Hog Heaven. amen!
-
what's that, the new Oleg's aerial shooting game?.
after purchasing Il-2, seeing Oleg's attitude towards evident errors in his game's flight models (and engine models, some damage models, etc etc etc), and watching the nonsense the Il2Compare shows as the performances of FB planes, I'd rather go and play Pong. It may be less "immersive"...
but for sure will be more "realistic". As sad as it may sound.
-
First time I think I've seen a plane shadow AND water reflection. Wish I was born 50 years from now.

Nice paint job:D

Olegs team doing the graphics and HT flight engine.. sound good anyone?
680Mb download.. pfft who cares. :rofl
It would be like going back to WB times with different detail level downloads, except this time the max settings will be on crack.

wait until Arlo gets a look at this !
-
what is "Pacific Fighters"? An add-on or is it a new game?
-
It's an add on to IL-2 Forgotten Battles. Superb graphics (as you can see) in that game. The flight model is very different to AH (much harder IMO) and there is a lot more flight management (e.g. engine overheating, trim, etc). Used with Track IR, the results are utterly immersive.

-
No, i'm pretty sure it will be a stand alone.
-
I liked the way IL2 looked but I despised the play.
It felt like all the planes could barely fly.
I also think the Oleg guy is more like Borada then a reasonable person should be.
Is this done by a different team then IL2 but using the engine?
-
Gator, not actually being a pilot, I have no idea which of the flight models out there most accurately reflects the real thing. I find that in IL2 planes are more likely to go into spins and don't have as much 'oomph'
No, there was a third party group that developed one of the add on packs, but I think this one is official.
Had a quick look at the UBI soft site and it says the game is coming out this Autumn. Can't remember if it said it would be a stand alone or an add on though. Just assumed the latter.

Another pic. Got to admit, it looks pretty gorgeous.

the performances don't. I can't understand how Il2compare was released to the public, as it clearly shows the depth of the errors made in this department by Oleg&his team. There are some things that will make your mind go cracy. Like why does the A4 run 35km/h less on the deck than the Fw190A5 with just 20hp less of power. Or why does the late Fw190D9 have a global WORSE performance than the non-late Fw190D9...
and that are just some examples with the german planes. if you go into the russian stuff...well...
about the only thing I think Oleg got right in his sim (graphics apart) is the ballistics model and the Damage model concept (only the concept, its aplication is quite bugged). If AH had the ballistics model and a good version of Il-2's damage model there would be no more tails ripped with 2 pings at 700 yards and would be harder to score a kill (like it should be IMO). But other than that AH is way over Il2 or FB.
-
Revells.
Good point, and your right about it being pretty.
Still I think when Hitech has talked about how they get there flight models it seems more accurate the olegs using Russian data only.
Not that I have kept track but he seemed to base his flight models on old soviet propaganda and not real data from the planes. So all the russian stuff was way better then the german stuff..
Again I never looked into i t much but that was what I was hearing on the few threads I read about it.

Changing my pants..

bingo. And when the german stuff ,even while badly modelled because dubvious sources, kicks some ar$e in the game, they cut it off even more. For what I've heard from beta testers, the new patch they're getting ready will get the Fw190 totally gutted because the "soviet" pilots can't stand it even in it's currently porked state.
So, to old soviet propaganda, they add "gameplay" tuning. in the end what they get is a total rubbish game, which Oleg still has the guts to say its "as realistic as it can be done in a PC".
That's why I won't spend a single cent of my money on another of his productions.

Its pretty, but the "eye on a stick" view system is pure crap.

Hiya Ravs,
I think that last screenie you posted is from some upcoming arcade game which at least has "Midway" on its name...the whole name didn't stay in my mind.

This is view system is being reviewed... perhaps not in time for PF, but I heard a rumour that Oleg is looking at other possibilties

hiya Wmaker!
Could be. I got it from the PF bbs, but someone may have been posting that pic as a comparison or something.
If it's received wisdom that the flight model has been 'biased' towards soviet aircraft, then that's a real pity. To have come so far in making a flight sim and then throwing it away over something so trivial is just a damn pity.

the view is my only real compalint, I don't think we need a full 360 view, but at the minimum the ability to shift your head a bit to look around cockpit obstructions.
on one of the plains the stick obscures a few guages, with the current view you have to pull the stick all the way back to read the guage, would be nice if you could just shift your view and look around it.
-
That's one of my major complaints as well, Cap. You can't see the compass in the spit because it's obstructed by something and you can't move your 'head' up and down like in AH.

Aces High having the movable head has ruined all other flight sims that do not have it for me.
Their is no justification for not allowing it either.

Yea, they were just raving about the graphics. ;)
I've been flying FB some on our association's servers (Virtualpilots 1 and 2 in Hyperlobby). It is very nice to fly out of Kymi, our squadron's historical base, to intercept soviets over the Gulf of Finland. :) The problem has been my puter. I'm gonna upgrade it this summer so FB should run better.
The second server might still be down but it has a nice early Continuation War setup with early Tsaikas, Ratas and Migs against Brewsters, Fiats and Gladiators. Very enjoyable setup as well!
Come to check them out sometimes! :)
Btw, thanks again for Mr. Southwood's lecture. Very enjoyable and educative reading!

My pleasure!
I am taking FB slowly. There is so much to learn. I've flown using hyperlobby a couple of times with the Firebirds and it was great fun.

I'm having lots of fun in my p38 in the warclouds 44+ server (hyperlobby) the setup is against the lw and the maps include france and bastogne wich are very nice maps, the fm and views,... well u get used to it.
But than after some weeks only flying this, u get addicted.
After more hours u get more out of the plane.
I'm amazed still what the p38 can do sometimes although i was thinkin it was porked.
Another nice thing to do is there is always a mission on like destroying nme factorys.ships,tanks..etc.
The pacific add or standalone is definitly a must have.

Bug..If you have not already, I seriously recommend that you take a look at track IR (http://www.naturalpoint.com/) . Costs about $70 and has multiplied my enjoyment of the game by loads.

WOW. Gorgeous graphics.
I don't fly Il-2 though. The flight model drives me nuts.
Eagerly waiting for AH II to have some population in it, wondefull FM there....
-
If u talk to people who fly il2 and ask about aces high their reaction is the same.
for safety reasons i just wanna be good in both :)
-
as I stated b4, one compliments the other - once you get used to each
-
Il-2 FB is purty, I finally managed to get it installed but the FM is annoying as hell. Why does the plane always go out of trim just before I have a shot.

Yeah, il2 was pretty, but I hated how all american planes were pieces of **** and all russian planes were god.

Does Track IR work in AH?

Weird. What planes, and in what gameplay mode; In AI mode, or HPL, or LAN?
-
Track IR and AH:
Yes it does work but it requires a reasonably involved way to get it working. There is a thread (I think in the 'hardware' board) where the method is explained. You need to go there and do a search on Track IR and you'll find it.
[edit] I found it for you.

Will it work better in AH2 because of the mouse look?

Man the graphics are awsome!!!
The sky looks and feels like sky, open vast. The water is amazing. Very nice.
The carrier looks great too. Tower is awsome.
God I hope HTC can get close to this.
-
Hmmm lasersailor = MC_Honky.
Never had a problem with the American planes outperforming the planes they should be, but then... I actually put time into learning them. ZING!

Well, ignoring the fact that the AI can prove the magic bullet theory...
You take a plane like the P51D. It's bullet spread is all over the place, even at convergence. The spread is rediculous (And some people are pointing out that it should be half of what it is on the Il2 boards).
Now take a plane like the P40M. (Note that it was in russian service). It can outmaneuver many things it shouldn't be able to, it moves faster then it should be able to and the spread on the .50's is a little bit under what it should be.
Also take note that to down any russian plane in game you literally have to fly upside down, lean out of your cockpit and beat the other pilot with a big stick (Assuming he has his cockpit window open).
-
Well, Im on my days off, and feel sporty.
I call you full a ****.
And, Im saying I will gladly give you any of the Uber Planes. You take the P40, I'll take the Gladiator. Best of 5. You want a Russian plane that is over modelled, I'll take the 109-Z.
We will trade IP's, and get to it. I love this sim, play it 6 days out of the week, full real, engine managment, full cockpit. I'd even go no cockpit if you want. I actually love that in the p38 busting tanks because it looks like a History channel film.
I'd mostly like to fight you in a Zero verses that P40.
Months AH as a bet?

Needs sharks and perky-breasted island girls.

lol some of you sound like you have never even flown FB. SW and Creamo are right....
My money is on creamo....

You start to think something's up when a Spit 5 can easily run away from a P51 going full blast...

GtoRA2 (can't you get a simpler handle to type?)
you have mouselook in AH I think the command is F8 to make it happen. Somehow (probably because I'm so used to flying with hat view in AH) I find it easier to shoot down stuff in AH without Track IR.
One big difference between IL2 and AH is that IL2 has been built with track IR in mind, which means that you can re-centre your view by looking at the middle of the screen and pressing F12. In AH you have to re-centre your head :) .
