Something I've noticed, even in AH1 is that when sitting on the runway and a plane comes up in the same position, you can read the instruments of the other plane. Usually you're not in that position for long, so I can't tell if they are functional or not. As in reading RPM's, etc.
My question is....
Apparently the entire plane is loaded in AH1 when it is nearby. If this is also true in AH2, why not just load the shape and plane textures leaving the instruments out of the equation?
Wouldn't that greatly reduce the load on the video cards?

The amount of detail you see is a factor of distance. When you are very close, i.e., sitting in the cockpit, you get all the cockpit details. Since the other plane was the same distance from your viewpoint as your plane was in that situation, you saw the same amount of detail. Since you don't normally occupy space in other people's planes, it's not really something that has any effect on things.

pyro how many level of detail models does ah2 use for each plane?
