Title: David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar?
Post by: Tarmac on May 07, 2004, 02:02:28 AM
Got into this argument tonight at the bar.  Friend says that Roth "is Van Halen."  I think Sammy's the man.  He went as far as to say that "nobody likes Sammy."  As I've never really discussed it before, I don't really know who "everybody" likes.

So let's hear it.  Which one is better?

IMO, DLR is a tool who embodies everything crappy about 80's music.

Sammy's just a cool guy, and an excellent front man, and has a hell of a voice.

I agree with the statement "Roth is Van Halen" to a degree (imho Eddie "is" VH).

But.... comparitively, I like Sammy better.

Oh man I'm gonna get blasted for this.

VH is everything crappy about 80's music so DLR is the natural choice.

I saw Van Halen with Sammy in 91 with Alice in Chains backing them up, it was a hell of a show. Sammy did a solo on acoustic that was good(where eagles fly). I never saw VH with DLR, so I couldn't compare the shows. But Eddie seemed to have peeked as a musician when he was with Sammy, I think OU812 is a great CD, so I would have to go with the red rocker.

Van Hagar........................ ..aint Van Halen.

Both do good at what they do, but DLR is an integral part of Van Halen.

Paid 14 bucks for VH's eruption tour. Grade 4.

When we walked into the stadium, the door guy had a chuckle yelling over to his friends at the other doors "I better check these kids for bubble gum". They had a good laugh. When we got to our seats and pulled out our joints we had a good laugh too. :)

VH was all noodling and the splits. Kind of a waste of a night.

Music wise I prefer DLR.  So many of Hagar's  songs in VH were all sappy love crap.

Why can't this be love
love walks in
When it's love

Humans Being  rocks and sammy is cool.  DLR seems like a real tool but I prefer the DLR version of the band.

Sounds snobbish but once you have seen most of the great bands of the 70s all other pail in comparison.

I hated van hagar until I saw them live in 87 at the monsters of rock tour.  Live Van Hagar kicked Van Halen's ass.  But as far as studio albums go I like Van Halen's music better.  Both good singers and Hagar plays lead too but I like the way Dave sings on the earlier stuff better.    He sounded like a guy having a fun time and it makes the music better.

Come on Dave give us a break

Hey hey hey! One break COOOOOMING UP!

Diamond Dave made VH much more entertaining than Hagar could.  There's just a huge streak of "sleeze" to DLR that made VH entertaining.

I like both versions of VH but when you get people with personalities like EVH and DLR in the same band things dont last.  Hell...when you get people like EVH in bands, bands dont last.

Again, I enjoy both incarnations but I guess the first two VH albums were the best, with the debut album "VanHalen" probably being one of the best and most influential albums of the the 70s-80s.  If I had a choice I would prefer VH with DLR (but I dont have a choice so Ill listen to whichever makes good music).

The ironic thing is that after the **** in the 90's I like DLR and SH better than EVH.  Poor Micheal Anthony.....

Okay, this discussion is simply going in circles, so lets get to another prescient musical debate.  Was George Michael really the most talented half of Wham!?  Or was Andrew Ridgeley simply never given a fair shot at solo superstardom?

Anyone who knocks themselves in the head with a stick while attempting a martial arts move onstage during a performance is laughable.  Nonetheless, Roth had the best songs, Hagar had the best attitude, and VH could continue with whatever frontman they used so long as there was chemistry with the group.  Did anybody else notice how quickly Roth disappeared when he split?  I think that's a fair indicator of where the musical talent was in that group.

And Sammy's solo career was pretty much over when they raised the speed limit to 70.

Actually, when DLR went solo, he had several hits (or close anyway, i.e. Yankee Rose), and his 1st solo album did quite well.  In his day, DLR was the man.  MUCH better front man than Hagar.  Their old stuff, Van Halen 1, Diver Down, those albums were awesome.  Much better stuff than OU812 Van Hagar.  I HATED the song Right Now.  (shudder)

I look at DLR NOW and he's an effete balding poof.  He's so durn annoying that if I were locked in a room with him for any extended pierod of time, I would have to severly beat him.

In his day, DLR was the better of the 2 front men.  He fediddlein' parachuted into a stadium for their first tour and landed on stage.

There can be only one...

1. Place "Women And Children First" in your CD player.

2. Turn the volume all the way up.

3. Enjoy!

PS - Kids, don't try this with any Van Hagar CD as your player will only spit it out onto the floor.

I admit DLR is the biggest bellybutton in the world but if bands were popular based on personality Oasis would still be a garage band.

Diver Down is DLR's best album..

5150 is sammys best....  Imo

DLR is the Van halen i grew up on..  "Jump" "hot for teacher"  etc...  they jammed..

David Lee Roth is da man..  apparently so much so he cant get along with the catalyst of VanHalen which is Eddie.
