Title: WWII Movie Buffs!
Post by: Hawklore on May 23, 2004, 09:57:29 PM
This is your time to shine!

I am looking for WWII movies, set in Russia, France, and just Europe in general.

I'd love it if it involved, partisans, French Resistance, Maqui, etc.

I'll list some of the movies I have seen already.

Band of Brothers

Saving Private Ryan

Pearl Harbor

A Bridge too Far

(I can't remember the name exactly but it was about a boy in Russia who steals, and his mom colaborates with a German Officer)

Enemy at the Gates

Thats all I can think of off the top of my head, and I'd love to see more, let me know ones you think are historical, and ones that are fiction..

Thanks,
Hawklore

PS: If you got DVD's, VHS's of WWII stuff you want to get rid of give me an e-mail at Hawklore88@yahoo.com

PPS: Oh and I've seen Patton...

Another good one based on actual events is the movie "Is Paris Burning?".  I've seen the movie and read the book.  The movie doesn't stray far from the book.

Lotta great WWII movies out there for sure.
But there is one that Sticks out in my mind as being not only a good movie but one of the best and most accurate pre Prvt Ryan movies out there. Called  "Battleground"
An old old movie for sure and you wont see all the Gore of a BOB or Prvt Ryan.
But it does capture the flavor

Just watched Das Boot on the Big Screen the other day.

Although it's a little too long IMO, I think it's the most accurate and realistic portrayal in a WW2 Movie.

The Dambusters isn't a documentary.  It's basically a WW2 drama/action about the development of the bouncing bomb by Barnes Wallis.  617 Sqn is formed flying Lancasters and learn to fly at low level but they don't know why and what for.  They're then sent on a low-level mission to three (or four?) dam targets in Germany.

I love it because it's nice to see the development, the problems they were facing and then finally the end target.  Amazing how they did it, not only dropping the bomb but navigating their way there.

*Zvezda: the best war movie made here in last 15 years:

http://imdb.com/title/tt0326450/

*"Come and see": the best and most... horrible... I don't know the right word... Can't watch it without a bottle or two of strong alcohol...

http://imdb.com/title/tt0091251/

*"Torpedo-bombers": another great film that is tooo strong to watch it sober. The last scene ("And now we will punish them... Punish!) is incredible.

http://imdb.com/title/tt0262052/

"Test on the road": a great film about partizans. I don't know - but it is one of the films that pretend to show things in a way very different from "official" partizan image.

http://imdb.com/title/tt0067625/

*"Only old boys go to battle" ("V boy idut odni stariki"): probably the best film about Soviet WWII airmen. There is a monument to "Maestro" (regiment commander played by Leonid Bykov) in Kiev, on a high bank of Dniepr...

http://imdb.com/title/tt0070861/

"A la guerre com a la guerre" ("Na voyne kak na voyne"): a film about Soviet tankers (in fact - self-propelled artillery, "tank killers"). The combat scene when the Su-85 jumps upon a Panther and the crew counts seconds until they will be burned is really strong one...

http://imdb.com/title/tt0063333/

*"Hronika pikiruyuschego bombardirovschika" ("Dive-bomber chronicle"): a great film about Pe-2 crew. Features real Pe-2.

http://imdb.com/title/tt0175809/

War-time classics: "Nebo Moskvy" ("Moscow skies"), great footage of real planes. IMDB is wrong, the film was made in 1942.

http://imdb.com/title/tt0037122/

"Stalingradskaya bitva" ("The battle of Stalingrad"), 1949-50: a good movie showing official Soviet point of view at that time. Stalin is a wise a tired man, and he makes good advises to Vasilevsky and other marshalls. The only film I can remember where you can see real German tanks in staged scenes.

http://imdb.com/title/tt0041916/

"Dva boytsa" ("Two warriors"), 1943 : a story about two friends who fight in sieged Leningrad. Great actors, great music.

http://imdb.com/title/tt0036782/

And the all-time classics of war movies:

"Osvobozhdenie" ("Liberation"): Yuri Ozerov's masterpiece. First episode is the battle of Kursk ("Curve of fire"), and the last is Berlin operation. You should also see other war movies made by Yuri Ozerov.

http://imdb.com/title/tt0151852/

"Blokada" ("Siege"): a stroy of sieged Leningrad, and the things behind it.

http://imdb.com/title/tt0144111/

Just several titles that came into my mind...

I marked films I have in DivX with "*". Unfortunately the only one with English soundtrack is "Come and see" :(

Boroda wow, thanks for that list!

I'll be sure and pass that list along to the 197th Rifle Guards, the unit I'm gonna be portraying a partisan with.

Boroda, If it has subtitles thats ok with me, my favorite movie is, "The Seven Samuri" and it's B&W and subtitled..
