Post by: lada on May 12, 2004, 02:04:36 PM
.. will be pretty soon.

I were just trying to recall some rules regarding OG.

If i remember correctly, country in War were not allowed to enter for a long time.

So if we will check American way of thinking, all other states should boycot games

What is you opinion about: "countries at War should not be allowed to join OG"  like it were many years ago ?

I don't want the US team to go anywhere near Greece.  Why should they die like the Israelis in 1972 ?

In ancient times wars were stopped to accomodate the Games. The USOC has never disallowed the participation of a member who was "at war". The games were canceled in 1916, 1940 and 1944 due to some minor conflicts   .

Very true.  I think the fears of the 72 Munich games repeat  should be quelled, after all, the German Gov't totally botched that incident, both with record-low security and trying to appease to the terrorists.  All nations changed their attitudes toward security and how they deal with terrorists after the Munich debacle.

Post by: rpm on May 13, 2004, 08:00:36 AM
The Munich incident was by and large a sneak attack. Nobody was expecting a terrorist attack at the worlds largest peacefull gathering. I think we are no longer "Babes in Toyland".

I have a friend that lives in Athens and I passed on an opportunity to go to the games. I just have a bad feeling.

Yeah, that is one sweet chair.  Check out the rim/tire combo.  That's some high-end equipment.  That lady ain't messing around.  I've seen some wheelchair racers with similar setups (though in a tricycle configuration).

I'm going to the games.  Am I worried.  Not very.  The new greek government has brought in security experts from Israel, the USA, and NATO is also in a support role.  The greek government is spending over 1 Billion dollars on security.

Having said that, I put in for opening ceremonies and didn't get them, and that's ok.  If anything were to happen, that would probably be the event.  I do have tickets to Men's Track and Field finals and Women's Gymnastics finals.  I will only have to walk 5 minutes up the street to catch the Marathon runners.

I'm psyched!

She may not be completely para.  If you look at the little middle wheel contraption, it seems she changes direction partly by using that wheel, probably with her quads.  I'd imagine it'd be a hell of a struggle.

My favorite all time former Olympic sport.......

Live Pigeon Shooting.

Held only during the 1900 Paris Games.
Leon de Lunden of Begium killed 21 birds to edge out Maurice Faure of France by one dead pigeon to win the gold.

WTG Leon!

If they would switch to Canadian Geese they could hold the match right up my street.

BTW,  while I can't prove it on short notice, I'm pretty sure the United States has won more Olympic Gold Metals in Small Bore Pistol shooting than in any other sport.  Of course you'll never see that on network TV.

There are 3 pistol events in the modern Olympics:

Rapid Fire
Free Pistol
Air Pistol (since 1984 I think)

No such thing as small bore pistol. There is a small bore rifle competition though.

Well....this happen in Chechnya a few days ago.

Quote
GROZNY, Chechnya (CNN) -- Chechen President Akhmad Kadyrov and at least five others died in an explosion at a stadium in the Chechen capital, officials said. A spokesman for the Chechen Interior Ministry said that the bomb may have been buried in concrete as many as three months ago while the stadium was undergoing a renovation.

Not possible in Greece?

I don't want to labor a small point but I'm guessing the Rapid Fire and Free Pistol are .22 cal.   AKA 'small bore'.

More important, what's our record in the above.

I looks like the USA is competitive in all shooting events but does not dominate in any.  'My bad..."  :o

I just hope NBC covers the Olympics better.  They have been looking for controversy rather than sport for so long they have lost sight of what is sport.  Do you know that some think that Kobe's trial is sport related rather than a legal issue?  They have friggin sportscasters talking about  testimony instead of the ERA of some left hander for the Astros.

In Seoul, NBC covered a Korean boxer who believed he got hosed in a decision so he sat in the ring for an hour or 2, and NBC covered all of it.  a commentor said something like, "He now has the Olympic record for a protest..."  great an Olympic record for doing nothing and I am getting pissed watching him do nothing and sports casters talking about him doing nothing.  All the while I knew the event I was intrested in was holding finals.

Idiots.

Now half of NBC's coverage will be about security.  Even if  nothing bad happens, Osama wins a little by causing that.

Given certain other, ehm... issues... I'd say that's not much of a stretch at all.

The worst thing about NBC Olympic coverage is that it takes a trained eye to notice that there are actually other countries participating.

The only sports related issue is whether he will miss a game due to the legal proceedings.  All else is legal, not sports.

They could make the Olympics much better with a little pruning of the list of sports before adding any.

Sports I'd like to abolish:

Synchronized Swimming
Synchronized Diving
Rythymic  Gymnastics
Team Gymnastics
Synchronized Swimming
Butterfly stroke in swimming
Badminton
Rythymic  Gymnastics
Softball (let 'um play real baseball)

Oh yeah, and Synchronized Swimming and Rythymic  Gymnastics.

You can win a medal in

Free Pistol

You can win a medal in

Rapid fire Pistol

You can win a medal in

Air Pistol

You can win a medal in

Small Bore Rifle

But you can't win a medal in Small Bore Pistol, no matter what "bore" you use... cause there ain't no such event.

You can't win a medal in long ski shushing either, even though they wear long skis,  but you can win the Downhill.
