Just got mine in the mail.
In 1985 I made $267, in 1986 $1,995, in 1987 $3,093! Musta really got alot of Pizza delivery tips in 87.
What really was surprising is it tells you what you'll get projected if you retire at age 67. They should just let you invest your money on a house instead of throwing it away on something thats going to pay me $1500/month in 2038? I don't understand the program.
-
man relaying on goverment is most brave in my eyes :D
we have bad problems in social sphere here for a long time.
Coz we have less and less young people every year. I next 20 years it will be probably 1:1 or 1:2 (working : retired)
so i realy didnt get, why do we not accept more imigrants.

Google for "ponzi scheme" and then you will understand it.

Cremo, read the fine print. Check out blurb number (2) under "Your Estimated Benefits".

Lol, yeah, let Enron run it, no thank you.
What we have as government workers is FERS(federal employee retirement system). This is kind of like a 401k, but a little different. It matches you up to 5%(you can put away up to 10%) of your paycheck dollar for dollar towards retirement.(I think there is a maximum) Reagan enacted this when he did away with the old civil service retirement. I think this would be a good substitute for S.S. The government would match you dollar for dollar up to 5%, it would basically allow the public into FERS. And just like FERS, if you don't want to get involved, you don't have to. There are different ways to invest, no risk(bonds), low risk, and high risk, although, I wouldn't call it high risk, it's the "C" fund that keeps the money in the S&P index of stocks.
It would give people incentive to save.It also keeps the money from being used for other things that S.S. gets used for that it shouldn't be. It would also be protected by the government, so you would be insured up to 100k, like a bank account. After seeing the likes of enron(and others) raid pension funds, i'm not going to trust it to a private corporation, i'm sorry.

Creamo, send me about 15% of your income. I will PROMISE to give you retirement benefits, and, as an added bonus, I will send you a letter every year telling you what you MAY get upon retirement.
-
Not 73% of what I may get? Deal.
-
Well, since I can't lie, you ain't getting nuttin. But you will have all those papers saying what you will get....

Privatized my ass. Can it altogether. If I'm too dumb to save for retirement I'll be working until the day I die. If I'm worried about disability, I'll buy disability insurance. If someone else's priorities lie elsewhere, fine, but I don't want to pay for their shortsightedness.
Creamo, what did the fine print say?
-
* Your estimated benefits are based on current law. Congress made changes to the law in the past and can do so at any time. The law governing benefit amounts may change because, by 2042,the payroll taxes collected will be enough to pay only about 73 percent of scheduled benefits.
What a deal.

Yep. Can't we get rid of it now?
Yeah Creamo, that sucks. I just consider it money down the pisser - my 20-something bellybutton will never see any of it, but I'll probably pay a ****load so that politicians can dangle the SS carrot in front of my parents' generation.

But this is for the "greater good"...

rediscuss this..not enough arguments on this issue....the staement is meaningless...it will not be there when I reack social security age.
-
keeps granny from eating fido's dogfood today ...
so more of us can eat it tomorrow ....
I think the gov just needs to take MORE of our own money and tell us when and how to spend it .. yeah, that'd work ... that is the portion they don't hand out to the dumbacrat voting base in monthly loyalty payments ....
-
:D I love it!
-
The end of SSI will never happen for one reason. Every govt elected official eventually has to run for re-election. All the opponent has to do is scare the hell out of the seniors by saying "he's gonna cut social security"
DONT MESS WITH THE AARP. They might just invade your town red dawn style and set up HQ at the Golden Corral!

Wassamatta? That will be MORE than enough to get you a full meal deal at Burger King!
You'll have enough left over for a Blizzard at DQ most likely.

The last person I want running Social Security is Wall Street. How many people lost their pension and retirement with Enron alone? Yeah, let some greedy CEO steal all the money, send it offshore and skip the country. Another great Republican idea.
-
Can it and open up FERS to the public.

only the if you are ignorant enough to put your ENTIRE investment in ONE company ....
the gore/skerry voters should let the gov handle their investments as I do not see the average one smart enough to balance their checkbook - LOL

"It's like being forced to buy worldcom stock when you know they are filing for bankruptcy"
ouch :(
Now there's a scab that'll never go away... Anyone want to buy 3,000 plus sheets of toilet paper?
-
I dont pay into SS anymore. I am paid up and will get a whopping 700 bucks or so at 62 but I haven't paid into it in about 12 years.
It can be beat... If you have an equal plan, in my case, it is calPERS.... you are exempt from paying into SS ( I still have to pay medicare).
CalPers is the same cost as SS but it works like this.... you are paid 2.5% of your last highestr year for every year of employment at age 55. soo.. if you worked 20 years and retired at 55 you would have 50% of your income at 55 years old... it would be higher rate at older. It goes all the way up to like 112% or so...
Plus... it is based on inflation so it will grow 2% max a year (better than nothing).
CalPers is having a problem with having to much money tho and it is attracting the notice of democrats who feel that it is unfair and the suffering should be spread around... they (boxe finestein) have introduced bills from time to time to do things like force CalPers to "invest" in ghetto bussines and minority and low income housing. They want it to either make them look good or go down the toilet to prove that only the government can manage your money.

WTF?
Did the border patrol not already have that ability. Even after almost 30 years of following politics I never cease to be amazed at the stupidity of the government!

"Checkmate..."
Not quite since they only catch a fraction of those that cross and when they do....
http://www.washingtondispatch.com/article_9614.shtml
-
westy... it is a very thorny problem for the democrats... on the one hand they want illegals to vote for their candidate like the women do now and on the other they want their socialist programs like social security to survive.
They end up making it easier for illegals to vote (democrat sponsored bills to give drivers licences to illegals) but then whine when the iollegals who work and pay into the syustem take the crappy pitance of a check and move back to mexico where it will be enough to survive on.

lol, that wouldn't exactly shock us

Are you saying there are no facts in that? How about you refute those used as the basis of that "commentary? "
"socialist programs"
You mean "ponzi scheme." They want to sure up a ponzo scheme by feeding it more victims instead of fixing it properly.
"democrat sponsored bills to give drivers licences to illegals"
vs the Republicans giving them Creamo's money? WOW. Those Democrats got the really more evil of the schemes going! ;)

lol. The commentary is full of names, figures and pointers to pertinant "facts."
Let's try this. Why don't you point out what, in your opinion, is hogwash or lies?
-
Seems a bit of a coincidence that Social Security is abbreviated as SS - the Nazis most notorious group of soldiers that raped women and killed men. See? WWII Ex-Nazis DID find their way into our government and now we are reaping the benefits. This goes to further prove that Bush is Hitler, Cheney is Himmler, and Rumsfield is Goebbels.

i have an idea... send me all your money and i will give you some battleship blueprints....

westy... the illegals have contributed to the socialist democrat ponzi scheme call SS.. You don't think they deserve to get their money back out of it?
