eh?
Im waiting very patiently for a P38 skin to come around and haven't seen one.
So now I am taking drastic measures! Make one plz and a check will soon follow ;) :D

the origional p38 skin was never designed to be modified. it is so cut up and mirrored and twisted that no one wants to bother with it.
its clear htc wants skinners to give it a shot though because they removed the detail polys to make it easier to skin, but there are bigger obstacles.
the p38 texturemapping is like the old 109g6
it has fixed colors on the nose and no one can change it.
so its impossible to make nice faded olive drab panels on a nose that will always be jet black with yellow stripes.
so basically no one wants to waste their time with it because nothing truely different can be done with it.
in addition there is the large task of accurate panel lines.
this is also difficult because the textures are mirrored on top and bottom of the plane
also the specularity setting for the plane is very high to simulate metal finish, this combined with the mirrored textures makes a olive drab skin impossible.

From Pyro in the news section:
Deleted the detail faces on the P-38 to fix some skinning issues.
Detail faces = nose?

having said all that all htc needs to do to give the 38 a fair shot is make the black and yellow nose a separate texture using a planar map from the top or side whichever looks better.
this would keep the great antiglare panel lines intact yet let them be recolored so they could be blue for virginia mary skin or olive drab for richard bongs plane.
basically need the black and yellow polygons to be one texturemap perhaps where the former detail textures were.
they dont need removing because the lines add to the correct look of the plane but they do need to be texturable and it dosnt need to match the rest of the nose since its an antiglare panel and every metal 38 had them since we cant do olive drab p38 anyway.
-
yeah oct they deleted the detail faces which does help but as i said the black nose is the show stopper like it was on the 109g6
-
did you see how few 109g6 schemes were made when they had tulips?
then how you saw an explosion of 109g6 schemes after they were removed?
-
this is all very depressing news
I am not happy here

Sorry for your depression, but like Citabria said my P-38 project was halted also due to less-than-impressive results when trying on different skins.
But I've got most of the panel lines done, and I promise that as soon as the problems with the textures are solved I'll deliver you a nice hot olive-drab P-38L.

One with "teeth" ?!?!?! .... :D

Was the P38 model modified significantly? I noticed one or two things, but it still looks like the low-poly model from AHI, especially the low-poly prop cones. Does HTC ever plan on refining it? I don't think the 38 requires a rebuild, because it's already a great model, but just an increase in the number of polys would be good, to smooth some lines and make the shading look better.
