Title: National Gas Boycot day
Post by: Gunslinger on May 18, 2004, 10:14:52 AM
I honestly dont think this works but I've heard that tomorrow May 19th there is a national boycot on gass.  Suposedly it sends a message to the oil companys that we are tired of paying outragous prices.

I myself think this is dumb because everyone will be filling up today and the day after so what's the point?

Do not forget that they will also go out and buy an SUV that gets 10mpg or less this weekend, and then whine about gas prices.

Personally, I intend on filling up my tank tomorrow for two reasons.

1.)  Chain letters are ****ing stupid.

2.)  What better way to voice my thanks to the petrolium powers that be that Im satisfied with the lowest gas prices in the world.

No chain letter it was in the paper here and on the radio this morning.  I barely read anything in my inbox that has FWD: in the subject line.

Hmm... well if it was in the newspaper, Im just going to have to fill up all my cars and the lawn mower too.

Newspapers are chain letters you PAY for!

Nope it wont do anything,

Now if we all stop buying from say Texaco for a month then add in say Shell for a month then include Chevron for a month, think of that.

Texaco would not have sold any fuel for 90 days and would, I think be about the cheapest with Shell running in a close 2nd.

And BP would be think about there profits real hard.

If you look at the Oil companys profits they are soaring just about now, I really don't think the raw materials (OIL) has as much to do with the prices as they want you to think.

Yep we start (all of us in the country need to be in on this) with one big oil co. first and stop buying there fuel.

What say you?

LOL, Scootter!  I remember that big "grass roots boycott" movement.  It was right about this time what, 2 years ago maybe?  It came to me in an email but it never made prime-time news.  Not even an Op/Ed piece.

Yea but radio is free?????  and dont say I have to buy the radio becuase you can make a radio out of a cue tip some copper wire a fingernail and duct tape;)

Like I said this is dumb because everyone is just gonna fill up the day befor and the day after thus helping the oil companys make up for lost profits.

Radio is not free, you have to listen to 30 min of comercials for every 10min of programming.

I got an e-mail/chain-letter on that one too (maybe around Christmas).  it actually makes more sense than any of the other boycott schemes I've heard,  it could work if you really could get enough people working together on it (no small trick there).

anyway, I dug it out of the 'deleted' folder so here it is-

Read on....Subject: GAS WAR!

Join the resistance!!!!

I hear we are going to hit close to $300 a gallon by the summer. Want
gasoline prices to come down? We need to take some intelligent, united
action. Phillip Hollsworth, offered this good idea: This makes MUCH MORE
SENSE than the "don't buy gas on a certain day" campaign that was going
around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because
they knew we wouldn't continue to "hurt" ourselves by refusing to buy gas.
It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them.
BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really
work.

Please read it and join with us!

By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about $1.50 is super
cheap. Me too! It is currently $1.97 for regular unleaded in my town.
Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to
think that the cost! of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50- $1.75, we need to take
aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace....not
sellers. With the price of gasoline going up more each day, we consumers
need to take action.  The only way we are going to see the price of gas
come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their gas!
And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. How? Since we all rely on our
cars, we can't just stop buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on gas
prices if we all act together to force a price war.

Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline
from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If they
are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they
reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to
have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas
buyers.   It's really simple to do!!  Now, don't whimp out on me at this point..keep
reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

I am sending this note to about thirty people. If each of you send it to
at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300) ... and those 300 send it to at least ten
more (300 x 10 = 3,000)...and so on, by the time the message reaches the
sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION
consumers! If those three million get excited and ! pass this on to ten
friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes
one level further, you guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!

Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all. (If you
don't understand how we can reach 300 million and all you have to do is
send this to 10 people... Well, let's face it, you just aren't a mathematician.
But I am ... so trust me on this one.)

How long would all that take?  If each of us sends this e-mail out to ten
more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably
be contacted within the next 8 days!!!  I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that

much potential, did you!  Acting together we can make a difference.

If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. PLEASE HOLD OUT
UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $1.30 RANGE AND KEEP THEM DOWN. THIS
CAN REALLY WORK

Ya, I got the chain letter from a friend as well. Unfortunatly fuel cost would be a 'fixed cost' for all of us and unless we all start riding bikes or driving solor powered cars the same amount of fuel will be used in the end no matter when or who is boycotted...

One day boycotts are useless. If people are really concerned, then boycott the old fashioned way, and be prepared to make life difficult for yourself in the process.

Me...I filled up on Monday, so I guess I'm already boycotting gassing up on Wednesday.:D

I haven't read the entire thread, so somebody may have already snapped to this, so forgive me if I'm being redundant, but the same sort of thing happened during the 70's gas "shortages" when prices started escalating. Was stupid then, and still stupid, IMO.

Don't be silly. It's not the people in SUVs that whine about gas prices. They can afford the car they can afford the gas to go with it.

It's the people in cheap cars that are sensitive to high gas prices. Why do you think they've bought a cheap and less comfortable car but with a high mileage to begin with?

Do you know what the #1 complaint of SUV owners? High gas prices. Yes that is right, they are so dumb they buy the SUV, and then complain about the high cost to fill it up. You can still fill up a cheap ole corrolla or civiv for under 15 bucks, and you only have to do it once a week. Trust me economy car owners do not care that much.

btw not all small cars are uncomfortable anymore.

Consumer Reports. Go read them yourself.  Hey lada, tell me this. If your in the oil industry and your refinerys are running at 92 percent, and you are banking, why would you build more? So you have more refinerys? That equals higher capital costs, and it increases the supply of gasoline in the market, which will drive down the price.

you don't need petroleum to make plastic.  like the fuel situation its just the cheapest method.  as the price of oil goes up other options become more reasonable.

it's not like we would have never industrialized without oil.  it was just cheap, plentiful, and easy to get too, so other alternatives couldn't compete.

IIRC, the first diesel engines where designed to run on hemp seed oil, and plastic can be made from it too, it's not like we are without alternatives.
