Title: Skin Submission – Thanks Skuzzy
Post by: MachNix on May 07, 2004, 11:57:14 AM
Thanks Skuzzy for the email acknowledging that you received my first skin, the red tailed "Bridgid."  It had been about two weeks since resending the skin and I was starting to think it was also lost in the mail.

Below are three more completed skins.  I'm holding off sending any other skins until I see what happens to "Bridgid" – she's my test case for how the submission process works.

There are what, about 8 p51D skins already? Do some Corsair skins, anything but another p51D skin.

They dont do corsair skins cus its such a bad plane that why waste the time making skins for it?? LOL  The p51 is probably the most versatile plane in the game, thats why we make kick bellybutton skins for it. :aok .... And it just looks cool =)

Moot;
The lower paint scheme is from the 20th FG, 77th FS stationed in Kingscliffe.  That particular aircraft (M) was flown by Capt Frederick Larson and the aircraft was un-named.  Later it was flown by Lt. Richard A Morris where it was named "Mart's Cart."

Information and images were obtained form: http://www.littlefriends.co.uk/20thfg.jsp

Citabria;
I would like to have done one but "Lou IV" won't work on the current HT model:
(http://www.wildandfreed.com/ah/p51d/LouIV.jpg)
1.  Fuselage halves are mirrored so the call letter "C" will be backwards on the right side of the aircraft.
2.  "Lou IV" is too far back on the nose to fit completely in the nose detail area and will get mirrored.
3.  The P-51D fuselage suffers from the same "specularity settings" as the P-38 you mentioned in another thread – metal finishes only.
It talks a lot of digging to find a paint scheme that will work with HT's model, and the p51d is one of the good ones!

DREDIOCK;
Thanks for the positive comment but I can't take all the credit.  HT is doing a great job with the graphics.

Sixpence;
There is a huge amount of effort required to lean a plane's skinning capabilities – what's getting mirrored, what's hard-coded such as the secularity, what's the skin's pixel density (amount of detail the model can hold), what's the amount of stretching and distortion, etc.  Then come all those seams and panel lines to do.

The actual "painting" is the easy part and you want to enjoy it before moving to another plane.  I can appreciate you comment about there being enough P-51D skins – I'm getting tired of doing them too.

Mak333;
Yes, the p51d skin is quiet good when you compare it to other skins like the P-38 Citabria talked about in another post.

Citabria,
Over a year ago I was working on another project and came across the profile of "Little Rascal" on the web and saved the image.  While doing this project, I tried to find the web site that profile came from.  Doing a general search on the 353rd FS, 354th FG, I did find AeroMaster's decal sheet (http://www.aeromaster.com) for "Arsons Reward."  The decal sheet shows the upper invasion stripes as being olive drab.  There is a note on the decal sheet that is unclear that leads me to think there are four posibilities:

1.  The striping was as depicted in the illustration – olive drab stripes.
2.  The striping was the traditional black and white stripes at one time.
3.  The traditional stripes, both black and white, where later painted over with olive drab.
4.  All stripes where removed from the upper surface.

I chose the olive drab stripes and assumed they would have been applied to "Little Rascal" that was in the same squadron.

I never did find where the original profile came from.

Versatility is in the driver...The 51-D is a good ride for hunting other planes but not much else. Give me an F4U-1D against the P-51D then the true instincts can come shining through. Personally I would like to see the F4U-1A with the birdcage canopy removed instead of the hybrid that we have now.

Let's put the pilot aside. The F4U can do anything the P51 can do and more. The P51, for one thing, I believe uses a liquid cooled engine(not even American), making it more of a liability, where the F4U is air cooled. The F4U can take much more battle damage. The F4U can be used in CV operations, that alone makes it much more versatile. The F4U can be used anywhere for anything at anytime.
