I saw a bio program on him last year.  It talked about the one character he played where he dressed up as a lounge act and acted like an ass.  After a while, he had a friend dress up in the costume and his friend did the performances and no one knew it wasn't Kaufman.  I think his friend even went on Letterman.

I remember thinking, "What if Kaufman isn't really dead?".
