.....many times end up dead.  Unfortunately, she/he took 6 others with them.  2 kids in Ohio died earlier this year doing the same thing....passing in the breakdown lane.  Stupid stupid stupid.

=======================================
Seven Dead in Maine Freeway Crash

Monday, May 10, 2004

CARMEL, Maine  — Investigators said they were making progress in identifying the seven people killed in the crash of their sport utility vehicle that sped into the breakdown lane of Interstate 95  to pass two cars.

The accident at 2:45 p.m. Sunday in the northbound lanes some 10 miles west of Bangor was one of the deadliest highway crashes in Maine history. Three of the dead were children under the age of 10.

The Ford Explorer (search) went out of control after clipping one of the cars it was trying to pass, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety (search). It then turned sideways, became airborne, slammed into some trees in the median and came to rest on its roof, he said.

Two women and a child were thrown from the SUV, while its other four occupants — believed to be two children, a woman and possibly a teenager — were inside.

All of the women were believed to be from Maine, McCausland said, "and the assumption is that so were the children."

The Explorer had out-of-state plates, but he would not specify which state. He said the vehicle had been rented in Maine by a Maine resident earlier in the day.

"We're making progress on the identifications," he said Sunday night. "We know who rented the vehicle, and the troopers are fairly confident that that person was one of the victims."

Troopers were gathering in Bangor to try to contact victims' relatives to help with the identifications and determine where the SUV was headed.

Police initially reported the death toll at five, but the number was raised to seven after a wrecker was able to lift the vehicle into a position where troopers could look inside.

A dozen state troopers were at the scene, McCausland said, and medical examiners began removing the bodies that were later transported to a local funeral home.

Firefighters equipped with chain saws cut down some of the trees in which the SUV was wedged so that it could be righted and removed.

Police had no immediate estimate as to how fast the Explorer was going, but McCausland said it was traveling at a high rate of speed.

Troopers quoted witnesses as saying one car was in the travel lane and the other was passing it in the passing lane when the Explorer came up quickly from behind.

"They told the troopers that the Explorer came up initially at a high rate of speed in the passing lane and then veered into the breakdown lane and passed both, clipping one of them," McCausland said.

Skid marks from the out-of-control SUV were visible across the roadway in both lanes, he said.

The northbound lanes were closed for hours, and traffic was backed up to Newport, at least 10 miles to the west. Troopers were able to ease the tie-up by opening a crossover to allow vehicles to turn into the southbound lanes.

The northbound lanes were reopened to traffic shortly before 10 p.m.

The crash was the deadliest on a Maine public road since seven occupants of a car were killed when it was broadsided and run over by a tractor-trailer in Richmond on Sept. 5, 1958. The state's worst crash ever occurred on a privately owned logging road on Sept. 12, 2002, when 14 migrant workers perished when their van went off a bridge in the Allagash Wilderness Waterway.

Stupid people are hurt, maimed and killed every day. It's unfortunate that they hurt, maim and kill others.

After recently taking Int95 from Jacksonville into the carolinas, the level of stupidity of the drivers was huge.

1: At about 7:00am I drove into the scene of a horrifc accident scene with several body bags and shreded metal spanning a good quarter mile, "Its foggy and dark but I have to make good time so I will do 100MPH and get home faster" WTG grandpa

2: Passing in the slow lane and then squeezing into the fast lane pushing other drivers out of the way is a habit that pisses me off because the drivers in the fast lane have to slam on thier brakes
which causes a chain reaction of brake slaming.
Who taught these people this slow lane passing trick? fricken morons..

3: Two drivers playing a game of road rage ended up being ambulance driven after playing a game of you cut me off I will cut you off and splattered the tree line in SC later that day, luckily I was several cars behind these two idiots..

Thank whomever I don't have to take that trip more than twice a year!!

I really do not understand how dumb people can be sometimes. It seems like alot of drivers have no idea what they are really behind the wheel of. There should be a special licence for v6's and up.

I think you should need a special endorsment on your licensse(like for motorcycles or heavy trucks) to use the freeway.

This is hardly news (Speeding is the number 1 cause of automobile accidents) except for the fact that there were 7, and the Explorer only holds 5 passengers, so not only were 2 (possibly more) not buckled in, but they were exceeding their max. gross weight for that vehicle.

2 years ago 2 cars involved in road rage came speeding up behind an 18 wheeler one passed on the right the other on the left they BOTH wanted that middle lane so after passing the truck both swerved in front of it hitting each other THEN bothe where run over by the truck BOth men died at the scene. The truck driver was returned to work after a 30 day investigation determined he had no chance to avoid the accident and acually saved other motorists by controlling the truck to a complete stop
which was extremely dificult with 2 cars lodged underneath.
I was the truck driver

BTW an fully loaded tractor-trailer has a max gross wheight of 80,000 lbs or 40 tons. and the ALL use brakes of a size that where developed in the 1940's when max gross wheight was around 40,000 lbs. and ABS on big trucks are a joke
all they do is keep the safty lobbyists of the DOT's back. Air brakes will still lock-up and skidding in a big truck is bad very very very bad

did there insurance at least compensate you for 30 days lost work?  most people I know couldn't make it 30 days without income and still have a place to live.

One of the first things my dad taught me about highway driving was to always give semis the right away, and never ever cut them off as they cannot stop.

DOT regulation say i had to have a drug test then an investigation into a fatality accident. Thats the law some guys dont ever get to go back to work had a buddy driving in cali a guy " intentionally" rammed him head on. They found a suicide note and my buddy was still charge with involuntary manslaughter but it took 2 1/2 years before he could drive again They got some of the stupidist laws of any state regarding trucks

I've driven across germany recently, and having driver in US well over 90,000 comparison is rather interesting.

No speed limit in germany, but roads feel much safer. you always know what to expect of people. Passing on the right is forbidden ( you lose your licence on the spot if I'm not mistaken ) and people generaly keep to the right unless passing ( this goes for cars doing 150 mph as well !!! )

In US people pass whereever they feel like, drive slow in left lane and there is a speed limit ( none in parts of germany ).

Aparently death rate per 100,000 travelers is something like 2x higher in US then it is in germany, so maybe speed itself is not a problem ?

yeah, try death rate per mile travelled though.

....that being said, from my experiences driving in Europe (including a few autobahn hauls and putting it in reverse in the left lane of the B. Peripherique), there are a lot less cupholders in European cars.

part of the problem is the cars themselves..  they "feel" safe at speeds of 100 or more.  they isolate their drivers from the real world and the loudest thing is the cell phone pressed to your ear.  If a person can steer with his/her knees at 100 mph in the first rain of the season while talking on the cell phone and turning around to yell at the kids then they will.

about 1 in 100 people that drive 100 mph can stop or evade at that speed safely.

Exactly, I love it when people try to compare driving in Germany to the U.S.  Just take a look at volume, and number of roads, then throw in population compression. ;)

Seriously, there was an hour long program on the Discovery channel about this particular subject, the false sense of security we live in with airbags, selt belts, and high speeds we drive.  It certainly attributes to the reckless risks people take.

Maybe we should go back to a "Horse and Buggy" styly automobile, where you ride in FRONT of the bumper.  That way, there would be fewer rear end collisions, and fewer bad drivers on the road. :D

When I lived in Idaho, there was a gent that stopped behind 3 cars waiting at a railroad crossing.  He grew impatient and sped around them right in front of the train.  He, his wife and his 2 kids were killed.  That pretty much sums up my definition of "idiot".

As for Germany... I don't know many people that have gone there and not seen a fatal accident on the Autoban.  I don't mean driven by the wreckage, I mean actually saw the accident.  You just can't have a lane where people are doing 100 next to a lane where people are doing 40 and expect that to be safe.

Speeding isn't necessarily dangerous... it's speeding when others aren't that gets people killed.

British courts say women are the 'better' drivers

2 hours, 21 minutes ago  Add Top Stories - AFP to My Yahoo!

LONDON (AFP) - Women, much-maligned by the opposite sex for their supposed lack of ability behind the wheel, make far safer and more law-abiding drivers than their male counterparts, British officials said.

AFP/File Photo

Of those found guilty of all driving offences by courts in England and Wales in 2002, 88 percent were male motorists, according to statistics published by the Home Office.

Men committed almost all the most serious offences, such as causing death and dangerous driving, but women's share of speeding offences rose from 13 percent in 1998 to 17 percent in 2002.

The category in which women committed the highest number of offences was obstruction, waiting and parking -- being responsible for 23 percent of such cases in 2002.

Women committed just six percent of the death or bodily harm offences in 2002 and just three percent of dangerous driving offences.

But female offences relating to driving with excess alcohol or drugs in the system increased -- up from nine percent of the total in 1998 to 11 percent in 2002.

Men were responsible for 96 percent of vehicle thefts and 97 percent of offences relating to motorcyles.

Overall, women's share of motoring offences rose only one percent between 1998 and 2002.

My mother has been pulled over for speeding probably 30 times.  She's gotten 2 tickets... one by photo radar.  My aunt was pulled over for driving the wrong way down a one way street in the middle of the day... the cop enjoyed her story so much he let her off.

Eventually you'll see a migration from the "isn't that cute" aproach to bad women drivers... but till then, we'll just sit back and look at stats.... and the fact that men make up a large majority of the traffic.

Its hard to argue that the faster you go, the less reaction time you have, and the more distance that is required to stop. But I will agree that slow traffic and fast traffic combined can be more lethal than all traffic traveling at a high rate of speed.

I don't cut people off, I study the situation ahead of the line of cars and if I see a large opening - hell yeah I'm going to get into the slow lane and pass those jerk asses. I won't cut anyone off, nor will I get back into the passing lane until I need to pass someone in the right lane. I drive in the Washington DC metro area, and good road manners plus knowing the rules of the road is like kryptonite to these people... so f'em.

The fact you drive in DC metro area you win on points!

It's not really symmetrical.  The left-lane-banditry causes people to pass on the right, not the other way around.
Blaming the passers is like blocking a doorway to a building and complaining that people are brushing up against you.

Kamikaze 18 wheelers...don't ya just hate em?!

So there I was, returning from a trip to Alaska.   Myself, wife, two sons aged seven and eight, and an elderly lady friend tooling along at 75 mph on an interstate in Oklahoma.

Check rear-view mirror prior to passing slow-traffic in right-hand lane.  Left lane is clear...semi quarter of a mile back...pull into left lane to pass slow traffic consisting of about four vehicles.  Half way through this procedure glance in rear-view mirron.  Semi is now 5 FEET off my rear bumper.  Hurriedly complete passing maneuver.  Pull back into right-hand lane...sob shakes his fist at me as he goes by...disappears from sight at what MUST be 90 mph.

License plate was unreadable of course.
