Title: Spin off of the fear thread....
Post by: Udie on May 04, 2004, 08:52:16 AM
A post in that thread got me to thinking.  Who here has had a near death experience that has ended their fear of death?  I'm not talking about the movie version of near death with the tunnel of light and stuff but just one where you almost died for some reason.

When I had that siezure they said I was 1 step from death's door.  I was out for over 10 minutes and my blood presure was higher than what normally causes a stroke or anurism, i think they said 180 over 140 or something like that I can't really remember though. Before this happened I was petrified of dying.  I would literally stay awake some nights worrying about how/when it would happen and if it would hurt and what would come after.  Since the siezure though I don't fear it any longer :)  I guess I still fear going out in a painful way but not the actual dying part.

But is it really a matter of loosing that fear or just learning to accept it.Or a combination of the two?
Speaking from my own experiance I was at first terrified at the thought of the very real possibility I would die.
Eventually that terror gave way to an accptance and actually had a calming effect.
Honestly Im not sure I fear the death part nearly as much as I do the treaments. They, in plain simple engish kick your prettythang.
But there are ways to deal with even that

yeah acceptance was the the key to losing the fear.  I got that part from the rehab I went to.  And yes it was VERY calming.

I don't fear death personally. I have obligations that I must attend to before dying though... My wife and my children need me. I fear for their sake.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

Rude, just because your post can fit on a fortune cookie doesn't make it Truth (with a capital T).

Does one have to have personally had a nearth-death experience to come to grips with death?  I can't recall a single one that I have had, but I witnessed first-hand a death that was immediate and very unexpected.  I was 5 years old when my stepfather was hit by a semi and killed.  As I grew older, I never developed a fear of dying.  I suppose it made me much more of a fatalist.  If it is going to happen, it will, and their ain't a ****load that I can do about it.  It sounds cliche, but once your number is pulled, I don't think their is much that is going to keep it from happening.  Why be afraid of it?

I always assumed that "fear" in this context was more in the manner of "awareness"...do you take it to mean fear?  As if we should be scared of God?

I know where I am going, the question is do you?  There is nothing in the bible (as far as I'm concerned) that says the other religions are wrong.  For all I know, they believe in the same God I do, just under a different calling.  But, to turn your back on God, now that is the dilema that will get you left behind...

that one always threw me.  I never fully understood the "fear of God" thing, had it explained to me many times and the best I can come up with is that it is poorly worded.

I'm a religious man but I don't fear God.  the rules are clear, whats too fear?

things that are random and pointless deserve fear.  things that are powerful but not malicious or unpredictable don't, they deserve respect, not fear.

Hit a telephone pole with the side of my Hyundai at 80 MPH, they airlifted me to Hershey and told me I should be dead. Guess that was just my lucky day. I learned two things from that incident:

1) Chest tubes hurt - period....local anestesia my prettythang

2) When the priest comes in the trauma room and asks you if you need anything, you're shrecked.

I have been close to dying more than once in the line of duty. I also have things that I want to get done but if it's my time then I don't think I have much to say about it, I'll be ready. IF it is my time.

I plan to hold on to life as long as there is a quality to it. If I am in a vegetative state I have a living will to pull the plug.

As to the spiritual aspect, ones relationship with the version of God that you are comfortable with is what is important to you. My opinion is that God has at least as many sides to HIM as there are people. I don't figure HE is limited to a one dimensional aspect. After all isn't HE God? He CAN make choices ya know. :)

While 180 over 140 is not something you'd want to cary for any time, I don't think its classified as malignant hypertension. If the bottom number gets over 165 or so, I think it starts weaking blood vessels permanently. Not splitting hairs, but people with hypertension sometimes get close to 140, and while they should get to a doctor, they shouldn't panic. Above 155 (diastolic) or so, 911 is probably a good idea.

After checking, diastolic >140 is considered malignant hypertension with other symptoms (trouble urinating, vision problems, headache etc.)

Anyway, I had a brother die from that. His pressure went up to 280 over 168. It weakened the vessels in his brain, and within a month he had a massive brain bleed.

I see death as a process for most people. After enough close people go, you really accept your own mortality and accept it as a natural part of life. You also realize, while many of life's milestones seemed terrifiying from a distance, they weren't so bad (well nothing you couldn't handle) up close. I suspect death is no different. I hope not :)
