Hmm, the average age of the soldiers we have in afghanistan now is 26 and the guy that got killed by taliban was 29. The next contingent to replace the current have average age of 22! They are sending "kids" now.

I think sending women in uniform to that part of the world ( and Iraq as well ) might not be a best idea. It prabably offends lots of people stupid sensibilities and equates to pouring gas onto fire...
But she is kinda cute :D

I read your post, Mr. Toad, and guess what? Just today, I saw that very phrase in the now redundant Church of St. Peter & St. Paul, built in the 1100s in Marlborough, Wiltshire. (I have my mother staying with me, and we were on a day outing - hence the Church visit) The quotation was set in the stones behind where the altar would have been. But where does that quote come from? First time I'd ever seen it, but I recognised it immediately having read your post.

AIF Private Richie Murray (one of 2428 Australian and British POW's murdered by the Japanese at Sandakan) earn't a similar epitaph:
He stepped forward to sacrifice his life for his mates. Lest we forget.
Murray stepped forward and took the rap for the theft of a bag of biscuits that 4 pows had stolen and then disbributed to 26 other starving surviving prisoners. After the Japanese had lined all 30 up and threatened to shoot them all for this capital crime, Murray stepped forward and said he alone was responsible. The japanese nearly beat him to death on the spot, then dragged him into the jungle and finished him off with a bayonet.

We've been lucky that we have only lost one of our diggers in afghanistan. I truly hope that will be your countries only one.
