DOES IT WORK ?????

I'd give ANYTHING to get rid of a view hat.

Hows it work in AH ??

It makes zones for the headtracking device and converts it to keystrokes. Instead of pressing a hat button you just turn your head in the direction you want to look. When you turn you turn your head back to center, so does the views.

TrackIR has really hit the simming world in a big way. Most people find it intuitive and a few don't like it. It does take some time to get used to, but I guess you, nopoop, knows all about that these days. Most of us have been playing piccolo with our fingers and have a hard time to get used to moving our heads instead.

I love the irony of it. We've learned to "move our heads" with our fingers, and now when we are able to actually move our heads we find it difficult.

I love my toys. But this TIR thingy adds a little immersion and ease into simming, once I got got used to it.

To fully understand it's potential, you have to try it out with sims that fully support TIR's "enhanced mode". Such as.... well, all but every other sim (IL2 series, MSFS, LOMAC, BoB, WB, X-Plane soon...)

checkout http://www.trackir.com for details on the hardware.

They're launching the next generation hardware these days.

I HIGHLY recommend it for boys who like toys.

There is a real learning curve for TIR, but in many cases its more because of hastey setup than anything else.  If the TIR is too close (especially if you pur the reflector 'out' from your head ie: the hat brim) you will find it hard to be smooth.  Also, many new users dont use the precision button.  In AH and IL2 like sims, when you are saddling up on a bandit, you dont want your view moving too much (esp in zoom).  Maping the precision mode to your stick lets you easily ensure propper bandit fixation hehehe.

The new trackmap is a neet idea...but I havnt been able to get it perfect for my tastes yet.  One big hint....because the zones cant be adjusted independantly, and because of the nature of air combat being LOOK UP 10 times more than LOOK DOWN.  You may want to map multiple zones to the same up and side views, and save the down for only the most extreem edges of the maped area.

If I get a profile I like I'll post it.

OTOH, in AH2, even without ENHANCED MODE TIR works GREAT.  Im still hoping we can get tru enhanced mode though, it would make all the diference.

Several in my squad are using it and love it.

I have used it, set up as jodgi explained.

The problem I have with AH is that when you move your head everything blurs until you stop moving.  This makes me sick after a while.

It is awsome in IL2 though.

For those who are frugal (aka "cash strapped" such as I am) or basic do-it-yourself types this is worth checking out:

http://www.freelook.org/

It's essentially TrackIR but you use a webcam and a small circle of white paper. Or even better than a piece of paper use an old, small tv remote control (IR) unit mounted on the brim of a ballcap. Tape the volume control button down for constant output or if your inclined add an off/on switch. I plan on trying an old camcorder remote that is very small to begin with.

After I get the homegrown job running I plan on trying TrackIR software to see if it work with the setup too.

( I'll try http://www.cam2pan.com/   later )

some info:

The freelook system runs at 30fps.

TIR3pro runs at 120 fps.

rofl.    But I'd love to put it on just once, crawl into bed next to the wife and get all geeky romantic with her  .....  ;)

Freelook is definately an inferior performing system Jodgi. At least when looking at the numbers.  But I've not much choice at the moment. If Freelook works well then TrackIR is something I look forward to auqiring later.

You'll be sooo pleased with TIR Westy.

It's good to have something to look forward to.

If you can't read in the car... stay away from TrackIR... made me sicker than a dog.

I cannot think of anything (short of real G forces) that would better indicate the immersive realism than the onset of motion sickness :D

So corporal tunnel syndrome wasn't enough - lets introduce whiplash to computer use :D

No whiplash, the pile-its head barely moves. Check out these videos of someone flying some other sim that I cannot recall the name of:

Actually this idea has some merit...if they could only make it smaller.  It would solve a problem for me when making "home movies".  I'd have both hands free.

Hey jodgi, good to see you're still promoting enhanced TIR for AcesHigh. I tried TrackMapper and it seems to work well. Would you care to share your .ttk profile with us. I would like to see how you've set things up

I'll see if I can get the free one working, just to see if I like the feel. Maybe I can hook a headband up to my headphones ( to make sure I don't go to the door with white paper taped to my head).
