Say it ain't so!
They're sucking the soul out of their donuts!
I'll have to stop for a fresh dozen regular glazed in the morning. Its too late in the evening for all that sugar now.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc. is prepared to adapt to the low-carb dieting phenomenon it blames for a drop in sales of their sugary snacks, the company's top executive said Wednesday.
"The way we're looking at it is we're going to assume that it is" here to stay, Scott Livengood, chief executive officer of the doughnut-maker, said at the company's annual meeting. "And we make our plans and do things in a, call it a worst case scenario. I think there is always a real possibility that people are going to decide a balanced lifestyle is appropriate for them and the dynamics will change again.
"But on the other hands we're not going to take anything for granted."
Krispy Kreme reported Tuesday that it lost $24.4 million in the first quarter, its first quarterly loss since going public in 2000. The company's stock has fallen by about a third in the past month.
The company will continue expanding overseas, operate more efficiently and introduce new products to attract customers who aren't going low-carb, Krispy Kreme executives told the about 220 shareholders who came to the meeting. Most seemed sympathetic to the challenges facing the company.
Grocery stores will start selling bags of Krispy Kreme coffee to brew at home and the company's doughnut shops will start selling a low-sugar doughnut and frozen drinks this year.
Overseas expansion will focus on Asia with the first new stores in South Korea.
In afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange, Krispy Kreme shares were down 7 cents at $19.81.

Could it be that there donuts just aren't that great? I went to one that was built out here... it wasn't bad (the worst donuts are still good)... but they aren't great either.
And... I don't know if I thought about low carbs much, but having a viewing window where you could see each donut traveling undre a waterfall of icing isn't something that leads me to believe they're really interested in weight loss (regardless of the carb issue).

What type of donut did you try there? If you tried anything other then the glazed donut, then yes, it was a standard donut.
But their sugar glazed one... mmmmmm...

KK's are great when they are warm. Ask them for a dozen of whatever is fresh out of the oven... good eats.
-
I've always thought KK were overrated.

Our shop has an unwritten rule.....If you are late for work due to oversleeping you must stop on the way and get doughnuts...not just regular but crispy cream.
That's all you need to do to smooth things over is bring the crispy creams
this whole low carb diet thing pisses me off. My sister in law offended me by making me make PLAIN ribs for her. No rub No sauce. Just regular ribs w/ salt n pepper.

Agreed, they suck hardcore. Last time I had some they were stiff and hard. Shipley's are great whether they are warm or cold. KK just suck period.

You must've gotten ahold of 2-day-old donuts if they were hard.
A Krispy Kreme donut goes through 4 distinct stages:
(a) Fresh. This is evidenced by warm dough and flaky sugar coating. This lasts about an hour. These donuts can only be achieved at the shop.
(b) Almost Fresh. Dough is cool to the touch but the sugar still flakes. The donut will stay in this condition for about 12 hours. Examples are usually at the shop or at one of the better grocery stores.
(c) Not So Fresh. Dough is cool to the touch, sugar is in a state of "sweat" where its more of a liquid that's soaked into the dough. This is a "later-in-the-day donut", about 16-24 hours after manufacture, but still edible. These are your convenience store donuts.
(d) No Longer Fresh. A "next-day-or-so donut". Dough is cool to the touch, sugar has completely seeped into the dough. The donut is hard but can be revived by a short stint in the microwave, but you won't have the sugar coating. These are sold at convenience stores that don't care about customer satisfaction.
I hope this helps resolve the confusion over quality by explaining why some of us Kreme in our jeans when the "Hot" sign is in the window, and why some of us can't understand the addiction because we get ours in a box at the convenience store.

I remember as a kid growing up in Birmingham, once a month or so, our dad would load us kids in th station wagon (this was in the middle 60s, in a Bellaire wagon) and take us to th only Krispy Kreme in town (and the only donut shop worth going to). What a shame to mess with such an icon of American cuisine.
