a pinch of salt. But it is interesting to just take a moment to note or remember how many movies you can think of where the bad guy  dosn't have a foreign accent of some kind.

Hollywood movies have a huge properganda element, always have done and always will.
