Title: Tillman - NFL Hall of Fame

Pat Tillman, the former NFL player killed recently in combat in Afghanistan, deserves to be honored, lauded, appreciated and deeply admired. In death, he brought to life what a true American hero is.

It is astounding that any man would walk away from a multimillion-dollar contract to risk his life and ultimately pay with it to fight terrorism. Any medals they award for bravery or courage or civic duty, he absolutely deserves.

But none of that means Tillman now should be posthumously inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The shrine in Canton, Ohio, honors men for what they accomplished in professional football (primarily in the NFL), not for good works they may have done off the field before or after their playing days.

I know, different sport, but if personal issues don't count then Pete Rose should be in the Hall. If they do count then Tillman should be in the Hall.

Personally I think they should rename the MVP trophy after him or something like that, the Hall is for playing excellence, not heroism.

It wasn’t a personal issue. He bet on baseball games, which affects baseball and is specifically prohibited in the rules.

Sorry for hijack

I'm torn. Tillman wasn't a great safety, but the NFL Hall hasn't been all that consistent about inductees.

Let me clarify then. By "personal issue" I meant actions outside of the foul lines or off the gridiron as the case may be. Halls of Fame are (or should be) for playing excellence.

If Tillman is inducted for being a great person, I think a dangerous precedent will be set. A lot of guys in the Hall were jerks, but they were all great players.

I have to agree with you on this.  Name some type of award after him and give it to a player through out the year for outstanding volutneerism or somthing.

From what I've read about him he (tillman) woulndt want all this big fuss made about him.....wich makes him that much greater of a man in my book
