Title: What the @#%$##* is the deal with the word "ADVANTAGE"?
Post by: Kweassa on May 13, 2004, 09:05:56 PM
Everytime somebody writes down the word

 "advantage"

it seems to automatically insert a certain link into the post which was never intended. I see this happening to me, to other people, and even other UBB boards such as the UBI IL2/FB forums.

What the $%^&(@W#E$ is going on??

Note:

See the "adv...." word linked in the above post??

 I've never made that link.

It'd probably be to your advantage to review this link idea before posting more about it.

It's spyware, certain words create links. I cant remember the program name but I had the same thing. Check your start menu first, you'll probably recognize it.

Here's a link to download ad-aware 6.0... It's free and gets rid of that spyware.

Yup, spyware, I've had that one too.  Irritating as hell, ain't it.  As I recall, it was pretty tame and could be removed by simply uninstalling from the add/remove programs control panel in Windoze.  Not sure what it was called, but it was something fairly obvious.

Thank you so much for the infos.

I was caught completely unaware, and didn't know such a weasely infiltrating program existed!!! I honestly don't have a clue where the heck it crawled into my system!

 .....

But how does this "adaware" work? Is it some sort of a filtering system??

Just scans for spyware.  Then at end of scan gives you list of files it found that you can delete.

That Ad Aware stuff's pretty neat - got my system under control.

Gee whiz I've never realized so many stinking "data miners" were embedded in my system - how the hell do they get in here in the first place?

Anyhow, thanks for the quick tips. Whew...!

Anytime you visit a site and when it tells you that you must install their plugin to view or download and you say yes, you likely just installed a ****load of spyware. Most of the time when you download and install "free" software from the Internet, it is accompanied by spyware.

One Christmas several years ago I had friends and family over for dinner. The kids gravitated to the computer. My brother came to me and asked to talk with me in private. Everytime someone opened IE it opened to a porn site! I had been having some probems up to that point but couldn't figure them out. YES INDEED it was spyware. Some of it had even reconfigured my bios! I installed one of the free spyware elimainating programs and was rather surprised at the amount of junk deposited on my computer. Now I use it regularly. I also have my system configured to ask me before accepting cookies. This too has helped. Try one of the mentioned programs and you'lll wonder how you lived without them. The US legislature has been considering a bill making spyware illegal. Maybe we should make the internet illegal (j/k kinda)
Peace

Actually, depending on how you have security set in Internet Explorer, there are sites that can quietly download spyware on your computer, without your knowledge.
The default security setting Internet Explorer uses leaves your computer wide open for little programs to plant files and read data from your computer.

After you install adaware make sure you update it to the latest signature.  They update this program almost daily.

I use Spy Bot, found it after I went to a site looking for a decent shotgun somewhere in Orange county, like at a pawnshop, this guy had fixed up a site that seemed to advertise such, but when I visited his site it downloaded TONS of spyware, CoolWebSearch and assorted crapola onto my PC. Unbelieveable! I now run Spy bot at least once a week, it does a good job of identifying and removing such nuisances.

Spybot is another great free program.  I use both because spybot will find stuff that adaware will miss.  But spybot isn't updated as often.
While we're on the subject, might as well mention zone alarm.  Anyone who dosen't use a firewall is asking for trouble.

Skuzzy,

It doesn't matter what security settings the IE users have when the program has ~20 open remote exploits at any given time.

People need to just quit using it and switch to something else. Firefox is a good replacement.

JB,

Firewall will do you zero good if you are using IE because of the forementioned remote exploits. This whole firewall thing is blown way out of proportions. You can prevent them from phoneing home or something similar, that is they don't disable your firewall after escalating their priviliages to superuser...

I think you have what is called a "CoolWebSearch" type redirector in there.

Do some investigating, you will find a remover for it. CWS is tough to get rid of because it hides and reinstalls itself after you disable it. It must be hunted down and extinguished completely from your machine. I feel your pain, it took me about a week of work to finally get rid of mine.

There it is again..

it automatically linked the any word containing the characters "intel" and "book".

Does anyone else see that link? Is it only me seeing it? I've tried both Spybot and Ad Aware, caught a ton of things I didn't notice and banned them from my system.. but still this one doesn't seem to just go away.

Could it be the UBB is somehow doing this? Anybody know specifically what I must do to stop this from happening?

Thanks..

This frickin things slows my web browser down - everytime a new page is loaded it seems to scan certain word/letters, and create advertisement links to posts that contain them.

I'm kinda stumped right now just what exactly this thing is - trouble with identifying it, so I can't even search my system for what I'm looking for.

The split-second pauses this search-create link process is doing is driving me crazy...

We're not the source of your spyware.  You didn't get it from us.

Also be careful about what anti-spyware you install.  Stay with the reputable ones.  Others are just more spyware.

Sorry Pyro, didn't mean it in that way. At first I thought some kind of banner/advertisement thing took control over the boards or something.

As it is, this thing may not be serious, but it's incredibly annoying.

I use Adaware, Spybot, and this SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com)
Helps keep the stuff off.
Also, try jv16 Power Tools (http://www.jv16.org)
You can use jv16 to get rid of reg entries that pertains to spyware, adaware etc..

Have fun  :D

You need to run BOTH ad-aware and spybot at least once a week. I have a Autistic child who loves Transformers toys. He searches the net for hours looking at Transformer items. I run both programs on his system about three times a week and find at least 3 registry changes and dozens of spyware everytime.

Spybot
http://www.safer-networking.org

Ad-aware
http://www.lavasoft.de/

And remember to update the program monthly.

The best redirect-ware programs are the ones that hang up your modem then redial out to a carribean island that's hosting porn sites. Now you're paying international long distance call rates.

If you let a teenage kid use your computer you're liable to find your phone bill has  $1000 in international phone calls. Most phone companies will give you a partial credit, one time. They can't let it go because they are on the hook to the international carrier for the fee themselves.

They even have a way to zap Cable/DSL users. It asks you to enter your phone number, then bills the phone number for the minutes even though you are on cable/dsl!
