Nice....yellow journalism at it's worst....if the UK government is telling the truth...
.K.: Daily Mirror Photos Not From Iraq
By ED JOHNSON, Associated Press Writer
LONDON - Photographs allegedly showing British troops threatening and urinating on a hooded Iraqi prisoner were "categorically not taken in Iraq (news - web sites)," the British government said Thursday.
Armed Forces Minister Adam Ingram said the truck seen in the photos published by the Daily Mirror newspaper "was never in Iraq."
He said details of the evidence would not be disclosed while the investigation continues.
"We had to treat these photos at face value. That value has changed," Ingram told the House of Commons. "These pictures were categorically not taken in Iraq."
The Daily Mirror, which published the pictures on May 1, had said it was given the pictures by soldiers from the Queen's Lancashire Regiment who were concerned at the conduct of "rogue elements" in the army.
The newspaper quoted the unidentified soldiers as saying the unarmed captive had been threatened with execution during eight hours of abuse and was left bleeding and vomiting. They said the captive was then driven away and dumped from the back of a moving vehicle, and that it was not known whether he survived.
The claims followed the publication in the United States of graphic images of prisoner abuse at Baghdad's Abu Ghraib prison — images that have provoked international condemnation and threatened to undermine the coalition's efforts to rebuild Iraq.
The Mirror photos were among images plastered this week on desecrated gravestones at a Commonwealth cemetery in Gaza, by Palestinian vandals angered by the prisoner abuse.
Prime Minister Tony Blair (news - web sites) insisted Wednesday that there was no evidence of "systematic abuse" carried out by British troops.
Blair has come under pressure to explain why he and senior ministers only became aware of a damning Red Cross report only a few days ago. The report, issued in February, detailed allegations of abuse.
The leaked report says abuse of Iraqi prisoners by American soldiers at Baghdad's Abu Ghraib jail was widespread and routine and included brutality, humiliation and threats of "imminent execution."
It also alleged British mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners in southern Iraq, including hooding, but nothing as severe as the accusations against the U.S. forces.

Anything for a buck!
Maybe TheDudeVariant would like to chime in here and post how truthful and free the press should be...:rofl
-
Are they truly fake, or was it just proven they weren't from Iraq?
-
All I know is what was quoted in that article.
But even if they are real, but not from Iraq, reporting something as inflammatory as this to intentionally mislead the public is disgusting.
-
Was the victim fat? He may have been held in Saudi Arabia.
-
Just saw on the news that the Boston Globe may have done the same thing.
-
Sure, it all never happened. There is no Abu Ghraid and Scumsfeld is a fine secretary and a man of integrity.
tune in next week for another episode of 'GOP-fairytales'!
-
MuckMAW - The Mirror is a crappy little tabloid which supports Labour.

What do faked photos of BRITISH abuse have to do with US Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld and the ongoing US investigation of US abuse - an investigation that started months before any photos of amy abuse were released?

I do not know much about your party system, Beetle.
All I know is whatever credibility the Mirror had, it's got to be gone now.

The photos were originally questioned and labelled fakes because they had many discrepencies. Eventually they brought in a special crimes unit to inspect the photos and confirmed they were faked.
The rifle in the photo, an SA80 L85 rifle was the A1 version and not the A2 version issued to all service personnel. It didn't carry the obligatory fixed sling.
Trousers were tucked into the boots, which allows sand to enter the boot; not the done thing. Other little things like soldiers not wearing watches highlighted questions.
Urine marks on the prisoner seem to have been doctored digitally to give the impression of being pi$$ed on.
The prisoner was supposed to have been beaten for many hours but his clothes were clean, and no obvious bruises. Friends who have served there inform me that people get dirty within 5 minutes, guess they realised this too. Images of the prisoner being beaten showed prisoner is state of relaxation rather than tensing up his muscles etc.
A troop wagon in some photos did belong to the Regiment accused but was never taken overseas and definitely not in Iraq. It had remained in the UK the whole time.
Finally other equipment, fittings, level of sun etc. highlighted other inconsistancies.

I just find this kind of forensic investigations fascinating.

While the Mirror is certainly left-of-centre, it hasn't supported Labour's Iraq policy at all. It's rather silly that they've resorted to making stuff up in order to criticize Blair, given that there are umpteen aspects of his Iraq policy that can be shot down without fabricating a single thing.

Doesnt make sense bout the troop wagon. How could some folks planning to docter some photos have access to this regiments military vehicle?? And if it stayed in country, the pictures were taking in England?? Just a question.. Have only read whats here..
dude
-
All I was saying in my post was that I saw on the news this morning that the boston globe printed posted or reffered to pictures that were actually sent to them not from Iraq but from a porn site. I havnt seen a link or anything that's just what I heard.
And before Mr. Gunther Sholtz says ANYTHING.....I HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS.
-
Thedude, it's easy to gain access to a military vehicle. I'm sure bribing a soldier to stage pics in his barracks isn't that hard.

The type of vehicle is easily available in the UK and all you'd need is false number plates. One rumour is that a Territorial Army (like National Guard) guy had access to the vehicle. As mentioned before, they're still investigating...

I just find this kind of forensic investigations fascinating.
What I written was what highlighted the fake possibilities. It wasn't until after analysis of the photos by forensics that they truly discovered that they were fake - what exactly they found hasn't been disclosed yet.
-
I'll personally wait for the evidence to be released before I decide, but one thing struck me as odd straight away: compare the quality and resolution of the pictures with those taken by the US army: whovever took them had access to a pretty good camera and had some skill with it.

Lol, you suck!
I'm just reiterating a post months ago saying how the middle east wages war against us by funding al-qeada and supplying bodies. So now that they have targets right across their border they are going to stop? You've got to be kidding. They don't have to spend millions getting them the America, they just send them across the border. They commit the crimes, say they are al-qeada, and they are doing the same thing the post mentioned, and you were all in agreement with it. I mention it now and it's a big conspiracy? So that post that said middle eastern countries help al-qeada no longer has any relevance? I'm just going by that, if they were doing it then, they are doing it now.
-
I think you'll find that the photos were staged by some soldiers of the Queen's Lancashire Regiment themselves to make an easy buck from the Mirror. The truck, according to the BBC news was identified in the barracks of the regiment and may be shown to the media soon.
I was dubious about them too when I saw them first and I'm no expert. Any so called journalist or photographer worth his pay should have spotted it immediately.
The Mirror is a rag and has been viciously against the war from the start. It has spewed nasty inaccurate left wing propaganda for the last year or so. The Daily Mirror is media bias at it's worst and is enough to turn me into a right winger
 Finally it's going to get it's come uppance. The editor won't survive this scandal, hopefully.
I expect he'll take the squaddies who staged the thing down with him too. Their career in the British army is definitely over. Plus, they've endangered their colleagues in Iraq. The irony is that there was probably some mistreatment of prisoners by the British in Iraq but all of that has been lost in the fuss over the faked photos. Morons!
On a lighter note it is surprisingly easy to fool newspapers, particularly tabloids. A friend of mine told a tabloid he had given golf lessons to Fidel Castro while on a visit to Cuba. The paper even paid him for the story and took pictures of my friend heavily disguised:lol :lol :rofl . There's one born every minute:aok

skernsk,..first of all, its none of your business. If Grun had a problem with my request, I am pretty sure he knows my email address and would have used it. It was between Grun and myself.
Second of all, if you have to resort to name calling to defend yourself, then leave the board. You, nor any other person, is welcome here that feels that is the only way to defend yourself.
It's not tolerated in the game and won't be tolerated on the board.
Third, by the time you posted, Grun had cleaned up the posts, so you did not see the originals. Seems he did just fine after removing the name calling form his posts.
Now, clean up that post skernsk. No call for the name calling.
By the way Grun, thank you.
Ravells,..LOL! Brilliant! Simply brilliant!
