Aces High is incredible. Hardly a day goes by where I don’t see something that truly amazes me. (And no… I’m not talking about warps, ghosts etc…) Visually, it is a treat. On 32Bit color, with hi-rez and a 19” monitor, sometimes I forget I’m really just sitting in a chair. Smoke trailing falling planes with the orange glow of a setting sun in the background, tank rounds arching through the sky, pieces falling off planes, or a fur ball of bees dancing in the distance that grows into a sky of planes… I love it all.
Of course… it isn’t just visual treat. I can hardly believe how much thought has to go into flying and fighting in AH. At first, I just flew my plane toward the enemy and pulled the trigger. You could spot me easily… I was the one blasting away at D1.8K hoping to get one lucky ping. Three months later… I am still learning something new each day. (And I haven’t flown half the planes)
It isn’t all about skills either… if so… I’d probably would have never kept flying because I was the worst of the bunch and getting shot down repeatedly wasn’t all that much fun. But then, an amazing thing happened. I circled unseen in a group of clouds between an enemy base, and one of ours that was being attacked. When I saw a P-38 pass below, I swooped down, wings squeaking, right onto his 6. Before the con couldn’t even bank, I had enough holes in it for the kill. There was only a 1-2 second window where he could have even seen me… I think it is the ‘thinking part’ that keeps me around. I like trying to hit ‘em where they least expect it. Of course… rarely does that happen, because there is always someone out there on the other side that is thinking in my shoes and mounting a challenge. It’s fun trying though.
In dogfights, I find my hand clenched so tight around my flight stick it’s sweaty. My family knows that the best time to talk to me isn’t while I am in the middle of a dogfight. I concentrate so hard the only thing I can say is ‘not now’ or ‘just a sec’ if I can get out any words at all. My cats even know to avoid me when- ‘he has that look in his eyes.’
Gooning, tanking, buffing, JABO, and straight dogfighting are so different… and each has their own required skills, pace, and rewards.
AH is far from perfect… but it is evolving and getting better with each release. Why did I bother to write this when I could be flying? (well… actually I’m not at home so I can’t fly right now) It is because I think sometimes people (including myself) get so caught up in the negative, that we lose sight of what a cool thing we have, even just the way it is.
I hereby dedicate this thread to comments about what you like most about Aces High. Everyone has to have something right… I mean… where all flying AH for some reason.

Aces High is the first online sim I've ever played. It was hard at first - I could take-off, land and fly around but dogfighting was very, very tough. Now it's just difficult (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif).
When I first started to play it (on PIII 550) I would sometimes just sit in the tower and watch the dogfights - I know its sad, but I'd even watch planes landing and taking off marvelling at the graphics. When I first saw a furball of 20+ planes I was simply amazed, and fly above it just watching the action (before diving in and getting whacked).

PS. I love fighting among the clouds. The clouds are simply awesome.

It's really hard to pick a "most favored" feature but if I had to then I would have to say it would be the clouds.

Most of the people that fly this damn simulation are WWII air combat closet cases, like me!
It is the community! Most people are of the same wave length, ya know!
Just sharing in a subject that is appriciated by all. Sure, you have your individules that bruise it sometimes, but over all the people are just great!!

Hearing the tires squeal after a successful sortie rates right up there in my list.
Also the clouds, esp when they are all pink with dawn.
I think the variety is what I appreciate most of all however. We have a good mix of planes, Ground vehicles, and soon to be a navy. Doing any one thing endlessly can get dull no matter how much fun it is. But having the option to grab a tank, a buff, a fighter, & soon a PT boat keeps it fresh.

Gotta love the variety. If Im online with only a few other people I love deacking bases and bringing in a few paratroops. If there's heaps online then furballings great too. Not many other games out there where you can have a different experience each time you boot up.

What I like most about AH is that it is ours. Not a sim from the can or out of the box or off the rack (which ever you prefer). It is a sim that we the users make of it. Salute to the HTC staff for all their hard work and their continuing efforts.
Graphics...
I to guilty of plane spotting (sitting in tower).
Prop torque (never will use the auto-takeoff)
Smoke trails and tracers (also will never turn off).
Squad logos on the side of "everyones" plane? (Only attention to such personal detail do you get such devoted users).
Sounds...
Excelent guns and damage (although await external sounds such as nearby planes <like AW3> ).
And a BIG <salute> for releasing the terrain editor. Those of you who have not yet used it..."The Matrix is looking for you and it will find you". Spending time with this tool is the only thing which has taken me from the flight arenas. Not to mention the H2H feature which makes the special terrains come to life.
The crackling sound I hear while in flight. A little less noticable from the early beta releases but still there from time to time ...haunting.

its 2 things for me... 1 is flying around in my 109 g10 and killing cons or dying by them in the most challenging way. Im always intrigued by who the con is in front of me (and mostly behind me) and how they fly their plane, regardless, if they kill me or not.
the second thing for me is the community. its always great when i say hi all that enemies will answer me. Even as enemies they are friendly, and sometimes seek me out just to kill me! Its great because its a challenge, and i always have fun. Its the community that makes it that way.

The creakin noises ya P51 makes in a 500MPH bounce, the bark of the 6 50 cals, the ghostly tracers, and the watchin them chunks o' lead crash into the nme plane and tear off their vert stab and watch them do a gracefull flutter into the ground from 10k.

Graphics are good. Fighting is intense. Relaxed atmosphere in the arenas...
Aces High must be sooo great for the new ones to online sim/games.

Silly things about it are what really put the icing on the cake for me -
The way you have to actually land properly - sideslips and flaps, bounce if you drop it in too hard.
RTB'ing with an empty buff in a wonderful sunset.
Trying to keep a fully loaded Lanc flying as you drag it off the end of the runway (no I won't use auto take off either).
Lots of different things...
And whats even better is it's run by real people you can talk to and who talk to you as a person not just an account number.
For me this is a unique ... errr.. product is not the right word ..... errr... experience.

This is the only place I can discuss the differences between planes, engines, guns and pilots and not be talking to myself :-)
I started out on AW dos way back in the day, and my how things have changed. This game above any other I've tried (AW, Fighter Ace, WB) emphasises both the technical AND tactical aspects of aerial combat. (In other words, flying the stick and pulling G will get u toasted!) I still die often and usually learn something new when I do.

I love me. Wait.. wrong thread.
Nothing to dislike. I get very few to no warps AH runs fine on my system. Best FM I've flown in 7 years of these things(relative to my experience in flying real planes in RL), skill level of most in the arena, and last but certainly not least.... 3D COCKPITS!!!!!

-The Graphics, but we need the night back
-The Community, it is full of diversity
-The 3D cockpit, makes for a higher immersion level
-The vehicles, adds some spice to the same old hum drum of an online sim

That and the interaction with REAL people got me hooked to online sims and AH is the one with the best graphics, flight modell and community i've been in so far!

Me too. You pretty much said it for me. I love the realism that is possible with these flight models and the great sounds that are available. I love reading a historical book that focuses on one of these beloved birds and then flying it in AH. Very cool sim, and a vibrant international community.

Was tailgunning in a b26 last night. We ran a mission over the front lines, but it was pretty much a milk run: one field capture, two dars disabled. As we are RTB, the pilot spots two dots low heading towards the front-line Vfield. A typhoon and C47 combo. He lines up the C47 and the typhoon comes around back.
The tiffie closes; the combination of turbulence from low-level flying, wake turbulence from the c47 and the jerking about as the pilot saddles up the C47 makes aiming pretty much impossible: I just spray in the general direction and get some hits. The tiffie returns fire -- smoke is streaming past my right: he hit the port engine. Now the typhoon is maybe 100 yards behind me. I can see the pilot's eyes. I keep hosing away. Suddenly, the whole plane is rocked by a huge explosion: we fly right through the fireball and resulting cloud of parts from the exploding C47 (this looks really cool from the tail gunner. I then see immediately following the C47 flames and wreckage, tumbling end over end towards the typhoon, the rear section of a B26's fuselage. It's a short fall earthwards.

What I love the most in this game is :
TEAM CO-OP!
Nothing feels better than having your squad mates formed up with ya and then going against enemy formations..Lots of 6 calls and hooray yells in the RW channel!
It feels so good to be part of ACTIVE and Working SQD.
Of course I like other things in this game or otherwise I wouldn`t play this but that is the best thing..

I think the greatest thing about AH is the feeling of flight. Sure, no computer game ever came close to flying for real, but AH is the closest so far. I just love having to keep straight on takeoff, struggling to get a heavy buff climbing, landings with half your parts shot off and how things just _work_ pretty much like in real life.
The sounds are great too, though a large part of that is fscotts efforts, the original sounds aren't all that great. The flight model is the best in the business, though, and that's what keeps me coming back.

I'm pretty new to this sim, but I'm hooked for good. I like everything about it, graphics and sounds are stunning. I'm using an Aura cushion, and it multiplies the effect. The immersion factor is incredible.
The best thing for me though, is the team work and strategy involved in scenario flying.

I like the ability to fly any countries plane against any others. Just like the real pilots who mock fought against their own and their allies planes, we can see how all these AC would do against each other. AH is not locked into the resrtictive and boring "allied vs axis" thing. Right now the planeset offers a lot of choice while also offering parity.

The clouds, the people and the planes. Well I also like the visual quality and the other stuff BUT MORST of all I miss the night time flying. WHY HTC DID YOU CAVE IN? I thought you guys were on the right track with that and apparently so did many of us.
