Title: Router choices?
Post by: Frodo on May 22, 2004, 11:38:47 AM
Looks like my router is shot. Any wireless models that are any good?

Don't need any thing fancy. Only have one other machine to run.

All the major manufacturers, USR, MS , ASUS, Cisco etc. etc. etc. effectively field similar products. The only thing you have to check is the protocol (802.11g instead of 802.11b) and the price. You can check a speed test but I found that the data transfer differences only existed significantly under test conditions and in practice were negligible. I'm not particularly fond of Ad-hoc connections (since you only got 2 stations) because they tend to have inferior transfer and are less appreciated by the average home OS (XP), does save you a few dozen bucks though.

Note: Some do excel in the quality of the accompanying manual though, it might be a wise thing to ask the salesman which he finds the most comprehensive and/or accessible manual...

Without DSL modem my pick would go to the DLink DI 624 rev C2 or greater (http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=6).
With DSL modem i'll go for the Netgear DG834G (http://www.netgear.com/products/prod_details.php?prodID=223&view=).

They are both B and G compliant.
